The rooftop garden welcomes them back in the sunset hush, all broken concrete, hanging vines, and tired light. Angela Diaboli takes her seat of authority while the others drift into their places around her.

Ben kneels by the basin, fingers busy with soil and stems, checking each plant like it matters. The scarred boar settles near the planters, heavy and watchful, but calm.

Marek eases a crate beside the wall and looks over the garden with the careful pride of someone guarding a hard-won thing. The Stranger hangs back, quiet and deferential.

At the edge of the roof, the Pale Entity stands still as a post, obeying without needing a reminder. Below the soft rustle of leaves, the city gives off a distant, harmless hum.

Ben

Ben

The lettuce took. A few of the roots were dry, but it took.

Marek

Marek

Then tomorrow we move the broken pots before they crack any more. I can patch the frame too.

The last gold of day slips off the skyline. For a moment, the rooftop feels less like a fort and more like a home being built in plain sight.

Angela gestures to the open space beside the throne, and the invitation lands without fanfare. Ben looks up first, then Marek, both of them pausing as if the words themselves are a small luxury.

Ben

Ben

Yeah. I can do that.

Ben pushes off from the basin and crosses to her side, leaving the trowel by the plants. Marek follows with a slow, careful step, his gaze flicking once to the roofline, then back to Angela.

Marek

Marek

If this is a command, I obey. If it is a kindness, I accept it.

They sit. The shift is small, but it changes the garden, shoulders loosening around the ruined chair, the evening settling deeper around them.

Ben

Ben

It smells better up here than anywhere else I remember.

Marek

Marek

That is because you made it. Both of you did.

A hard metallic clink answers from below the tower, faint but sharp. The old floor gives a tired groan under the roof, and a few dust grains sift down through the cooling light.

Marek

Marek

...That sound was not there before.

Have one of the expendable raiders go check it out

One of you. Go look into that sound below.

The order drops into the dusk like a stone. Marek straightens at once, while the Stranger’s head lifts from his usual lowered angle.

Marek

Marek

I will send the expendable one.

He turns and points with two fingers, and the Stranger rises without protest. The knife at Marek’s belt shifts, then slips free and lands in the leaves with a dull click.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Understood. I go now.

The Stranger starts for the access hatch, shoulders hunched against the tower’s groan. Dust shakes loose overhead, and the old ladder below answers with a faint metal rattle from the dark.

Ben

Ben

The whole building is waking up.

Angela lowers back into her meal as dusk thins over the garden. Marek settles beside the throne, and Ben watches the hatch a moment longer before easing his shoulders, the tower’s groan fading into the hush around them.

Ben

Ben

If it keeps breathing up through the floor, maybe the whole place wants dinner too.

Is the tower stable?

NO, AND WORSE (Unlikely, rolled 90)

A violent shudder rips through the floorboards, sending the bowl in Angela's lap skittering across the stone. Dust cascades from the ceiling as the tower groans, a deep and sickening sound of metal shearing against concrete that suggests the foundation is failing far faster than anticipated.

The sanctuary is not the fortress I believed it to be.

I command the overgrowth to wrapp around and support the tower

Angela lifts her hand and the rooftop answers. Vines surge from the cracked planters and seam into the broken stone, webbing around the tower’s edge as if stitching a wound shut.

Below, roots spear into the fractures and hold. The worst groan changes pitch, then thins into a long, tense creak instead of a collapse.

Marek

Marek

It is holding.

Ben stares at the floor, then at the living braces curling up the walls, his shoulders easing as dust settles around him.

Angela Diaboli

The tower is obeying.

For a breath, the garden is still. Sunset catches on the leaves, and the old access ladder down into the dark hangs motionless beside the newly gripped stone.

Marek

Marek

The lower levels are still making noise, but the roof should stand now. What do you want watched first?
