Night settles over the sheltered path below the manor hill. The air turns unnaturally cold, and frost gathers across the stones in a thin, widening trail.

Tancred du Forgietan
The frost is forming ahead of me, not behind.
The forge fire fades behind Tancred, where the Smith remains with the villagers and the unfinished blade. No footsteps follow him from Trosylvia.
At the bend, Captain Valerius emerges through the whitening dark. His cloak is rimed with frost, and one hand grips his drawn sword without seeming to notice.

Captain Valerius
Du Forgietan. I followed the same cold from the reliquary. It led me here, though I never chose this road.
He stops several paces away. Wind moves through the dead grass, carrying a voice beneath it, stretched thin across the hillside and shaped with deliberate familiarity.

Captain Valerius
The Shadowed Figure spoke your name through the wind. Then it said the manor was only the first door.

“I raise a hand in greeting to Captain Valerius, "Captain. Is this Magistrate that claims my lands familiar to thee? I hath been told the people suffer under his stewardship, so I shall reclaim my seat, and evict those who claim to rule in my name."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Tancred raises a hand in greeting. Frost whitens his fingers, then recedes as his voice carries across the dead grass.

Tancred du Forgietan
Captain. Is this Magistrate familiar to thee? I am told the people suffer under his stewardship. I shall reclaim my seat and evict those who rule in my name.

Captain Valerius
Orlan Vey is familiar. I saw his seal in the reliquary ledger, beneath the names of men who vanished into service.
Valerius lowers his sword, though he does not sheath it. The frost between them settles into a narrow path pointing uphill toward the manor.

Captain Valerius
He was no magistrate before this. He served as an assessor for border estates, collecting debts and marking houses for seizure. Now he claims authority through that star-and-thorns seal.

Captain Valerius
If you reclaim Trosylvia, you will find me beside you. But understand this: Vey is not merely ruling aboveground. The cold beneath the manor answers to him.
Far uphill, a bell tolls once from the manor ruins. No bell hangs there. The sound sinks into the frost, and the white trail brightens toward its source.

“I nod, "Then let us go forth and oust Orlan Vey. Without the Countess Batory's entourage present, I should be able to navigate the manor easily. I believe that I know where to go to find this man: he is deep in the bowels of my home."”
SUCCESS (Superb Investigation, rolled +2)

Tancred du Forgietan
Then let us go forth and oust Orlan Vey. Without Batory’s entourage, I can navigate the manor. He is deep in its bowels.
Tancred leads uphill through the whitening grass, while Captain Valerius follows at his shoulder. The manor’s ruined doors open before them without resistance, revealing a familiar descent beneath the entrance hall.

Captain Valerius
You remember the way? Then guide us. If Vey has altered the foundations, the house may still recognize your blood.
Tancred passes through corridors that twist beneath the dust, finding old servants’ stairs, sealed wine passages, and a disused chapel stair hidden behind the family crest. The manor yields its buried route.
At the bottom, black mortar fills a newly opened archway. Beyond it lies a vaulted undercroft, lit by candles burning with pale, smokeless flames. Fresh ledgers cover an iron table.

Orlan Vey
Tancred du Morvannoux. I wondered whether the house would admit you before the oath was finished.
Orlan Vey stands at the far end of the chamber beneath the star-and-thorns seal. Behind him, the manor’s foundations descend into a deeper shaft, where something knocks once against the stone.

“Tancred draws his longsword. But I would like to try and sense what this entity deeper in is”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +1)

Tancred draws his longsword. The blade catches the candlelight, and the pale flames bend toward him as though recognizing an older authority.

Tancred du Forgietan
The knocking is not coming from the shaft. It is answering from beneath it.
He stills himself and reaches through the manor’s layered silence with practiced occult attention. Beneath the stone, something vast turns its awareness upward.

Captain Valerius
What do you sense?
The presence is neither spirit nor beast. It is an oath given hunger, threaded through the foundations and fed by every name entered in Vey’s ledgers.

Orlan Vey
You feel it because the house remembers you, Tancred. It remembers the blood that first taught this darkness obedience.
The shaft exhales a breath of grave-cold air. In its depths, the entity fixes upon Tancred with patient recognition, while fresh ink begins moving across the nearest ledger.

“I point the blade towards Orlan Vey, "Orlan Vey. False Magistrate. This land doth not bow to thine will. Trosylvia belongs to House du Morvannoux. I hath returned to stake my claim to my domain once again. Leave this place in peace, and no harm shall come to thee. Whatever dark sorcery thou hath begun, it shall end now."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Tancred du Forgietan
Orlan Vey, false magistrate, this land does not bow to thee. Trosylvia belongs to House du Morvannoux, and I have returned to claim my domain. Leave in peace, end thy sorcery, and no harm shall come to thee.
Tancred’s blade points unwaveringly at Vey. The pale flames lean toward its edge, while the moving ink in the ledgers stops and retreats into silent black lines.

Orlan Vey
You claim the house, then. Very well. Let it be recorded that I depart by your command, not by its mercy.
Vey removes the star-and-thorns seal from his neck and drops it onto the iron table. The symbol cracks, and the candles gutter as the oath beneath the manor releases him.

Orlan Vey
The ledgers are yours. The work below is ended. I will not contest your claim, lord of Trosylvia.
The shaft exhales once, then falls still. A deep pressure withdraws through the foundations, leaving the undercroft cold but empty of hunger. Orlan Vey walks toward the stair without resistance.

Captain Valerius
He yields, and the sorcery has ceased. Your authority reached farther than his oath, du Forgietan.
“"Captain Valerius, the ledgers be thine to peruse. If thou finds anything of us, report thine findings to me." I will begin to move towards the shaft and begin to move towards teh undercroft. Making sure that whatever the entity below was is properly gone, or silent.”
SUCCESS (Great Occult Lore, rolled +4)

Tancred du Forgietan
Captain Valerius, the ledgers be thine to peruse. If thou finds anything of us, report thine findings to me.

Captain Valerius
I will. Their names, accounts, and hidden oaths shall pass through my hands before dawn.
Tancred moves toward the shaft and undercroft, sword held ready. Captain Valerius gathers the ledgers beneath one arm and begins examining their marked spines.
At the shaft’s lip, Tancred finds the cold has stopped. The pale flames remain upright, and no pressure, whisper, or movement answers from below.

Tancred du Forgietan
The entity has withdrawn, or it has learned silence.
He descends into the undercroft and searches the foundations, chapel stones, and ledger table. The black mortar is inert, and the hunger threaded through the manor is gone.

Captain Valerius
Tancred. These ledgers contain a map of every seized household, and a second passage beneath the old chapel. It is unsealed now.
