Steam still rises from the dumpling baskets when a young adult man in a singed Featherington coat bursts through the door, soot streaking his face and sleeves. He crosses to Don Featherington and drops to one knee.

Featherington runner
Godfeather, the Bishop estate was firebombed. Part of the grounds is burning, and survivors are seeking help.
The room falls silent. Lady Satsuki grips the exposed account leaf, while Lord Garan rises heavily from his seat. Don’s cigar slips from his fingers and dies against the table.

Don Featherington
Who did it, kid? Tell me you got more than smoke and bad news.

Featherington runner
We found this in the ruins. Scorched, but readable. It bears an imperial water-contract seal.
He places the blackened fragment before Don. Its warped seal glints faintly in the lamplight, linking the attack to the reform network and possibly to the Quiet Measure’s exposed contract.

Lady Satsuki
Kareem’s people may still be trapped or wounded. We must decide whether to send aid, preserve the evidence, or confront the office before it strikes again.

Secure Kareem’s estate and aid its survivors

Expose the Quiet Measure’s attack network
“I jump up and take off running towards my estate. When I get there I bust in the door calling out to anyone trapped”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +0)

Kareem surges from the table and runs for the Bishop estate. He cuts through startled streets as smoke smears the evening sky, leaving the delegation behind.
The estate gates stand open, one hinge twisted by the blast. Kareem reaches the main door, drives his shoulder into it, and forces it inward with a splintering crack.

Kareem Bishop
Anyone trapped inside, call out! I’m here! Respond if you can hear me!
Smoke rolls through the entry hall, hot enough to sting his eyes. A fallen beam blocks part of the corridor, and the impact has torn skin across Kareem’s shoulder.

a trapped survivor
Here! In the west room! Please, there are two of us! The door is jammed!
Their voices are clear through the smoke. Behind Kareem, Don Featherington and the others arrive at the gate, while flames climb the outer garden wall.

Don Featherington
We heard them, pal! Get those people out, and I’ll bring every hand I can find to beat this fire back!
“I kick open the door and swoop up the child putting a rag on her face. I lead the two out as a beam crashes behind me”
FAILURE (Good Strength, rolled +0)

Kareem kicks the west-room door inward. Smoke pours through the gap as he swoops up the child, a small human girl with freckled cheeks, tangled dark hair, and a soot-streaked green dress, who presses a rag over her face, while the second survivor crawls after him.
The damaged frame gives way behind them. A burning beam crashes across the corridor, sealing the direct route back and forcing Kareem toward a narrow service passage beside the room.

a trapped survivor
The service passage leads to the courtyard! It is tight, but the old pantry door should open into the garden!
Kareem carries the child through the choking passage as the survivor follows close behind. Heat presses through the walls, and falling plaster makes the main hall impossible to reach.
the child
There is a little door behind the shelves. I saw it when they hid us.
The child points through the haze toward a low pantry entrance half-hidden by overturned shelves. Beyond its warped slats, cooler air carries the scent of wet earth and open garden.

Don Featherington
That way, pal! Find the little door, and I’ll get hands around the courtyard side to catch you!
“I kick open the door and swoop up the child putting a rag on her face. I lead the two out as a beam crashes behind me”
FAILURE (Great Agility, rolled -1)

Kareem shoves the overturned shelves aside and carries the child through the low pantry entrance. The second survivor squeezes after him as smoke thickens behind them.
The warped pantry door refuses to open fully. A ceiling beam crashes across the passage behind them, sealing the route back and trapping all three in the cramped room.

a trapped survivor
The door is swollen shut! There must be another way. The old drainage channel runs beneath the pantry floor.
The child points beneath a torn mat. An iron ring emerges from the boards, surrounded by damp earth. Cool air breathes through its narrow seams.
the child
That hatch leads to the garden water channel. I heard it under the floor when the fountains ran.

Don Featherington
I can hear you, pal! Break that hatch, and we’ll catch you where the channel opens. The courtyard crew is ready!
The estate’s direct exit is lost, but the hidden drainage channel offers a usable route beneath the fire. The survivors press close as smoke curls under the door.
“I beak the hatch, " go go go”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +1)

Kareem Bishop
Go, go, go!
Kareem tears up the mat, grips the iron ring, and wrenches the hatch open. The boards crack loudly, and a sharp splinter cuts across his palm.
Cool air surges from the drainage channel below. Dark water rushes beneath the opening, carrying the scent of wet stone and garden soil through the smoke.

a trapped survivor
It is open! Give me the child first. I will follow close behind.
The child clings to Kareem as he lowers her into the channel. Her shoes splash into the shallow current, while smoke presses down through the broken pantry door.

Don Featherington
That’s it, pal! Keep moving toward the courtyard outlet. I’ve got hands waiting there, and nobody gets left in the smoke!
The survivor descends after the child. Above them, fire groans through the estate, but the opened channel gives all three a clear route beneath the burning rooms.
“As we crawl out and make it to the street the fury in my eyes burn hotter than my home”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

The channel carries Kareem, the child, and the survivor beneath the estate. Mud streaks their clothes as cool water guides them toward a widening grate beneath the street.
Kareem shoulders through the grate and emerges into the evening air. He lifts the child onto the pavement, then helps the survivor climb out beside her.

Don Featherington
There you are, pal! Bring them clear. The fire brigade has the garden, and my people are counting every survivor.
The child coughs against the clean air while Featherington’s attendants wrap both survivors in blankets. Across the street, smoke boils above Kareem’s burning home.

Lady Satsuki
Your household is alive, Kareem Bishop. My witnesses will preserve that fact, and my family will help protect whoever escaped.
Kareem stands soaked and soot-streaked before the ruined estate. Fury burns hotter in his eyes than the flames consuming the walls, while the scorched imperial seal waits in Don’s ledger.

Lord Garan
This was not intimidation. It was an attack on consent itself. The Quiet Measure has declared its hand, and the estates will answer together.
“I draw my katana "They wanna fuck around? Well now they gonna find out"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)
Kareem draws his katana in one clean motion. Firelight runs along the blade as smoke coils over the ruined estate and the scorched imperial seal.

Kareem Bishop
They wanna fuck around? Well now they gonna find out.
The blade’s ring cuts through the street’s confusion. Don Featherington’s attendants stop counting survivors long enough to face Kareem, while distant bells summon more witnesses.

Don Featherington
That is a declaration, pal. We make sure it lands on the people who ordered this, not on every fool they hired.

Lady Satsuki
Then let consequence begin with evidence. My witnesses will secure the survivors and preserve the seal before anyone can rewrite its meaning.

Lord Garan
My riders will close the estate roads, peacefully and publicly. No suspect leaves under cover of this fire, and no household is punished for refusing the Quiet Measure.
Behind them, the fire brigade advances through the garden while the delegation forms a guarded circle around the rescued pair. The investigation now has a living witness, a burned contract seal, and a unified response.
“"Moaren has no idea what he unleashed" i move to the civic office”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)
