The Cloaked Figure

Dale follows the clay tube’s hidden channel upward, still holding the cloaked figure’s gloved wrist. Mara and Tamsin climb behind him, while the wardens remain below to guard the prisoners and passage.

The upper storey smells of old plaster and dust. A loosened section of wall reveals a sealed chamber beyond, its door hidden behind cracked masonry and a warped beam.

Tamsin Rook

Tamsin Rook

Fresh dust here. Someone moved inside recently, and they tried to leave no clear track.

Below, the speaking tube carries the warning again, thin and hollow: “Open, bearer of the crown.” A faint scrape answers from behind the sealed chamber.

Mara Vey

The phrase is repeating through the tube, but that scrape is not. Someone is listening, or preparing the seal.

The Cloaked Figure

Do not break the plaster blindly. If the chamber holds another speaking seal, forcing entry may give the voice a new path.

The cloaked figure’s wrist remains beneath Dale’s grip as the chamber gives one final, careful scrape. Dust trickles from the loosened plaster, and silence waits beyond it.

✓ Quest Accepted

Seal the false claim in the upper chamber

“Is someone alive behind the sealed chamber?”

NO (Likely, rolled 88)

The scrape comes once more, then stops. No breath follows it, no shifting weight, and no living warmth disturbs the sealed chamber beyond the plaster.

Tamsin Rook

Tamsin Rook

There is nobody alive in there. The sound was arranged to imitate someone moving behind the wall.

The speaking tube gives a final hollow repetition, its words unchanged and its cadence exact. Dust settles over the warped beam without any answering disturbance.

Then the chamber is not holding a watcher or a captive. It is holding a mechanism, and the voice is meant to make us open it.

The Cloaked Figure

The Cloaked Figure

The warden has left no bearer here. This is only a prepared claim, waiting for someone to give it a doorway.

The discovery leaves the upper storey still and empty of living presence. Below, the prisoners remain guarded, while the sealed chamber offers only its false scrape and repeating command.

“I inspect the speaking tube and chamber seam for a way to seal the claim.”

SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Scrape Behind the Seal

Dale examines the clay tube, then follows its rim to the chamber seam. Fine scoring forms a continuous circle where plaster meets the hidden door.

Dale Trackfinder

The tube and seam share one channel, and the wax is a removable seal, not a lock.

He finds a shallow socket beneath the tube, shaped for the cold iron nails taken from Bellwether’s shrine. A narrow groove runs from it into the seam.

Dale presses the speaking tube’s wax inward, then seats a cold iron nail in the socket and turns it across the groove. The claim’s hidden path closes.

Mara Vey

The channel is sealed. The words cannot cross into the chamber, and the chamber cannot answer the wayhouse below.

The tube releases one stifled fragment, then falls mute. The false scrape does not return, and the broken crown pressed into the wax splits cleanly apart.

The Cloaked Figure

The Cloaked Figure

You denied it a doorway without opening one. Whatever claim waits beyond that seam is shut away from the prisoners.

Dale descends to the courier passage and calls through the retaining wall, keeping his voice controlled so every prisoner and guard can hear.

Greywatch people, listen. The warden is approaching your route. Stay together, keep away from marked stones, and wait for our signal.

His warning carries through the wall and into the wayhouse yard. Voices stir below, then fall quiet as the prisoners gather near their guards.

Understood. They will remain inside the guarded yard and leave nothing scattered for the warden to claim.

Tamsin Rook

Tamsin Rook

They heard you. The resting place is warned before the old road can reach it.

The effort leaves Dale holding his breath too long. For one visible moment his composure falters, and Tamsin notices before he steadies himself.

Your warning reached them, but the warden now knows the passage is occupied. We must move before it tests the wayhouse.
