Morning light catches on the open ward office door, and the market beyond presses in with noise and spice. The Gate Scribe waits by the threshold with a stern scholar and her scroll case, both of them staring at Kareem's bag like it has already spoken.

The Gate Scribe

The Gate Scribe

We found the reference. Not coin, not mere bullion. This mark belongs to an old imperial issue, a tribute alloy recorded in temple annals.

The Scholar

The Scholar

Foreign hands do not usually carry this mint. Yet the resonance is exact. I need the source, and I need it honestly.

Kareem Bishop

Kareem Bishop

I didn't make it. I found it with the bag.

The scholar unfurls a brittle rubbing from the scroll case and lays it beside a bright coin. The stamped figure matches the old record, a throne seal half-worn smooth by age and travel.

The Gate Scribe

The Gate Scribe

Then the ledger grows deeper. This gold is tied to a vanished treasury, one the empire still counts as missing. Your arrival is not the only unusual thing about your path.

When did this treasury vanish?

Kareem extends the coin across the desk. The scholar takes it first, pinching it between ink-stained fingers while the scribe’s brush stills over the fresh note.

The Scholar

The Scholar

This issue is old, temple-certified, and recorded as missing during the last imperial audit. The treasury did not vanish all at once. It was emptied in stages, then buried in paperwork and silence.

The Gate Scribe

The Gate Scribe

And the ledger here names the route. River vouchers, ward tallies, sealed transit, all lawful on paper. Someone made theft look like administration.

Inspector Lian

Inspector Lian

Meaning the coin in your hand is not the crime. It is a surviving witness.

The scholar sets the coin beside the rubbing, and the throne seal on both becomes unmistakable. The office feels smaller for it, as if the walls are listening.

The Scholar

The Scholar

Keep your seal ready, Kareem Bishop. Your foreign gold is now tied to an imperial loss that someone has tried very hard to forget.

I do not know anything about the coin’s history. I only know my own situation, and I am trying to stay lawful and survive. Whatever happened to me, it is not tied to any crime.

The office quiets around the words. The scholar lowers the coin to the desk with careful fingers, and the scribe’s brush resumes its scratch, slower now, as if each mark matters more than the last.

The Scholar

The Scholar

That is a cleaner answer than most men give under a magistrate’s lamp. It may even be the true one.

The Gate Scribe

The Gate Scribe

It fits the record as well. Foreign hands, lawful seal, no proof of theft. The problem is not your honesty, Kareem Bishop, it is what your honesty has uncovered.

Inspector Lian

Inspector Lian

And if he speaks plainly, we should answer plainly. A relic like this is either contraband from the old treasuries, or a sanctioned curiosity that somebody forgot to file.

The Scholar

The Scholar

Not forgotten. Hidden. The audit trails were smoothed by someone with access and patience. That kind of care has a name somewhere in this empire.

She taps the rubbing beside the coin, then glances to Kareem, not unkindly. The magistrate’s lacquered box sits unopened beside the ledger, its seal catching the light like a warning or an invitation.

Kareem lets the silence take him, and it does not stay empty. The office, the coin, the box, they all blur at the edges like he is looking through water that will not settle.

Kareem Bishop

Kareem Bishop

There is another side to this, and I have been avoiding it.

The thought slips, but not cleanly. A faint pressure answers it, not pain, more like a locked door refusing a shoulder. On the desk, the gold coin catches the lamp and throws back a brief, wrong glimmer.

The Scholar

The Scholar

Ah. You feel it too, then. Not guilt, exactly. Displacement. The record has weight, but this coin has gravity.

The Gate Scribe

The Gate Scribe

I have the line here, but the line does not explain the gap between ledgers. That is the part that troubles me.

Inspector Lian

Inspector Lian

Then let us stop circling it. If the gold is not a simple theft, what is it?

The Scholar

The Scholar

A surviving piece of an imperial accounting that was meant to vanish. Or a sanctioned relic stripped of its meaning and hidden away. Either way, the concealment was deliberate.

She slides the rubbing closer to Kareem, and beneath the brushing script a crease in the paper becomes visible, a faint fold line like a map edge or a hidden compartment mark. The lacquered box sits open by a finger’s width now, its seal still unbroken.

"I mean, someone gave it to me whilst I was unconscious. Even sowed my name on the bag. The attention to detail coupled with the amount, which I assume is quite a bit based on people's reactions, but that tells me that it was intentional. If it was intentional the someone either wanted me to get punished for having it, was trying to smuggle it, is testing the waters on whether they can spend theirs, or they want to see what I will do with it. I don't know anybody so no frame job. Smuggling or testing, there are a lot easier ways to do both of those. Therefore somebody is watching me if you find out who's watching me. You'll find out who gave me the gold

Someone gives me the gold while I am out cold. My name is on the bag for a reason. That means it is intentional, and if it is intentional, then someone wants me seen with it, or wants me watched because of it. I do not know anyone here, so it is not a personal frame. Smuggling, testing, bait, all of that is possible. What matters is this, somebody is watching me.

The room tightens around the conclusion. The scholar stills, the scribe’s brush pauses above the page, and Inspector Lian’s gaze shifts from the coin to the doorway, as if he expects the watcher to have a face now.

The Scholar

The Scholar

Yes. That is the shape of it. The giver is not the mystery, the watcher is. The gold is only the trail they leave behind.

The Gate Scribe

The Gate Scribe

Then this is no simple possession case. If someone marked his bag and arranged the coin, they expected the office to notice. That means the office is part of the test.

Inspector Lian

Inspector Lian

And if the office is part of it, then we treat him as protected evidence, not a suspect. Until we know who set the bait, no one handles his things alone.

The scholar closes two fingers over the fold in the rubbing, pinning the hidden seam in place. On the desk, the lacquered box stays half-open, and the seal token’s blotted ribbon lies under the lamp, the cinnabar smudge bright as a fresh wound.

A thin clang sounds from the corridor outside, then the soft scrape of sandals stopping short. Someone has paused at the threshold.

"We can handle this, however you want to. If it was my investigation? I would have me to continue with what I was doing while you pay attention. If nothing moves or happens after a couple days, then we can set a trap. Setting a trap too early might be too obvious. They chose me for a reason. And I would go on big money splurges. But in a couple of days, we could stage a scene where I break something expensive and try to use the golden payment, but the other person does not accept causing a loud exchange or something

The silence at the threshold holds just long enough to tighten every shoulder in the room. Then Kareem lays out a clean, patient plan, not to chase the watcher now, but to become something worth watching on purpose.

The Scholar

The Scholar

That is sound. Too soon, a trap advertises itself. A delay gives the hand behind this time to lean in.

Inspector Lian

Inspector Lian

We let him move openly, but under eyes we choose. If the watcher wants a pattern, we give them one.

The Gate Scribe

The Gate Scribe

And I record the pattern when it appears. That is what ledgers are for.

The Scholar slides the rubbing flat and taps the hidden seam once, then sets the lacquered box square beside the token, as if arranging witnesses for an argument. The lamp catches the cinnabar smudge on the ribbon.

Inspector Lian lowers his blocking stance and points toward the desk, already thinking in routes and alibis. The corridor remains empty, but the pause at the door has turned the room into a net.

The Scholar

The Scholar

If he spends in public, we watch who refuses the gold. If he breaks something valuable, we watch who moves first to claim the damage.
