Teef's Story - Rootfall’s Breaker, Road Reclaimed

Varka leads Teef deeper into the thornwood while the caravan trader remains behind at the hunting ground. The enormous tracks end at a moss-covered shrine beneath twisted branches.

A toppled stone guardian lies across the shrine steps, its weathered face turned toward the sky. Fresh blood stains the altar, dark against ancient gray carvings.

Varka lifts a torn fragment of red cloth from the altar. A black symbol twists across it like branching roots, but its pattern breaks in unfamiliar angles.

Faint oath marks circle the altar, nearly erased by moss and blood. Beyond the shrine, the trail dwindles among stones, and evening shadows lengthen beneath the thorn canopy.

Varka bends over the altar, tracing the unfamiliar symbol without touching it. The black branches twitch beneath the moss, rearranging themselves into a shape like a closed eye.

The blood on the altar sinks into the carvings. Every oath mark flares crimson, and the toppled guardian grinds across the steps as roots coil beneath its broken body.

Behind Teef, the thornwood seals shut with a cracking wall of black roots. Ahead, fresh tracks rise across the guardian's chest, leading downward into a newly opened darkness beneath the shrine.

Teef points toward the newly opened passage beneath the shrine. Fresh, enormous tracks cross the guardian's chest and descend into the darkness, carrying the killer's trail below.

As Teef steps toward the opening, a thorn-root snaps from the sealed wall behind her and lashes across her forearm, reopening the shallow cut there. Blood falls onto the stone.

The black roots drink the blood with a wet hiss. Below, dim red marks kindle along the stairless tunnel, revealing a descending path and the drag of something heavy.

Teef steps into the opening beneath the shrine, boots striking the descending stone. The red marks brighten around her, and the passage accepts her weight with a deep, grinding groan.

Black roots whip from the walls as she enters. One rakes across her wounded forearm, reopening the cut and drawing a hot line of blood, but she keeps moving into the tunnel.

Behind them, the shrine's roots knot shut with a violent crack, sealing the way back and sending a rolling boom through the thornwood. Dust rains from the ceiling.

Teef and Varka stand fully within the descending passage. Fresh drag marks lead onward through red-lit darkness, while the wounded arm pulses and blood patters behind them.

Teef drives onward through the descending tunnel, boots striking each buried stair. Red marks flare beneath her, guiding her unerringly toward the passage's hidden heart.

The drag marks end at a vast root-lined chamber. A black altar rises from the stone, and a hulking figure kneels before it, wrapped in blood-dark roots.

The kneeling figure lifts its head. Their face is hidden beneath a wooden mask, while black roots pulse from their ribs into the altar and drink from a basin of fresh blood.

The roots withdraw from the stair behind Teef, leaving the chamber open before her. The seed-bearer rises, dragging the altar's roots free with a grinding crack.
