Adventure of Tancred du Forietan

The Woman yanks Tancred toward the stair, boots skidding on wet dust as the crypt groans around them. Overhead, stone ticks loose in the dark like teeth.

Tancred is half-dragged, half-led as a slab splits behind them. The Ghost hovers in the collapsing gloom, his face strained with warning.

A fresh crack races across the floorboards. Dust swallows the crypt mouth, and the old chamber coughs out a wind that smells of cold earth and iron.

Together they lunge for the stair as the last light in the crypt flickers behind them, then is buried under stone.

Tancred catches The Woman’s hand and drives his shoulder into the heap of rubble. Stones shift, then give way just enough for them to force a path through the choking dust.

The Ghost drifts lower, his face sharp with alarm as the ceiling answers with another deep crack. Tancred’s sword arm clears a falling slab, and the pair break free of the worst of the collapse.

Behind them, the crypt mouth starts to choke itself shut under fresh stone. The altar’s buried thrum fades into the walls, and the blue ember in Tancred’s chest-side blade gutters low.

The Ghost points with a trembling hand, and the answer lands with the force of a map. Tancred gets the route at once, even as dust pours thicker from the ceiling behind them.

A fresh groan rolls through the church above, and grit rains from the stair arch. The hidden passage shudders, then spits loose mortar across Tancred’s shoulder.

She tugs forward, and Tancred’s blackened palm flashes in the dim as the ember at his chest-side blade flickers low. The crypt behind them seals itself under stone with a muffled thud.

The stair ahead opens on a draft of cold night air. Somewhere above, the church gives one last settling crack, and the exit is now the only clear way left.

Tancred takes the stairs two at a time, the Woman at his shoulder, the Ghost ahead by a breath. The passage bends left exactly where it should, and the chill of the night yanks at them through a split in the wall.

They clear the chapel wall and the bell tower never gets a clean strike at them, only a deep, dead toll that shivers through stone and stops short behind the turn. Dust sifts from the arch as the route behind begins to choke itself shut.

At the outer door, Tancred pushes through into raw darkness. Cold air spills over his scarred face, and the church groans once behind him, as if offended to be left behind.

Stone grinds in the doorway. The inner passage narrows to a sliver of black, then shuts with a final, damp thud, cutting the church off like a buried throat.

Outside, the night opens wide and hostile around them. Behind the wall, the altar’s buried hum is gone, but Tancred feels the entity’s attention settle on him all the same.
