The gates stand open like a verdict. Music falters, then dies as the Empress enters the courtyard, every servant and guard freezing under her gaze.

Magistrate Wei stays bowed low. The Imperial Guard Captain watches from the perimeter, hand on his blade, while the arranged feast and swept stone suddenly look fragile.

Kareem Bishop steps forward with the estate around him, the polished tables, aligned servants, and quiet order all visible at once. This is the test, whether the house he built can speak for him.

The Empress stops at the center of the courtyard. Her silence presses harder than shouting, measuring the space, the people, and the man who claims it.

Magistrate Wei

Magistrate Wei

Your Majesty, this is the residence under ward duty. Every measure here has been kept in lawful order.

The Empress

The Empress

Then let it be seen. Show me who maintains this place, and what kind of authority he keeps.

Wei’s glance flicks to Kareem again, urgent and precise. The estate is no longer just a home, it is his proof, and the Empress is waiting to decide if it holds.

"Your Majesty," i bow, "I am Kareem Bishop. New to your beautiful land. This is my home. I do the renovations on my downtime. It began as just me, but thanks to this wonderful community, I have more people trying to help than i have things for them to do. This little BBQ Splash is my way of saying thank you to my neighbors. And your royal majestiness gracing is as made it better.

Your Majesty, I am Kareem Bishop. New to your land. This is my home, and I maintain it myself. What you see here is meant as thanks to the people who helped make it real.

He lowers into a formal bow, then straightens with measured care. The feast remains still behind him, tables aligned, servants silent, every line of the courtyard holding.

Kareem Bishop

Kareem Bishop

The work began with me alone, but now others choose to lend a hand. I have more willing helpers than tasks for them, which I take as a good sign.

The Empress

The Empress

A house that draws labor without compulsion is not common. Look at him, and at what he has gathered.

Her gaze travels over the banners, the polished stone, the disciplined servants, and the feast set without waste. The Imperial Guard Captain remains rigid at the edge, but his hand eases a fraction from the blade.

Kareem Bishop

Kareem Bishop

This gathering is a simple meal, Your Majesty, given in gratitude to my neighbors. No more than that.

The Empress

The Empress

Then gratitude here has been made into order. That has its own weight.

She gives a small, controlled nod, not warmth, but recognition. The courtyard seems to inhale together, as if the house itself has just been named lawful in her presence.

"W-would you like the formal tour?" I stutter

W-would you like the formal tour?

Kareem keeps his posture steady even as the words catch. The courtyard stays hushed, lantern light resting on the water bowls and clean stone.

The Empress

The Empress

A tour, then. Show me what you chose to make visible.

She turns her attention from the whole yard to Kareem alone, as if granting him the shape of the next step. Magistrate Wei lowers his chin in quiet approval.

Magistrate Wei

Your Majesty honors the household by accepting his guidance.

The Imperial Guard Captain shifts aside, blade still sheathed, creating a narrow path through the disciplined feast toward the main walk.

The Empress

The Empress

He asks properly. So far, nothing here is pretending to be more than it is.

I guide the Empress through the courtyard. "I hope i haven't overstepped by building this. I have been studying the laws and codes your majesty. But it is not my first language and it is soo boring. Wh-what I am saying is if my little oasis caught your eye in a negative manner I will correct it." I pause, "your royal highness majesty empress ma'am "

Kareem Bishop

Kareem Bishop

And... your royal highness, majesty, empress, ma'am.

Kareem keeps his hand open toward the path and then lets it fall, as if offering the whole courtyard to judgment. The brass tally at his belt gives a faint, answering pulse, quiet as a held breath.

The Empress

The Empress

You speak like a man who expects a law to bite him. That is not the speech of a fraud.

The Empress

The Empress

Your correction is noted. Your language is clumsy, but your labor is not.

She steps into the path Kareem chose, looking first at the drains, then the stone joins, then the bowls of water set where the light can find them. Magistrate Wei watches her face more than the courtyard.

The Empress

The Empress

Show me the part you were most afraid I would question.

"Hand me the noose to hang myself" I give an awkward smile. "That would be this," I open the restroom. It has a shower and sink both with hot and cold water taps. My fear is because it might be to advanced for this society. "Hot water. Cold water. And waste management. Flush and it goes away. Away from the house and the people. All the water that enters my house does so fresh and clean. All water that leaves goes through filter after filter to be cycled again. Clean each time."

Hand me the noose to hang myself. That would be this.

Kareem gives an awkward smile and opens the small wash room off the courtyard. Inside, a basin, a shower stone, and paired taps sit in clean order, waiting like a private promise.

Kareem Bishop

Kareem Bishop

Hot water. Cold water. Waste goes away, out of the house, out of sight. Fresh water comes in clean, and the old water goes through filters until it is clean again.

The Empress steps closer instead of recoiling. Her gaze follows the pipes and drains, then returns to Kareem with a sharper, more thoughtful stillness.

The Empress

The Empress

You hide a city’s discipline inside a private room.

The Empress

The Empress

Most men show me gates and walls. You show me what a household does with filth.

Magistrate Wei’s shoulders loosen a fraction. The brass tally at Kareem’s belt gives a faint pulse, as if even the device recognizes the shape of the argument.

The Empress

The Empress

The design is bold. The care is stranger. Tell me who taught you to think this way.

"I believe that disposing of the filth properly will save more lives than any wall or military. If every household had this set up mortality rate would drop by 50%. Reducing deaths from cholera, typhoid, and dysentery by 98%-100%. I learned it from being a homeless orphan on the streets that wanted clean water

I learned it where clean water is scarce, where filth kills faster than swords. A proper drain, a proper wash room, it stops sickness before it starts.

Kareem keeps his voice even, not pleading, just laying facts on the courtyard stones. The Empress listens without blinking, her attention narrowing from the pipes to the people those pipes might spare.

Kareem Bishop

Kareem Bishop

A wall can keep trouble out. This keeps death from spreading inside.

The Empress

The Empress

You speak of this as if it is warfare.

Kareem Bishop

Kareem Bishop

It is. Only quieter.

Magistrate Wei draws a slow breath, the tension in his face giving way to wary admiration. The brass tally at Kareem's belt gives another soft pulse, as if marking the Empress's reconsideration.

The Empress

The Empress

Then you have built a weapon against the empire's oldest enemy. Show me the rest of what you have made, and tell me what you would build if no one forbade you.

Learn what Kareem would build if no one forbade him

"If no one forbade me and if I had the budget I would start with this setup in every home. Water based infrastructure. I would get rid of public baths. All fountain water would go through a filtration system. Although I would discourage people from drinking out of public fountains. And encourage them to drink their clean water from home with travel mugs." I lead her upstairs to my study and show my sketch books and blueprints

Kareem leads the Empress up the stairs, past neat railings and bright plaster, into the quiet study above the courtyard. The room is lined with sketches, measurements, and folded drafts, each one pinned or weighted as if the walls themselves are under review.

Kareem Bishop

Kareem Bishop

If no one forbade me, and if I had the budget, I would start with this in every home. Water in, waste out, filtration where it matters, no more relying on public baths to keep a district from getting sick.

Kareem Bishop

Kareem Bishop

I would keep fountain water moving through a filter, and I would not trust it for drinking. People should carry clean water from home, in travel mugs, so they are not forced to gamble with the streets.

The Empress studies the blueprints in silence. Her gaze moves from drainage lines to water basins, from roof gutters to storage jars, as if she is reading a military map drawn in ink and patience.

The Empress

The Empress

You are not describing comfort. You are describing a city that refuses to lose itself to rot.

Magistrate Wei stops at the threshold, letting the room belong to the papers and the two of them. The brass tally at Kareem's belt gives a faint pulse, then settles, while the ward-marked paper remains visible beneath the corner of a sketch.

The Empress

The Empress

These designs have discipline. They also presume labor, order, and the will to keep paying attention after the feast is over.

The Empress

The Empress

Show me which of these you would build first, and tell me what you would change if imperial custom stood in the way.

I ask which custom would block this most

SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Kareem Bishop

Kareem Bishop

Which custom gets in the way first, if I try to build this in a house that follows the old rules?

The Empress

The Empress

Water is never merely water in Shou Lung. Wells, cisterns, baths, and drainage all answer to rank, temple oversight, and district privilege. A design that changes the flow changes who is allowed to be clean.

The Empress

The Empress

So your first obstacle is not craft. It is permission. A noble house may improve itself, but a common block must wait on officials, and the officials must be fed with proof.

The Empress

The Empress

If you asked where custom would resist most, I would say the private toilet. Lords dislike anything that makes their waste visible to law, even indirectly.

Magistrate Wei

Magistrate Wei

He asked the right question. Now she is telling him where the empire will bend and where it will bite.

The Empress

The Empress

Yet I would not forbid it. I would require it to be described as sanitation, not novelty, and tied to duty, not comfort.

The Empress

The Empress

Show me a version fit for a magistrate first, then one a merchant can copy. If your work can move downward through the ranks, it has the shape of a reform.

"I would actually start at the bottom and work up. Installing filtration systems in the fountains in the poorest districts first. My reasoning is that is where the sickness is most prevalent. Stopping it there would increase the health of everyone all the way to you, your majesty. And the fact that it might make some nobles upset would not be my purpose even if I might enjoy it

I would start at the bottom and work upward. Put filtration in the poorest districts first, where sickness hits hardest. Clean water there helps everyone, even up to you, Your Majesty. And if some nobles dislike that, that is not the point.

The Empress

The Empress

That is a reformer's answer, not a builder's vanity. You name the weak point first, then make it the strength of the whole chain.

Magistrate Wei

Magistrate Wei

He has done it. He has turned charity into statecraft before her eyes.

The Empress steps to the table, not away from it. Her sleeve brushes the blueprints as she studies the fountain lines and the marked drains, then she gives a single, deliberate nod.

The Empress

The Empress

A magistrate's district first, then a merchant ward, then wider still. If it works in the poor quarter, it can be taught, taxed, and defended.

Wei lowers his chin in silent relief. The brass tally at Kareem's belt gives one faint pulse, as if the estate itself has been acknowledged by a higher hand.

The Empress

The Empress

Show me the next layer, Kareem Bishop. What else would you build if custom did not stand in front of your hands?
