The trees open onto the rootfall, a sunken crater laced with petrified roots like ribs in the earth. Grey silt clings to fresh tracks at the rim, and the air reeks of rot and old spellwork.
Cresher draws both blades and steps to the edge. Her gaze locks on the disturbed silt, then on the shadows below, where something has already moved to meet them.

The Unseen Watcher
Too late to turn back now. The trail-skull was brought here on purpose.

The Unseen Watcher
If Teef wants the strongest claim, she has to take it from the thing waiting below.
A shape stirs among the roots, half-hidden by hanging moss and black soil. The watching presence is no longer only a pair of eyes in the dark, it is a challenge made flesh.

Cresher
Good. Let it come. If this is a trap, we break it open.
The path behind Teef is clear, but the crater ahead is a gauntlet. Whatever waits in the rootfall is tied to the skull, and to the answer she came to prove with steel.
“Teef wastes no time, she swings for the shape immediately.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +0)

Teef drives off the rim and commits to the opening blow, warhammer already descending toward the thing in the roots.
The shape lurches into the strike, black soil exploding as the hammer crashes through moss and twisted bark.
A crack of splintering wood and old bone rings through the crater. The hidden body buckles, no longer a shadow with intent, but a target hit true.

The Unseen Watcher
There it is. Hit it again, and keep your footing.
Cresher shifts at Teef’s side, blades up, watching the roots for whatever answer the impact shakes loose.

The Rootfall Shape
Hhrrk... trespass... claim...
“Teef swings again, this time for the head.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +1)

Teef’s second swing comes up hard and true, the hammer head arcing straight for the Rootfall Shape’s skull.
The blow lands with a wet crack of wood and old marrow, snapping the thing’s head sideways and hurling black soil across the crater floor.

The Rootfall Shape
Grrr... broken... not broken enough...
Roots jerk loose around its shoulders. The hidden body sags, its claim shattered, but it still clutches at the ground with one shaking hand.

The Unseen Watcher
Good. It felt that. Press it before it gathers itself.
Cresher shifts in close beside the rim, blades angled toward the opening wound in the roots, ready to charge if Teef drives in again.
“Teef goes for an overhead swing.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled -2)

Teef drives the hammer up and over in a brutal arc, all her weight behind the strike.
The head crashes down through the split roots, and the Rootfall Shape jerks under the impact as black soil bursts up around its shoulders.

The Rootfall Shape
Ghh... yes... break me open, then.
A thick root snaps free under the force, and the cavern fills with a dry crack that echoes off stone.

The Unseen Watcher
It is weakening. Keep the pressure on it.
Teef wrenches the hammer back, and a splinter bites her forearm, drawing a thin line of blood as wood chips rain into the crater.
Cresher surges one step closer to the opening, blades ready, while the thing below still claws at the soil and refuses to fall still.
“Teef bashes the thing again.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +1)

Teef drives the warhammer in again, and this time the Rootfall Shape gives ground. Its torso caves inward with a hollow crack, and the split roots around it shudder loose.

The Rootfall Shape
Yes. Harder. Make the cradle break.
The blow shears through the last binding roots. Black soil floods the hollow, and something pale flashes free from the wreckage at the thing’s core.

The Unseen Watcher
There. The skull is out.
Cresher steps over the rim, blades high, while the Rootfall Shape slumps apart and stops resisting as one body. The trail-skull lies exposed in the mud at Teef’s feet.

Teef
It is loose now.
The crater goes still except for settling chips and dark water seeping into the broken roots. The Unseen Watcher points once toward the prize, then toward the dark mouth of the crater beyond, as if waiting to see whether Teef takes it or lets someone else move first.
“Teef takes the skull, and hands it back to Cresher.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

Teef stoops into the crater mud and closes her hand around the trail-skull. The thing is cold and slick, and the black mire smears across her knuckles as she hauls it free.
She turns on her heel and extends it toward Cresher, holding it out at chest height like spoils won by right of force.

Cresher
Good. You earned this part.
Cresher lowers one blade and takes the skull from Teef with careful hands, the gesture respectful despite the mud and blood.

The Unseen Watcher
Then the test is not finished. The skull is only the bait.
The watcher points into the dark mouth beyond the shattered roots, where the crater wall caves away into deeper shadow. The silence there feels expectant, as if something inside has heard the skull leave the mud.
