The Basin Feeds on Witness
Captain Valerius
Captain Valerius

The basin’s pale glow deepens without warning. Frost crawls over Captain Valerius’s gloves, and his breath vanishes into the still air as the bronze plate remains unnaturally steady.

The Keeper Below

The Keeper Below

This is no harmless response. The basin is a binding engine. It feeds upon nearby life and converts your renewed oath into fuel.

Valerius’s shoulders sag. The silver medallion at his chest dims while thin darkness gathers beneath the frost, climbing his wrists like ink beneath skin.

Captain Valerius

Captain Valerius

I can stand. Do not break the oath on my account. If this engine feeds on witness, then my presence may be the intended price.

The Keeper Below

The Keeper Below

Your presence is sufficient, but not required. The oath binds protection to sacrifice only because the old corruption remains beneath this plate.

The chamber’s carved dates begin to pulse in sequence. Each pale flare leaves Valerius weaker, while the open-hand sigil above the basin refuses to change.

Captain Valerius

Captain Valerius

Tancred, the mechanism is choosing between the oath and the witness. Find what still gives it permission to take.

Keeper, is this curse coming from the distant kinsman who seeks my seat? If I can stop him, would the Captain be safe?

The open-hand sigil dims beneath Tancred’s question. The darkness beneath Captain Valerius’s frostbound skin stops climbing, as though the chamber itself listens for the answer.

The Keeper Below

The Keeper Below

Yes. Albrecht Vey carries the corrupted succession, and through him the old order feeds this engine. His claim is the curse’s living conduit.

The Keeper Below

The Keeper Below

Break his claim before the engine completes its taking, and Captain Valerius will be released. The darkness will withdraw, leaving him weakened but alive.

A fresh line appears across the bronze plate, naming Albrecht beside the words false keeper. The pulse beneath Valerius’s gloves falters, and his breath returns in a thin cloud.

Then the answer is clear. Stop Vey’s kinsman, and this chamber loses its authority over me. I can endure what remains.

The Keeper Below

The Keeper Below

Do not mistake release for pardon. Albrecht must be stripped of the stolen seal before the old command can seek another bearer.

Keeper, where is Albrecht Vey? I shall go to him now and stop his madness.

The Keeper Below

The Keeper Below

Below the old chapel, beneath the abandoned ossuary. He stands before the succession stone, forcing your bloodline to recognize him.

The bronze plate opens like a silent mouth, revealing a stair descending through packed earth. Pale fire marks each step, while the darkness around Valerius loosens its grip.

Captain Valerius

Captain Valerius

Go. I will remain here and preserve the oath. If the engine stirs again, the Keeper will know.

Tancred descends beneath the chapel. The air grows thick with grave dust and old incense, and distant stone groans answer the measured fall of his boots.

The stair ends at an ossuary chamber. Albrecht Vey stands before a blackened stone bearing Trosylvia’s crest, one bloodied hand pressed into its hollow.

Ser Albrecht Vey

Ser Albrecht Vey

You came at last, returned heir. Kneel, and the house may still accept you. Refuse, and I will make your dead witness my enthronement.

“I draw my blade, but make no move to engage just yet, "Kinsman, I hath indeed returned. So I shall state the same demand to thee: kneel and come be apart of mine house proper. I doth not wish to cause the extinction of my bloodline completely."”

Tancred draws his blade without advancing. Its reforged edge catches the ossuary’s pallid light, and the blackened succession stone shudders beneath Albrecht’s bloodied hand.

Tancred du Forgietan

Kinsman, I hath indeed returned. I state the same demand to thee: kneel, and become part of mine house proper. I would not see my bloodline extinguished completely.

The blade’s light spreads across the bone-lined walls. Names carved into the ossuary awaken one by one, while the stone rejects the blood beneath Albrecht’s palm.

Ser Albrecht Vey

Ser Albrecht Vey

You offer kinship after I was made a trespasser in my own inheritance? Yet you speak of preservation, not dominion. That is the old oath’s true shape.

Albrecht withdraws his hand. The hollow seals without blood, and the shadowed crest above him fractures, shedding its false thorns onto the floor.

Ser Albrecht Vey

Ser Albrecht Vey

Very well, Tancred du Morvannoux. I kneel, and I enter your house as kinsman, not claimant. Let the dead witness that I yield the stolen succession.

He lowers himself before the succession stone. The ossuary exhales a long, cold breath, and every awakened name settles into silence as the false enthronement dies.

“I place my hands on his shoulders, raising him up to his feet, "Welcome, cousin. Our house shall be united in strength of arms forevermore." As I embrace him”

Tancred places both hands upon Albrecht’s shoulders and raises him from his knees. The succession stone remains dark, accepting the gesture without protest.

Welcome, cousin. Our house shall be united in strength of arms forevermore.

Tancred draws Albrecht into an embrace before the silent ossuary. For one breath, the cold withdraws from the chamber, and the bones seem to listen rather than accuse.

Ser Albrecht Vey

Ser Albrecht Vey

Then let the dead witness more than my surrender. Let them witness that I stand beside you freely, and that no borrowed seal commands my loyalty.

As Albrecht steps back, the false thorns scattered around the stone crumble into black dust. Beneath them, the older star remains intact, plain and unadorned.

Ser Albrecht Vey

Ser Albrecht Vey

I know the lower passages, the hidden accounts, and the men who served the corrupted succession. I will give you all of it, cousin.

Far above, the chapel bell rings once. In the ossuary, the awakened names dim into peace, while a narrow stair opens behind the succession stone, leading toward the buried records.

Then lead, cousin. I know a faster way back, though the old passages may resent carrying a seal they no longer recognize.

The seal leaves a dark impression across Tancred’s palm as he turns toward the opened stair. Behind them, the succession stone gives one quiet knock, and the ossuary’s awakened names fall silent.

Albrecht guides Tancred through a cramped burial passage toward the chapel. The air grows warmer near the bronze plate, carrying the sharp scent of extinguished frost.

Captain Valerius

Captain Valerius

You took your time. I remain standing, though the engine has left my hands numb and my medallion cracked.

Captain Valerius is alive beside the bronze plate, pale and unsteady. The darkness has withdrawn from his wrists, while the Keeper’s open-hand sigil burns steadily above him.
