The split altar heaves apart as red light floods the widening chasm. Stone slabs rise and tumble, while roots writhe upward around a narrow descent opening beneath Teef.
the root-marked orc
Brace yourself, strongest one. The heart is forcing its way up through that throat.
Varka plants her broken spear across the roots and leans her full weight into it. Black veins flare beneath her gray-green skin as the living mass strains against the shaft.
A massive pulse erupts from below. Stone shards whip across the chamber, striking the altar and clattering around Teef's boots as the red glow surges brighter.
the root-marked orc
That passage leads straight toward it. I can hold these roots for moments, not more. Choose your ground before the next pulse.
The narrow descent exhales furnace-hot air carrying the scent of blood and wet earth. Far below, something vast beats once, and the chamber floor cracks toward Teef.

If she reaches the heart, perhaps the Root will finally meet an ending it cannot survive.

Destroy the root-heart
“Teef jumps down to reach the heart itself.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Athletics, rolled +3)
Teef launches into the narrow descent as the chamber floor splits behind her. Falling stone flashes past, but her small, athletic frame twists cleanly through the tumbling debris.
She catches a jutting root, swings beneath a collapsing ledge, and lands hard on a shelf of black stone far below. Furnace heat rolls over her as the heart beats ahead.
The descent opens into a vast subterranean vault. A colossal root-heart hangs suspended in the cavern, red veins pulsing around a bright central knot exposed by the shattered seed.
the root-marked orc
You reached it! The seed's death stripped away its armor. That glowing knot is the heart's true flesh.
Teef's bloodied forearm drips onto the shelf. The heart recoils from each drop, drawing its roots inward and leaving the central knot bare before her.
the root-marked orc
She stands beneath the heart itself, and it fears her blood. The Root has finally found the strength it cannot hide from.
Above, Varka's spear groans against the rising roots. Below, the exposed heart hangs within Teef's reach, its next pulse gathering in the crimson knot.
“Teef bashes the heart repeatedly, without mercy.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -2)
Teef surges across the black stone shelf and brings her warhammer into the exposed crimson knot. The impact booms through the vault, spraying molten sap.
She strikes again, and again, each blow crushing glowing flesh and splitting the heart's surrounding roots. The colossal mass convulses, its red veins collapsing inward.
the root-marked orc
Yes! Break it without mercy, strongest one! Let the Root remember the shape of your hammer!
A desperate root lashes from the heart and wraps Teef's wounded forearm. Its thorns bite through the old cut, tearing it wider before she rips free.
Blood spatters the knot as Teef bashes it repeatedly. The heart's bright core caves beneath the blows, then bursts into ash and dark, steaming fragments.
The suspended root-heart collapses in on itself. Roots shrivel across the vault, the subterranean pulse dies, and the furnace heat gives way to cold stone silence.
the root-marked orc
It is dead. You killed the heart itself, and the Root's hunger has nowhere left to gather.
