After sufficient rest, Nyxous follows Teral through an upper basalt passage. Vaelith accompanies her, while the nest-keepers remain below with the youngest broods and the quiet ward-trace.

The western ledges begin beyond this bend. I guard these approaches, the vent paths, and the shelves above them. Nothing reaches the broods unseen.

The passage opens onto a high overlook. Warm mineral vents breathe through layered stone, and sheltered nesting shelves curve beneath the overhang, protected from ash-laden winds.

Vaelith

This is the first place Teral wanted you to see. It has room for growing broods, though every entrance must remain watched.

Teral

The western shelf can support another adult and a nest, if its keeper accepts shared watch. The narrow approach is defensible, but supplies must be carried up from below.

Beyond the ledges, a second passage descends toward hidden water and hunting grounds. Teral pauses beside the overlook, leaving Nyxous a clear view of the territory.

I offer no polished promise. Judge the stone, the shelter, and my habits yourself. If you remain, we build something lasting by guarding it together.

“I inspect the western shelf and its narrow approach for a safe home.”

Teral

Nyxous moves along the western shelf, testing each broad ledge with her weight and examining the overhang, vents, and ash-sheltered recesses. The stone is sound, dry, and spacious enough for a nest.

The western shelf has two defensible entrances and enough warmth for eggs.

She follows the narrow approach to its lower turn, tracing sightlines toward the hunting grounds. Any climber must pass beneath the overlook, where a watcher above can see them first.

Teral

Teral

You found the safe lines quickly. The shelf has no hidden cracks, and the approach gives us warning before danger reaches the nest.

A careful inspection reveals a shallow side cleft behind the western shelf, concealed by stone and warmed by a steady mineral breath. It opens toward hidden water without exposing the nest.

Vaelith

That cleft was overlooked by the older maps. It gives you a private resting hollow, and a second route to water if the main passage is watched.

Then the shelf is safer than I claimed. With your strength on the approach and my watch above, this can be a home defended by two keepers.

“I will take the lower approach while Teral watches the overlook.”

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)

The Western Nesting Ledge

Teral

Nyxous descends the lower approach, placing her weight carefully along the narrow turn. From below, the path to hidden water opens clearly, while the western shelf remains visible overhead.

Teral

Teral

I have the overlook. Nothing can cross above without entering my sight, and I will call if the wind carries anything unusual.

Teral takes position on the high shelf, broad wings partly raised against the ash-laden wind. His gaze sweeps the ledges, vents, and approach with patient discipline.

Vaelith

The lower route is sound. From here, you can reach water without exposing the nest, and Teral’s watch covers your return.

Nyxous reaches the lower turn and surveys the full approach from beneath the overlook. Every climber would pass through open sightlines before reaching the shelf.

Teral

Teral

You chose well. I can guard the heights while you command the lower path. Together, we leave no blind entrance to this home.
