The Awakening of the Root-Heart

The chamber groans. Roots bulge through stone, and the hollow in the wall tears wider, spilling pale fungus light over bones and mud. The root-heart wakes beneath Teef’s feet.

Cresher hauls herself up, blades ready, staring into the growing breach. The Unseen Watcher lies bleeding and still against the wall, their trap undone.

Cresher

There. That is the heart of it. If you want the glory, Teef, take it now.

From the widening hollow, a mass of roots heaves forward, twitching with pale glints like hungry eyes. Dust rains down in sheets as the chamber tightens around the awakening thing.

Cresher

Cresher

I hold the line. Break it, or be broken.

The root-heart is big enough to bury this room.

Teef stands at the edge of the surge, warhammer in hand, as the roots lunge and the last clear path to victory snaps open in front of her.

The Awakening of the Root-Heart

Teef drives her hammer into the root surge. The blow lands hard, and a curtain of splintered roots whips back through the breach, scattering pale glints into the dust.

The chamber shudders from the impact. Stone cracks wider overhead, and the root-heart recoils, its front ranks torn open by the strike.

Cresher

Cresher

Good. Keep that pressure on it.

Fresh roots spill through the gap anyway, thinner now but faster, groping across the floor toward Teef's boots and the blood-dark wall behind her.

Cresher shifts her weight and steps into the widening line, blades flashing as she braces beside the breach. The Unseen Watcher remains slumped and out cold in the dust.

The roots split under the hit.

Pale fungus light flickers across the torn opening. Beyond it, the root-heart still moves, and the chamber keeps opening around it.

The Awakening of the Root-Heart

The chamber still trembled, roots hissing back into the tearing stone.

Cresher

Cresher

That is it, Teef. Keep pressing. I have the breach.

Teef

Teef

Then hold fast. I am not done yet.

The root-heart recoiled, weakened, while the fallen watcher did not stir.

Rootfall collapsed inward around the broken heart, its hunger spent and its roar fading to a low, settling groan. Cresher held the line until the last roots went still, and Teef stood through the drain of the ritual, battered but unbroken. When the dust cleared, only silence remained, and the chamber belonged to the living once more.
