The opened stair descends beneath the fallen signal stone. Dale stands at its mouth with four iron-headed arrows in his quiver, still holding the cloaked figure’s wrist.
Below, the companion waits with the two tower guards, two young adult women in dark blue uniforms and iron-braced leather vests, each gripping a short spear. Mara, Tamsin, and the courier cover the entrance behind Dale, while the cloaked figure remains within his grasp.

Her Companion
The watchroom lies beyond the lower landing. Veyr has discovered the hidden stair, and he is issuing orders through the stone.
A muffled boy’s voice rises from somewhere beneath the tower, blurred by masonry. The words are indistinct, but the fear in them carries clearly up the stair.

Her Companion
That is Veyr’s son. He is below us, behind the old holding chamber. Veyr is using his voice to make the guards obey.

Mara Vey
The orders may be forged, but the boy is real. We must separate the command from the hostage before Veyr sends the patrols.
Stone answers with a deep knock beneath their feet. The tower guards tighten their grips, the courier shields her lamp, and every waiting gaze turns toward Dale.

“I descend with the guards toward the holding chamber and the boy.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)
Dale descends first, guiding the two tower guards through the narrow stair. Their spears pass beneath the stonework without striking, and the cloaked figure follows under his firm grip.

Her Companion
Keep left at the landing. The old holding chamber opens below the watchroom, and Veyr cannot see this stair from there.
They reach the lower landing. A barred chamber lies beyond an arched passage, its door open, while a boy’s frightened breathing carries from within. Fresh command-marks glow along the walls.

The Cloaked Figure
The marks are not speaking to the guards. They are carrying Veyr’s voice through the stone, as the relay carried commands before.
One tower guard advances with her spear lowered. Dale leads the group through the open threshold, and the holding chamber reveals a narrow inner cell beneath the signal tower.

Her Companion
There. That is him. The boy is alive, but the inner door is sealed from the watchroom side.
The boy looks toward the armed guards as they enter, then falls silent. Above the inner door, a covered speaking tube pulses with Captain Veyr’s muffled command.
“I order the guards to block the speaking tube”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Dale Trackfinder
Tower guards, block the speaking tube.
Dale’s order cuts through the chamber. The two guards move at once, crossing their spear hafts beneath the pulsing tube and bracing them against the stone.
The Tower Guard
The voice will not pass while we hold it shut.
The command-marks flare along the walls, but the tube’s pulse breaks against the barred hafts. Veyr’s words collapse into a muffled vibration and then silence.

Her Companion
Good. Now he cannot use the boy’s voice to turn the guards against us.
The boy’s breathing becomes clearer inside the inner cell. The cloaked figure remains under Dale’s grasp, while the companion steps toward the sealed door and studies its watchroom-side latch.

The Cloaked Figure
The marks are quiet, but the seal still obeys the watchroom. Veyr has lost his voice here, not his hold on the door.
“I ask the cloaked figure to close the sluice”
FAILURE (Great Willpower, rolled -2)

“I ask the cloaked figure to close the sluice”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Dale Trackfinder
Close the sluice.
Dale keeps the cloaked figure’s wrist secured and directs the request toward the old control markings beside the sealed cell door.

The Cloaked Figure
The sluice is beneath the watchroom. I can close it from here, if the command-mark still answers my glove.
The cloaked figure presses the marked glove to a blackened stone sigil. Silver lines kindle beneath the fingers, tracing a narrow path through the wall.

The Cloaked Figure
Sluice, shut. Let the lower channel hold its water and carry no command.
A deep mechanism turns below the tower. The speaking tube goes cold, a hidden flow stops, and the command-marks fade from the chamber walls.

Her Companion
It is closed. Veyr cannot use the lower channel to send another order.

“I open the sealed cell and free Veyr's son”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)
Dale releases the cloaked figure’s wrist only long enough to seize the sealed cell door. He plants both hands beneath the iron latch and drives upward.
The watchroom mechanism groans through the stone. The seal fractures along its silver lines, then gives way as the door swings inward.

The Boy
Please, do not close it again.
Veyr’s son, a slight young boy with tangled brown hair and a gray wool tunic, steps from the inner cell. He shields his eyes from the lamp.

Her Companion
Easy. Your father cannot send commands through this chamber now. You are free to leave.
One tower guard lowers her spear and wraps her cloak around the boy’s shoulders. The other watches the dark passage while the cloaked figure keeps the dead sigil covered.

The Boy
He is still above, in the watchroom. He told me the guards would abandon me if I stopped speaking.
