The reliquary groans like a throat closing. Frost and dust rain from the cracked vault above as the passage seals behind Tancred and Valerius. The ledger lies open between them, its blackened names quivering in the blue spill from Tancred’s palm. Ahead, the broken threshold to the church flickers with moonlight and moving shadow.

There. The tether still hangs on you. If the ledger is true, the break must be named before the ruin takes another claim.

Valerius braces himself against a leaning saint’s pedestal and tears a strip from his gauntlet, hands shaking only once. He points at the ledger’s final page, where the ink pools around a circled line and the du Batory sigil bleeds through the paper like a bruise.

Not severed. Relocated. Every oath here still wants a throat to live in.

The shadow at the stairwell thickens, drawn thin by the collapsing walls. It cannot advance, but it can wait. The church answers with a deep, hollow boom, and the old stone shudders as if something beneath it has heard its own name.

The ledger’s last line is the anchor. If the rite works, this is the moment.

Valerius holds the torn cloth, the ledger, and the silver medallion in a trembling bundle before Tancred. The final break is not yet made. The ruins crack wider, the tether tightens, and the decision waits in Tancred’s hands.

Tancred speaks the final line, and the ledger answers with a dry, hateful shiver. The blackened names recoil as if struck by winter, and the tether on his palm snaps into a thin blue thread of light that runs straight into the text before burning away.

It takes. Keep your hand there, du Forgietan.

The silver medallion in Valerius's grip goes cold enough to fog. The necrotic stain on the ledger blanches, then flakes from the page like ash, and the shadow at the threshold jerks back as though a nail has been driven through its reach.

The line holds. The tether is breaking.

A sharp sting cuts across Tancred's palm as the mark opens and seals again, leaving it raw and bleeding beneath the fading blue glow. Frost falls from the ceiling in a sudden sheet, and the cracked stone around the pedestal gives a low, settling groan.

That debt is named now. It cannot hide in the dark any longer.

The threshold shadow thins to a smear and then withdraws into the broken stairwell, no longer pressing forward. Valerius lowers the ledger carefully, breathing hard, while the last cold draft slides through the ruin and dies.
