Dale descends with the Greywatch veteran, the cloaked figure, and the wounded keeper close behind. The three prisoners remain in the gallery, guarded by the veteran’s two soldiers.

The maintenance steps open into a round control chamber. Ancient bronze levers ring a dry basin, while pale symbols pulse across the walls like buried stars.

At the basin’s center stands a tall figure formed from black water and bound iron, its featureless head turned toward the glowing lower seal.

The Cloaked Figure

The Cloaked Figure

That is the lower warden. The captors awakened it with the seal, then ordered it to close every refuge passage.

And now it directs the defenses. Can it be commanded to release the prisoners and open the way out?

The Wounded Keeper

The Wounded Keeper

Not by a spoken order. It obeys the seal’s bearer, but the bearer must choose which command the old works recognize.

The warden raises one iron-bound arm. Above the basin, three symbols ignite: a barred gate, a descending stair, and a broken crown. The chamber waits for Dale’s next move.

What does the broken crown symbol command?

The Cloaked Figure

The Cloaked Figure

It means dominion over the old works. The captors used it to make the warden obey them, but I do not know its deeper law.

The explanation falters. As the cloaked figure gestures toward the crown, the symbol flares and the lower seal beneath their glove goes cold. The warden turns away from them.

The Wounded Keeper

The Wounded Keeper

That is no command. It is a claim of ownership, and the old works reject it when its bearer cannot name the rightful charge.

The broken crown dims, leaving a clean mark across the stone. The barred-gate symbol fades next, and the chamber’s bronze levers settle into silence.

Then the refuge is free of their order. We will take the prisoners out, and the captain’s treachery will face Greywatch’s judgment.

The warden lowers its iron-bound arm. A dry stair opens behind the basin, leading upward to the gallery and safety. The cloaked figure kneels beside the abandoned keys, while the veteran gathers the rescued prisoners and keeper for their return.

The black water sank, and the old stair opened beneath the basin. Above, Greywatch gathered the prisoners close.

Easy now. We are going home.

The Cloaked Figure

The Cloaked Figure

The broken crown has no voice here. Its claim ends with the captors.

Then let the living carry the truth out with us.

The cloaked figure knelt beside the abandoned keys, while the veteran led the bound mother and the soldiers toward the waiting light.

Dale Trackfinder left the buried works with the prisoners alive, the wounded keeper guarded, and the captors’ network broken at its root. The crown’s claim remained unanswered, but its ancient defenses had chosen no master, and the road home stood open. Behind them, the lower warden slept beneath the seal, while Greywatch carried the rescued safely into morning.
