Three weeks after the reliquary, Tancred returns alone to Trosylvia. The road ends beneath broken battlements, where weeds fill old trenches and the village roofs sag beneath the weather.
The ancestral blade rests at his side, scarred and quiet. No ghostly mist coils through the lanes now, though shuttered windows watch him from behind the gatehouse.

the survivor at the gatehouse
Stop there. We know the crest, and we know what wore it before. Are you here to claim the ruins, lord, or merely count them?
A few survivors shelter behind the gatehouse, wrapped in patched cloaks. Their fear is wary rather than frantic, and one lowers the bar without opening the gate.
Beneath the cracked du Morvannoux crest, orange light breathes from a buried forge. The Smith steps from its shadow, soot-stained and older-looking, but unmistakably alive.

The Smith
I kept the old fire burning. Your house is cleansed, but it is not empty. Someone else has begun issuing orders in your name.
He gestures toward the manor hill. Fresh white notices hang on the ruined gate, bearing an unfamiliar seal beneath the words: By authority of the restored domain.

Discover who is issuing orders in Tancred's name
“I nod to the Smith in appreciation. Turning to the villagers I raise a hands showing I mean no harm, "Tell me, who hath laid claim to this land? Do they protect you as your former lords did?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +2)

Tancred nods to the Smith in appreciation, then raises both hands toward the villagers, palms open, making clear he comes without threat.

Tancred du Forgietan
Tell me, who hath laid claim to this land? Do they protect you as your former lords did?
The villagers exchange guarded looks. The gate opens another handspan, revealing faces hollowed by hunger and sleeplessness beneath the patched hoods.

the survivor at the gatehouse
A magistrate called Orlan Vey has claimed it, under a seal none here recognizes. His men came two months ago, counting homes and graves.

the survivor at the gatehouse
They protect the grain stores and the manor, not us. Three families vanished after refusing his levy. No lord of Trosylvia ever guarded us kindly, but at least your house stood between us and the night.

The Smith
Vey is no magistrate. His seal is a mask, and his orders are being issued from beneath the manor hill. The old foundations have begun answering him.
Behind the villagers, someone pulls back a shutter. Far uphill, one of the fresh white notices peels from the gate and folds inward, as though a breath moves beneath it.
“I wish to take a look at one of these parchments with Vey's decrees, as well as the banners draped on the battlements of my ancestral seat. Can I recognize any symbols from my learnings when I was alive?”
SUCCESS (Good Academics, rolled +2)

Tancred approaches the nearest notice and studies its parchment, then turns his gaze toward the banners sagging from the battlements. The villagers watch in silence.

Tancred du Forgietan
The seal is constructed, not inherited. Its outer strokes imitate magistrate’s authority, but the inner mark belongs to an older oath.
He recognizes the white seal’s central chevron from old diplomatic primers: a sign used by border adjudicators to mark seized estates. Beneath it, nearly hidden in the wax, lies a star pierced by three thorns.

The Smith
That is no magistrate’s device. The chevron gives it legal clothing. The star and thorns tell the dead who truly issued the order.
The battlement banners bear Trosylvia’s weathered colors, but the du Morvannoux crest has been altered. A black thread crosses the ancestral arms, matching the binding marks Tancred once found in the family records.

the survivor at the gatehouse
They replaced our banners after the first families vanished. Said the old crest invited rebellion. We kept one scrap hidden beneath the gatehouse floor.
Together, the parchment and banners reveal Vey’s claim as a legal disguise wrapped around an occult succession. The same star-and-thorns authority now marks the manor hill.
“I turn to the survivors and the Smith, "People of Trosylvia, I am Tancred du Forgietan. Formerly Tancred du Morvannoux: the last of House du Morvannoux before the desolation of my house by the Baroness Batory and her master: the cursed Duke Radovich. I hath clawed my way from the gates of death, to reclaim my lands and renew my oath to the land and its people: I shall defend all within my domain. You shall not go hungry, nor want for anything again." I turn to look at the Smith directly, "Venerable Smith, 'tis time to reforge my ancestral blade once and for all."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Tancred du Forgietan
People of Trosylvia, I am Tancred du Forgietan, formerly Tancred du Morvannoux. I am the last of my house, desolated by Baroness Batory and her master, Duke Radovich. I have clawed my way from death’s gates to reclaim these lands and renew my oath to their people. I shall defend all within my domain. You shall not go hungry or want again.
Silence holds the gatehouse. Then the survivor lowers the bar fully, and the villagers emerge into the road, not kneeling, but standing nearer together beneath the ruined crest.

the survivor at the gatehouse
Then be lord by what you do, not what the old stones remember. We have had enough of promises written by strangers.
Behind them, the white notices loosen from the walls. Their wax seals split without a hand touching them, and the star pierced by thorns darkens as though burned from within.

Tancred du Forgietan
Venerable Smith, it is time to reforge my ancestral blade once and for all.

The Smith
At last. Bring it to the old forge. I will break the Batory purpose from its metal and temper a new oath into the blade.
The Smith turns toward the buried forge, and orange fire rises beneath the stones. The ancestral blade answers with a low, steady chime as the villagers follow, carrying fuel, tools, and the first fragile signs of trust.
“I follow the Smith to reforge the blade.”

Tancred follows the Smith through the gatehouse and down a stair newly cleared from beneath the stones. Villagers carry fuel behind them, their footsteps gathering into a steady procession.

The Smith
Set the blade upon the anvil. Tonight, it answers no house, no baron, and no buried oath but the one freely chosen.
The old forge opens beneath the ruined foundations, its chimney breathing sparks into the dark. The Smith places the broken ancestral blade across black iron and raises his hammer.

The Smith
The first stroke breaks the claim. The second preserves what was yours. The third gives the metal a purpose of its own.
Hammer meets blade. The Batory markings flare once, then fracture into dull flakes. Beneath them, clean metal glows amber, reflecting Tancred’s silent presence beside the forge.

The Smith
Your blood opened the old lock, but your oath closes it. Hold steady, lord of Trosylvia.
The final stroke falls. The metal settles into a restored edge, plain and strong, while the forge exhales a long breath. Outside, the villagers begin rebuilding the gate beneath their own crest.
“Nodding in thanks to The Smith, I turn away from the forge. Leaving the reforged blade behind. "I must stop what this Magistrate has planned for my people and land, before I am fit to wield this blade once more." I pass the people rebuilding the gate, and move towards the manor hill”

Tancred nods in thanks to the Smith, then turns from the forge. The reforged blade remains upon the anvil, its amber edge cooling beneath the coals.

Tancred du Forgietan
I must stop what this magistrate has planned for my people and land, before I am fit to wield this blade once more.

The Smith
Then go without it. A weapon is not an oath, and Trosylvia needs its lord awake more than armed.
Tancred passes beneath the forge arch and returns to the village road. The people rebuilding the gate make room for him, their tools pausing as he walks toward the hill.

the survivor at the gatehouse
We will finish the gate, lord. Let the manor see that Trosylvia still stands.
Hammers resume behind him, measured and plain. Their rhythm follows Tancred uphill while the ruined manor rises ahead, its white notices stark against the weathered stone.

The Smith
Find what Orlan Vey is building beneath those foundations. When you return, the blade will be waiting.
