The trail leaves the toppled waystone and climbs into dense thornwood, where blood stains roots and snapped branches point deeper beneath the tangled canopy.

Strips of red cloth hang from the briars, each marked with the black root sigil. They flutter without wind as the caravan trader follows close behind.

Those marks were not on the survivor's clothes when I found him. Someone placed them after the killing.

A heavy impact rolls through the thornwood ahead. Birds burst from the canopy, and loose stones tremble beneath Teef's boots before silence returns.

That was no wounded beast. Something large is moving, and it knows this trail leads us toward it.

The path steepens between hooked branches. More blood darkens the leaves, while fresh red strips guide the ascent like deliberate invitations.

Beyond the briars, the thornwood opens into a crude hunting ground: trampled earth, sharpened stakes, and a broad muddy clearing waiting beneath the gray sky.

I'm surprised you're still here. You should probably head back before things get really dangerous.

The caravan trader looks from Teef to the stakes and blood-dark clearing. His bravado drains away, leaving only a tight grip on his saffron cloak.

You are right, champion. I can carry warnings farther than I can carry a blade.

He backs down the thornwood path, keeping the red sigilmed strips in sight until the briars swallow him. His hurried footsteps fade toward the river.

If you survive this ground, find me at Ashroot Waystation. I will tell every caravan what you faced here.

The clearing falls silent again. Stakes lean inward around churned mud, and something heavy has dragged fresh furrows across the far side.

The trader is safely headed back.

“"Alright, whatever you are, come out and show yourself! I'm itching for a fight!"”

Alright, whatever you are, come out and show yourself! I'm itching for a fight!

Her challenge cracks across the clearing. The red sigils flare along the hanging cloth, and the sharpened stakes shudder as something rises beyond them.

A towering young adult orc woman steps from the thornwood, broad-shouldered and mud-streaked, with braided black hair, gray-green skin, and a broken iron collar around her neck. Red root-marked cloth wraps her arms and waist; one tusk is capped in bone.

There. The little gladiator calls, and the thorn answers. I am Varka, last hunter of the Black Root.

Varka plants a hooked spear in the mud and tears down the nearest sigil cloth. Beneath it, the clearing reveals a ring of old bones and deep claw gouges.

You broke the heart beneath Rootfall. You carry its ending in your blood. Prove that ending was strength, not luck.

She steps inside the bone ring, shoulders squared, spear lowered toward Teef. The thornwood closes behind her, leaving the challenger and the champion alone beneath the gray sky.

“"If it's strength you want, it's strength you're getting. I'm the strongest!" Teef lunges, swinging her hammer at Varka.”

If it's strength you want, it's strength you're getting. I'm the strongest!

Teef lunges across the bone ring, hammer sweeping upward with brutal force. Mud bursts beneath her boots as the blow drives straight for Varka's guarded chest.

The hammer crashes into Varka's spear haft and smashes through her guard, hurling the towering orc woman backward across the trampled earth. Bone stakes snap beneath her heels.

Hah! No luck in that strike. You hit like the root-heart's judgment.

Varka rolls once, rises with blood at her lip, and grips the broken spear in both hands. The red sigils flare brighter, answering the violence with a deep thrum beneath the clearing.

Then hear the truth, strongest one. The Black Root did not die at Rootfall. Its last seed was planted in the hunter who killed the survivor.

She points the jagged spearhead toward the thornwood beyond the stakes, where a fresh trail of blood disappears beneath the roots. Her grin shows the capped tusk.

“"So you're not the one who did him in, huh?" Teef swings again.”

So you're not the one who did him in, huh?

Teef swings again before Varka can raise the broken spear. The warhammer slams into the orc's ribs, folding her around the impact and driving her through the bone ring.

Varka crashes into the mud, scattering old bones and tearing the red-marked cloth from its stake. The sigils flare once, then gutter beneath the force of the blow.

No. I found him dying, and I marked the trail so the killer would come hunting me.

Varka coughs blood, but keeps hold of the jagged spear. She points past Teef toward the deepest thornwood, where enormous tracks press fresh into the mud.

The killer carries the last Black Root seed beneath their flesh. Follow those tracks, and you will find them before moonrise.

The clearing settles around the defeated hunter. Beyond her outstretched spear, the blood trail descends into tangled roots, clear and undisturbed.

“"If you're Black Root yourself, why are you guiding me to take down the seed holder?"”

If you're Black Root yourself, why are you guiding me to take down the seed holder?

Varka wipes blood from her mouth and rises amid the broken bone ring. Her broken spear lowers, not in surrender, but in deliberate acknowledgment.

the root-marked orc

Because Black Root is not one body. It is a hunger wearing many bodies, and the seed holder is its chosen mouth.

She tears open the red cloth around her forearm, revealing black veins branching beneath gray-green skin. The marks pulse faintly, answering the buried roots.

the root-marked orc

The seed entered me years ago. I learned to leash its whispers, but the holder you seek has fed it blood. Soon it will root through them completely.

the root-marked orc

the root-marked orc

I guide you because your hammer broke Rootfall's heart, and your blood carries its ending. Kill the holder, and the seed dies before it finds another host.

Varka turns toward the descending trail and plants the jagged spear like a walking staff. The enormous tracks are fresh, and she leads Teef directly into the thornwood.
