The pavilion settles into a deeper quiet. Beyond the latticework, evening light rests across the garden stones. Between Kareem Bishop and Empress Xifeng, the covenant board holds its dimmed gold-script like a covered ember.

After a long pause, the weight on Kareem Bishop’s shoulders grows heavier. He looks toward Xifeng and asks if he may reveal who he lost.

Empress Xifeng

Empress Xifeng

You may. I will hear the name, and I will not place it in any record unless you ask me to.

Empress Xifeng

Empress Xifeng

You do not need to make the loss orderly for me. You do not need to defend what that person meant, or explain why the absence still follows you.

The gold-script dims further, withdrawing from the space between them. No scribe appears. No seal changes. The silence becomes private by permission, not by force.

Take the time you need, Kareem Bishop. I am here, and I am listening.

"Her name was Soleil." I look down at my hands and close my eyes, "she was my daughter. My only family, the reason to breath, the definition of strength, happiness, and love." I open my eyes but don't meet the Empress's eyes, "She died in my arms on the eve of her first birthday. Just before we could cross the threshold into our new home. Our first home." My eyes begin to fill with tears i struggle to hold back, "she was born 4 months prematurely. Weighing 1 pound 1 ounce. Was in the hospital for 6 months. I never left her side. Lost my job. My apartment. When she got out of the hospital she had to stay with a friend while I slept in my car, kinda like a carriage, and saved money to get us a home. I finally did. It was small. It was in rough shape. It was in a bad neighborhood. But it was ours." I pause, "the night I took her home was the day before her birthday. As I inserted the key a stray round hit my shoulder. A second went through me and into her. She died 20 minutes before 12 pm

Her name was Soleil. She was my daughter, my only family.

The words leave Kareem Bishop softly. His hands lower into view, fingers tightening together as he looks down and closes his eyes.

She was my reason to breathe. My strength, my happiness, my love.

Kareem Bishop

She was born four months early and spent six months in the hospital. I never left her side. I lost my work and my apartment, then slept in my car while saving for a home.

When Soleil finally came home, the house was small, worn, and in a rough neighborhood. Kareem Bishop had made it theirs. The key was in the lock on the night before her birthday when a stray round struck him and then struck her.

She died in my arms, twenty minutes before midnight. We never crossed that threshold together.

Across the table, Empress Xifeng does not reach for a seal, a record, or a solution. She lowers her gaze, receiving the name as something entrusted rather than evidence.

Soleil will remain here as you gave her to me, Kareem Bishop. Not as a case, not as a lesson, and never as a burden you must make smaller.

If you wish, tell me about the home you made for her. I will remember it with you.

"A one bedroom on the ground floor. Everything had cherry blossoms or unicorns. Soleil loved unicorns. I had all the decorations for her party. Balloons, streamers, a cake with her name misspelled," i chuckle through the tears, "i had a soft unicorn toy plushy that was bigger than she was. I installed extra locks. Child proofed everything. And on the wall was a collage of all the stages she fought through in the hospital." I pull our a folded picture of me and my daughter on the day we left the hospital

A one-bedroom home on the ground floor. Cherry blossoms and unicorns everywhere. Soleil loved unicorns.

Kareem Bishop describes the balloons, streamers, and cake with her name misspelled. A soft unicorn plush had been larger than Soleil herself. He chuckles through tears, then unfolds a worn photograph.

I installed extra locks and childproofed everything. On the wall, I put a collage of every stage she fought through in the hospital.

The photograph shows Kareem Bishop and Soleil on the day they left the hospital. Her small hand rests in his, and both stand beneath open daylight, carrying the fragile shape of a beginning.

You built safety around her before she ever had to ask for it. And you made room for joy inside it.

May I hold the picture for a moment, Kareem Bishop? I will return it exactly as you gave it to me.

I nod and with a shaky hand, give it to her. Then I wipe my eyes and apologize, "I am sorry your highness. A thousand people have a sad story like mine. I shouldn't burden you with this"

I nod and, with a shaky hand, give it to her. I wipe my eyes. I am sorry, Your Highness. A thousand people have a sad story like mine. I shouldn't burden you with this.

Empress Xifeng accepts the photograph with both hands. Kareem Bishop steadies his breathing, though his fingers still tremble against his knees.

Empress Xifeng

Empress Xifeng

You have not burdened me. You trusted me with a life that mattered to you.

Empress Xifeng

And no, Kareem Bishop, a thousand sad stories do not become lesser because they are shared by many. Each one still had a name. Each one still had a hand reaching for it.

She studies the photograph without touching its surface, then returns it exactly as promised. The covenant board remains silent, its gold script unable to turn Soleil's memory into an imperial record.

"Unicorns and cherry blossoms," Kareem Bishop says. "That was the home I made for Soleil. When I returned after her funeral, police tape crossed the door."

He keeps the photograph against his chest and forces himself onward. The front door opened onto a home transformed into a blood-filled ruin, every bright promise of the nursery swallowed by what waited inside.

"There was blood everywhere. I had built that place for her, and I could not bring her into it. I only found what was left after she was gone."

The memory costs him his composure. His voice breaks, and his tightening fingers crease one corner of the photograph before he carefully smooths it flat.

"I see it," Xifeng says softly. "Not as a report, and not as a lesson for the court. I see the home, the colors, the child it was meant to welcome, and the grief that entered instead."

Empress Xifeng

"You have shared it with me, Kareem Bishop. Soleil had a home waiting for her, and now I will remember that home with you."
