The party climbs from the holding chamber into the watchroom. Below, the Greywatch veteran continues guiding the prisoners and keeper along the safe branch, while Iven remains with them as guide.
Captain Captain Veyr stands beside the signal table, a gaunt middle-aged man in a weathered blue watch-coat, iron-gray hair, and a scar crossing his narrow chin. His hand grips a ring of keys.
Captain Veyr
Stop there. The boy is free only because I allowed the door opened. Guards, return to your posts and seal the foundation stair.
The two tower guards hesitate. Beneath the table, a broken crown token glows against the dispatch chest, sending a thin command-mark toward their spear hafts.
Her Companion
Do not obey him. Veyr hid the boy below and sent false orders against the prisoners. I carried those orders, and I name the lie.
The Tower Guard
Captain, show us the seal that gave you authority. Not another command through the stone.
Captain Veyr’s fingers tighten around the keys. Behind him, the speaking tube shudders once, and the command-mark brightens, poised to seize the guards before their doubt becomes defiance.
“Is Veyr obeying the broken crown token?”
NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 71)
The broken crown token flares beneath the table, but Captain Captain Veyr does not answer its pull. He tears the chain from his keys and crushes the token under his heel.
Captain Veyr
I used its orders, not its command. It promised my son would live, but I never gave it my will.
The command-mark gutters out. The guards’ spear hafts go still, and the false authority collapses into blackened wax and a hairline crack in the table.
Her Companion
Then the orders came from someone behind the token. Veyr can name every sealed dispatch, every messenger, and the road where they entered Bellwether.
Captain Veyr
The sender used the old signal tower’s dead relay. I kept copies in the chest, because one day I meant to expose whoever held my son.
The dispatch chest opens beneath the tower guard’s spear. Inside lie copied seals, route lists, and a final unbroken token bearing the mark of the hidden relay.
The Tower Guard
The prisoners are safe, the boy is free, and this evidence ends the false watch. We will carry it to Bellwether together.
“Is the hidden relay sender still operating?”
NO (Likely, rolled 77)
The tower guard lifts the unbroken token from the chest. Its surface is cold and dull, and the copied seals beside it crumble when touched, leaving no answering mark in the stone.
Captain Veyr
That is the last one. The dead relay has sent nothing since the crown token broke. Whoever stood behind it cannot issue another order.
The companion compares the route lists with the dispatches, then closes the chest. Every false diversion ends at the same abandoned tower, and no fresh instruction waits beyond it.
Her Companion
The sender is finished, not merely silent. We can carry the proof to Bellwether and name every hand that served the deception.
Captain Veyr
I will answer for my part. My son is safe, the orders are exposed, and no hidden voice remains to command this watch.
Below, the Greywatch veteran’s call announces the prisoners’ arrival at the safe branch. The tower guards gather the chest and guide Veyr’s son toward the stair, while dawn light enters through the signal slits.
The forced diversion network ends beneath the old tower. Its evidence will reach Bellwether, its captives are safe, and the road ahead belongs once more to those who travel it freely.
The unbroken relay token dimmed in the guard’s hand. Around it, copied seals curled into ash, and the watchroom seemed to breathe freely for the first time in years.
Captain Veyr
Take the chest to Bellwether. I will answer for every route, every silence, and every life endangered.
Tower Guard 1
You will answer. But your son walks free, and the road will open under honest watch.
The Boy
Dale... thank you.
Dale Trackfinder
Keep to the road, lad. It belongs to you again.
The guards gathered the evidence chest and led the boy toward the stair, while below, the prisoners found the safe branch and the old diversions fell silent.
Dale Trackfinder and his companion left the watchroom behind as the restored road waited beneath the morning sky. Captain Veyr remained to face judgment, and the guards carried the truth to Bellwether. The network was ended, the road was safe, and the long deception had nowhere left to hide.
