Sister Ilse lunges for the blade, her fingers shaking with panic and purpose as the vault’s cold bites deeper into the bones. Her voice cracks as she cries that the debt must be paid in full, or the house will devour them all.

Sister Ilse
Pay it, Tancred. Pay it now, before it takes the rest of us.
Tancred keeps the blade just out of reach. The blackened names in the ledger seem to drink the amber light, and the altar answers with a low, hungry thrum.

Lady Natasha Batory
Listen to her. Even your servants understand the shape of survival.
Ilse flinches at Natasha’s smile, then reaches again, not for mercy, but for the hilt. Her eyes are wide and empty, as if she is watching something behind Tancred rather than him.

Sister Ilse
If he refuses, the vault opens wider. If he yields, perhaps it closes.
The chamber goes still for one terrible beat. Frost creeps over the carved stone, and the du Morvannoux crest glows faintly beneath Tancred’s hand, waiting for a choice the house can taste.

“Will the altar respond to my command if I speak the name of the forger aloud?”
NO (Likely, rolled 80)
Tancred speaks the name into the vault, but the altar remains cold and silent. The amber light flickers and dies, leaving the chamber in a suffocating, absolute stillness.
“I backhand Sister Ilse away from me and the blade. I want to look around this chamber for something that might be able to stop the shaking of the structure and the get the vault to respond in my favor.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -3)

Tancred snaps his arm across Sister Ilse's reach and drives her back from the blade. She stumbles hard against the frost-slick stone, breath catching in a thin gasp.

Sister Ilse
No, wait, you do not understand, it has to be paid...
The room answers with a dull shiver. Frost spiders farther over the carvings, and the altar gives off a faint, fragile hum from somewhere deep in the stone.

Tancred du Forietan
The carvings are waking. Not the altar, the walls.
Tancred turns with the broken ancestral blade still in hand and catches a narrow seam in the masonry, half-hidden behind the altar's shadow. Bone-white ash dusts the ledge beneath it, as if old records once rested there.
He forces the seam open. A cramped recess yields a warped iron clasp and a strip of dampened parchment, both chilled stiff with age.

Lady Natasha Batory
Well. There it is. The house is still listening.
As Tancred pulls the parchment free, the ember-light in the blade dips lower, and a sharp crack runs through the floor beside his boots. He has the proof and a new way to press the vault, but the jolt sends a thin split through the stone at his feet.
