Captain Valerius drives his shoulder into the Shadowed Figure, trying to hold it off the ledger. The thing twists mid-lunge and the old pages whip open, ink darkening like fresh blood in the lamplight.

The relic basin answers with a violent shudder. Frost cracks, dust drops from the ceiling, and the tether in the walls snaps taut with a sickening pull.

Tancred du Forgietan

Tancred du Forgietan

The ledger is the target. Not me.

Tancred staggers as a pulse of necrotic force rolls through the room. The ruined reliquary groans inward, stone grinding stone, as if the whole chamber is trying to swallow its own records.

Captain Valerius

Captain Valerius

Tancred, move. I have the book.

The Shadowed Figure claws for the open pages, hunger fixed on the ink. Behind it, a shelf collapses in a spray of mortar, and a black seam opens across the floor toward the basin.

Keep the ledger from being destroyed

I draw the broken ancestral blade, and slash at the Shadowed Figure with it. Attempting to push Captain Valerius and the book to safety.

Tancred drives the broken ancestral blade up from the floor in a hard, low arc. The jagged edge bites through the Shadowed Figure’s reaching hands and snaps its lunge sideways, away from the ledger.

Captain Valerius catches the opening and shoves the book toward the basin with his shoulder, dragging it clear of the grasping fingers. The ink on the open pages shivers and smears into black runoff.

The Shadowed Figure recoils, cloak and limbs collapsing inward as if the cut has severed more than flesh. A rusted key flashes in its grip, then vanishes into the dust as it stumbles back from the page.

Captain Valerius

Captain Valerius

Keep it moving, Tancred. I have the ledger.

The floor seam yawns wider beneath them, and cold air pours through it like breath from a grave. One corner of the ledger curls and blackens where the shadow spill touches it.

The Shadowed Figure drags itself toward the threshold instead of the book, warier now, head angled toward Tancred’s blade. The chamber keeps collapsing, but the record still lies in Valerius’s reach.

I will pursue the Shadowed Figure, aiming specifically for the hand holding the key. Shouting back to Valerius, "Captain, take the ledger and flee from this place."

Tancred lunges through the cold draft and catches the Shadowed Figure’s reaching wrist before it can steady the rusted key. His broken blade clips the hand cleanly, and the key jerks free into the air.

Valerius snatches the ledger to his chest and turns away from the basin, using his shoulder to shield the pages from the black spill. The open book stays in his grasp, but one page crackles at the edge.

Captain Valerius

Captain Valerius

I have it. Move.

The Shadowed Figure recoils toward the threshold, clutching its injured hand. The key tumbles across the frost-dusted stones and skids to a stop beside the widening seam.

Tancred du Forgietan

Captain, take the ledger and flee from this place.

Valerius hesitates only long enough to glance up, then backs toward the exit with the ledger held high. A strip of black shadow crawls over the page margins, but the spine holds.

From Valerius’s retreating view, Tancred stands between him and the threshold, blade raised against the figure and the falling dust. The key lies in the open, and the shadow at the doorway pulls back as if it has lost its grip.

I will attempt to grab the rusted key. "Thou should hath remained in eternal slumber. May the Lord of the Dead hath mercy upon thine soul." I will shove the Shadowed Figure back into the passage it first emerged from, before turining and following the Captain.

Tancred seizes the rusted key from the stones and drives his shoulder into the Shadowed Figure. The impact hurls them backward into the passage, and its grasping hand vanishes into the dark beyond the threshold.

The figure hits the wall of the passage and crumples there, stunned long enough for Tancred to wrench clear. Frost shakes loose from the ceiling as the opening behind it narrows with a grinding cough of stone.

Valerius backs farther toward the exit, ledger clutched tight against his chest. The black smear on the page edge crawls deeper into the margins, but the book stays whole in his arms.

Tancred turns and follows, key in hand, while the threshold behind him breathes cold shadow. The passage reeks of dust and old grave air, as if the reliquary itself is trying to remember their names.

Too late.

Above them, a seam in the ceiling splits wider, showering the floor with frost and grit. Valerius reaches the outer dark, but the ledger’s corner blackens as the chamber gives one last convulsive shudder.

I shield Valerius and the ledger to the exit. "Valerius, dost thou have some kind of holy seal or item that can cleanse this shadowed rot on the ledger? I fear that the entity was attempting to destroy this tome."

Tancred throws his body between Valerius and the ledger, forcing the captain’s retreat to bend around him. Frost spits from the crack above, and the passage breathes that same grave-cold through the torn arch behind them.

Tancred du Forgietan

Valerius, dost thou have some holy seal, or other thing, to cleanse this rot upon the ledger? I fear the shadow meant to ruin it.

Captain Valerius

Captain Valerius

A seal, no. But I have this.

He pulls a small silver medallion from beneath his mail, warm from his skin, and angles it over the blackened margin without stopping. The stain curls back from the metal like a living bruise.

Captain Valerius

Captain Valerius

My commander’s blessing. Half faith, half habit, enough to keep a page from being taken whole.

The Shadowed Figure

The Shadowed Figure

You cradle it like it can be saved.

The figure’s voice comes thin from the threshold shadow, but it does not advance. Tancred’s shoulder holds steady against the crumbling arch, and the ledger remains in Valerius’s grasp, blackened only at the edge.

Captain Valerius

Captain Valerius

It can. And if it cannot, then it will at least testify before it dies.

I give Valerius a nod, "Hurry, Captain. The truth must be revealed, not kept hidden. I shall buy thee time." I will pivot and charge at the Shadow to throw it bodily across the threshold it came from.

Tancred drops the shield of his body from the ledger and drives toward the threshold shadow, sword arm low and hard. The cold draft hits like a hand from the grave as the ruined arch groans above him.

He gets both hands on the Shadowed Figure and hurls it bodily back through the torn passage. Dust bursts out around its shoulders, and the rusted key flashes once in the gloom as it is forced away from the book.

The figure slams across the threshold and folds into the dark beyond it, halted at the lip of the ruin. The ledger stays in Valerius's grasp, but the black stain crawls another finger's width under the silver medallion.

Captain Valerius

Captain Valerius

Good. Hold there a moment longer.

Stone cracks overhead, and a ribbon of frost showers down between Tancred and the doorway. The passage behind the figure shudders, beginning to close on the shadow's retreating shape.

The Shadowed Figure

The Shadowed Figure

You can throw me out. You cannot throw out what was written into it.

Valerius clamps the medallion flat against the ledger, forcing the corruption to flare and blanch at the edge. In the same instant, the shadow at the threshold stiffens, as if it feels the page slip farther from its claim.
