Angela beats the climb in a single hard rise, then lands on the rooftop garden above the city. Wind cuts clean and cold here, carrying wet stone and green leaf instead of smoke.

The Child clings to her shoulder as the ruined skyscraper sways in the distance. Below, the wasteland lies flat and pale, like a kingdom stripped for parts.

At the center of the rooftop, a clear spring bubbles from a cracked basin wrapped in rusted rebar and old planters. Vines crawl over shattered concrete, stubborn and bright.

Angela Diaboli

Angela Diaboli

The water is real.

Ben

Ben

Is this your place?

Angela and the boy stand alone in the hush. Far below, the compound is only a smear of smoke now, and the spring keeps spilling light into the broken garden.

Claim the rooftop spring as your domain

Yes, child. This Rooftop Oasis was forged from my divine magic. The water is ckean, the plants are lively and the fortified tower we stand atop keeps this place safe from from the savages below. This is my domain and only I choose who may be here. And i have chosen you as my first guest.

The boy’s grip loosens when Angela names the roof as hers. The spring gurgles between them, bright and steady, while the cold wind brushes his wet cheek.

Angela Diaboli

Angela Diaboli

Yes. This rooftop oasis is mine. The water is clean, the plants are alive, and this tower keeps it safe. You are my first guest.

Ben

Ben

Guest... not prisoner?

He looks past her shoulder to the basin, then to the drop beyond the broken parapet. The word lands, but so does the height.

Ben

Ben

It is pretty. It is also high. Too high.

Angela’s hold stays firm. The boy sees the steel under the vines, the cracked concrete around the spring, and the trembling of the Hag’s hands flashes through his memory like a stain.

Ben

Ben

If it is yours, can I still leave when I want?

The spring keeps bubbling. The question hangs in the garden with the smell of wet stone, warm leaf, and old rust.

Claim the rooftop spring as your domain

If there is a home you wish me to return you to, i will. However you will be safest here under my protection.

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

Angela’s offer settles over the rooftop like a cloak. The boy stops staring at the drop, and looks at her instead, trying to read the rule inside her face.

Ben

Ben

You would really take me back... if I asked?

The spring burbles at their feet. The answer is there in the clean water, the guarded height, the hard strength of her arms, all of it honest and all of it final.

Ben

Ben

It is safe here. That is what makes it strange.

His shoulders creep up as the truth lands. A refuge can still have walls. A queen can still call a cage a garden.

Ben

Ben

I... I do not know where home is now.

Wind stirs the vines. The memory of the Hag’s trembling hands flickers through him again, and the rooftop suddenly feels less like rescue than a choice he does not fully understand.

Then here you will stay until i find your home. Please make yourself comfortable.

Angela lowers the boy to the edge of the cracked basin, keeping one hand at his back as the spring murmurs beside them. The rooftop wind worries his hair and the vines, but her grip does not slacken.

Then stay here until I find your home. Make yourself comfortable.

Ben

Ben

You would let me stay... really?

He looks past her shoulder at the garden, at the clean water, at the high walls of broken concrete that make the sky feel narrow.

Ben

Ben

It is safe. That is what makes it feel wrong.

His feet touch the stone fully for the first time, and he does not run. The motion is small, but it changes the rooftop, from rescue to waiting.

Ben

Ben

If this is yours, then I do not know what I am meant to be here.

Consider yourself my child until i find your real parents. I will care fir and protect you, and all i ask in return is that if or when i find your parents they must worship me as their goddess.

If I find them, they will honor me as their goddess.

The boy’s eyes widen at the word goddess. The spring trembles in the cracked basin, and the thin wind threads through the vines like a whisper he cannot quite trust.

Ben

Ben

Your child...?

Ben

Ben

He stares at her hand, then the garden, as if measuring the shape of a cage made of clean water.

He does not back away, but his shoulders lock tight. Around the rooftop, the ruin stays quiet, as though listening.

Ben

Ben

Then what am I to you, if not free?

If you have no home to return to then you will be my responsibility indefinitely. I will raise you until you are ready to journey on your own and in this scenerio i only ask in return that you send people you meet to come and worship me.

He flinches at first, then looks past her shoulder to the ruined city, as if measuring how far her promise reaches.

Ben

Ben

You would keep me that long... and ask that of me?

Angela does not move. The boy’s hands curl and uncurl at his sides, and the old fear in his face gives way to something colder, the understanding that safety can have rules.

Ben

Ben

If you guard me, then I am yours to send. I will tell them.

The words land between them like a pact. Around the basin, the vines stir once more, and the spring’s surface smooths as if settling into place.

I smile and kneel down to his level, asking him his name

Angela lowers herself to one knee on the cracked stone, careful and deliberate. The garden wind tugs at her hair as she comes level with the boy beside the basin.

Angela Diaboli

Angela Diaboli

She smiles faintly. “What is your name?”

The Child watches her face instead of the spring. His shoulders stay tight, but he answers the move, not retreating.

Ben

Ben

I... I do not know if it matters anymore.

Angela holds the level gaze. The question hangs there until the boy swallows, then gives in to it.

Ben

Ben

It is Ben.

The name lands softly. He looks ashamed of how small it sounds in the open air, and one hand drifts toward the basin rim as if the stone can steady him. A thin tremor in the water catches the light, and somewhere below, far off, the memory of the Hag’s trembling hands seems to linger in the stillness.

I ask Ben to please make himself at home, as i walk over to my throne carved out of the concrete and overgrown with vibrant plantlife, and take a seat.

Angela rises from the cracked stone and crosses to the overgrown throne, the vines parting around her boots. The seat waits in the open garden like a claim made physical.

Angela Diaboli

Angela Diaboli

Make yourself at home, Ben.

She settles onto the concrete throne, and the plant growth creaks softly under her weight. A few petals shake loose onto the stone.

Ben

Ben

At home... here?

Ben does not move toward the edge. He stays by the basin, staring up at her seat, then at the water, as if measuring the distance all over again.

Ben

Ben

It looks safe. That is what frightens me.

The spring trembles once more, and the rooftop wind threads through the vines. Angela's throne holds, but the girlish softness of the garden does not hide how high the sky still is.

I kniw you think the safety i offer is a trap. But i assure you i wish no harm upon an innocent child. You may rest in the beds, eat the food, drink and bathe in the water. You may do whatever you wish. And if you wish to leave, tell me and i shall show you the exit.

Angela's words settle over the rooftop like warm ash. Ben looks from the basin to the beds, then back to her, as if each promise might vanish if he blinks.

Ben

Ben

You mean I can choose?

He inches closer to the throne, not climbing, just drawing near enough to trust the distance. His shoulders loosen by a fraction.

Ben

Ben

No one has said that to me before.

The spring murmurs under the wind. Petals drift between them and settle on Angela's knees, then the stone.

Ben

For now, all i wish from you is to do as you wish

Angela lets the silence answer for her. Ben absorbs it, then the tension in his shoulders drains as if a knot has finally been cut loose.

Ben

Ben

Then... I want to look around.

He steps away from the basin, not running, just testing the roof as if it might object. His attention flicks to the vines, the broken planters, the water, and back again to her throne.

Ben

Ben

I can breathe here. It feels strange.

The petals at Angela's feet stir in the wind while Ben crouches near the spring, curious now instead of cornered.

Ben

Ben

If this is mine too... where do I begin?

From above, the garden reads like a small island of green on broken concrete, Angela centered on the throne and Ben moving freely around the basin, no hands on him now.

You may explore the whole garden and the top 3 floors of the building below. Every other floor is off limits as they are trapped with defenses meant to jeep out savage intruders.

Angela turns the welcome into a map. Ben listens as she gestures out the garden, then the levels below, drawing the line where his steps are allowed to go.

Angela Diaboli

Angela Diaboli

You may roam the garden, and the top three floors below. The rest stays sealed.

Ben’s face tightens. The spring, the throne, the broken paths, all of it still seems open, but the words below land like a locked door.

Ben

Ben

So it is safe up here. But only up here.

He looks down toward the stairwell opening, then back to Angela, trying the shape of her rule against his fear. The roof breeze carries petals over the stone between them.

Ben

Ben

If I go where you said, and stay out of the rest, that is enough?

Angela gives him the answer in her stillness. Ben swallows, then nods once, slower than before, as if accepting the weight of the roof with it.

Before he starts exploring I ask what he thinks my rule means

Angela Diaboli

Angela Diaboli

What do you think my rule means?

Ben glances once at the sealed stairwell, then back to her. The petals at his feet shift as he draws a careful breath.

Ben

Ben

It means I do not leave without your leave. It means the roof is yours, and I am in it.

Ben

Ben

He says it like a lesson he is trying not to get wrong.

The answer settles over the garden. Ben’s shoulders loosen a fraction, but his eyes keep returning to the boundary below.

Ben

Ben

I think it means I stay where you can see me, and I do not pretend that is freedom.

Ben’s gaze lifts, then flicks to the stairwell boundary again. The fear in him changes shape, less trapped animal now, more a child trying to understand a terrible kindness.

Ben

Ben

So I am not a prisoner, but I am still watched.

Ben

Ben

That is softer than a jail, and colder than home.

A breeze stirs the petals near the basin. Somewhere in the back of the roof, the old spring keeps its quiet, steady whisper.

Ben

Ben

Safest exit. Return if I want. He looks at the stairwell, then back at the garden, like he is measuring both with the same shaky courage.

Ben

Ben

So I am not trapped here. You would really walk me out yourself.

Angela’s answer lands cleanly. Ben’s face drains of some fear, but not all of it, because kindness here still carries walls.

Ben

Ben

If I leave, and the city is still dead out there, then what am I supposed to trust?

The old spring whispers under the roof stones while the distant ruin beyond the garden stays silent. Ben waits, small against the basin, for the shape of Angela’s rule to become something he can hold.

In the wastes you can not trust anything other than your own instincts. Here, however, in the safety of my domain, you can trust me to take care of everyone and everything.

In the wastes, you trust only your instincts. Here, in my domain, you can trust me to keep you safe.

Ben

Safe. The word hits him harder than the height did. He studies the basin, the stairwell, the roof stones, as if looking for the trap inside the promise.

Ben

Ben

So you really mean it. Not just the part about letting me leave.

Angela’s certainty answers before the wind can steal it. Ben swallows, and the fear in his face shifts from sharp to quiet, less like panic now and more like a boy trying to understand what kind of place would bother to protect him.

Ben

Ben

Then... if something comes up here, you handle it. If I do what you say, this is still my place too?

The question hangs between them. Below the garden wall, the ruined city stays dead and distant, while the spring keeps murmuring under the stones like it has already accepted the answer.
