Nyxous reaches the Glassroot Monastery’s eastern cloister with Teral beside her and the restrained raven secured beneath one leg. Vaelith and the elderly wyvern remain behind to guard the refuge.

The monastery’s roof has fallen inward, leaving pale daylight across shattered columns and roots that crawl through ancient flagstones. A dark hollow yawns where the living growth has split the floor.

The obsidian necklace warms against Nyxous’s throat. Beneath the exposed soil, pale court sigils glimmer one after another, tracing a circle around the hollow.

The trail ends here. I see no fresh tracks, but the sigils are waking. I will watch the cloister while you decide whether to approach.

Roots twist toward Nyxous without touching her scales. Their bark parts like a speaking mouth, and a faint voice rises from the hollow, layered with the whisper of leaves.

The Root-Heart

The Root-Heart

Blood of the vanished crown, you have come at last. I kept her voice beneath stone, waiting for the heir who could choose what must awaken.

Teral

Teral

The monastery knows her blood and her mother’s absence. I must guard the path, but this choice belongs to Nyxous.

nyxous

nyxous

Root-heart, shield my choices. Let your knowledge guide me, but do not command my will or decide what I must awaken.

Nyxous’s words enter the hollow. The pale sigils flare around her, but the circle closes before her request can settle, pressing against the obsidian anchor and scattering silver sparks.

The Root-Heart

The Root-Heart

I can shield a choice from coercion, heir, but not from consequence. Your request reached the old crown-law, and it demands a name for the danger you fear.

The roots recoil from Nyxous’s throat and gather instead around her foreleg, forming a narrow living glyph. It does not seize her, but it makes the necklace’s warmth painfully clear.

Teral

Teral

It did not take your will. The glyph is a boundary, not a command. If the root-heart can protect one choice, perhaps you can define the danger without accepting its law.

The Root-Heart

The Root-Heart

I cannot shield every path while you name none. Yet I offer one opening: choose what must remain yours, and I will seal that choice against crown, ward, and root.

“I confront the waking court sigils directly”

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Nyxous lowers her head and faces the waking court sigils directly. Her dark wings spread across the cloister stones, shielding Teral and the hollow behind her.

The sigils flare silver and push against her ward-mark. Nyxous holds her ground, directing the pressure into her own obsidian anchor instead of allowing it to reach the refuge.

The crown-law is testing ownership, not protection.

Her horns catch the pale radiance as she meets the circle’s force. One by one, the court sigils crack, their old authority breaking beneath her refusal to yield.

The Root-Heart

The Root-Heart

You have named the danger through action. Crown, ward, and root will not command what remains yours.

The living glyph around Nyxous’s foreleg unfolds into a protective ring, then settles beneath her scales. The court circle opens, revealing a stair of pale roots descending into the monastery.

The Root-Heart

Your will is sealed against coercion. The path below is open, and the first truth waits where your mother hid her voice.
