The pale root stair curls beneath the eastern cloister into a vaulted chamber threaded with glowing roots. Teral follows close behind, while the restrained raven shifts beneath Nyxous’s leg.
At the chamber’s bottom, a sealed stone basin stands encircled by ancient roots. Nyxous’s mother’s blood-sign burns across its lid, answering the obsidian necklace with a deep pulse.
Teral
The walls are listening. I see no movement, but the roots are arranged like wards around the basin.
The glow travels through the chamber in slow waves, illuminating worn carvings of crowned wyverns, hidden sanctuaries, and figures kneeling beneath branching roots.
The Root-Heart
Heir of the vanished crown, the blood-sign knows you. The basin remains sealed because your mother left one truth behind it, and one choice before it.
Teral
Her mother prepared this place for her alone. I can guard the chamber, but I must not turn caution into another command.
The basin’s seal brightens without opening. Beneath Nyxous’s leg, the raven gives a muffled rustle, and the necklace answers again, waiting for her presence to decide what comes next.

SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +2)
nyxous
Root-heart, reveal the condition for transferring the necklace’s essence into me. I need the truth, without surrendering my will.
Nyxous lowers her head over the sealed basin. The obsidian dragon-head pulses against her throat, while pale roots uncurl around the blood-sign without touching her.
The Root-Heart
The essence may enter you only when you freely name the necklace’s purpose, accept its warning without accepting its command, and offer your own blood-sign in answer.
A vein of silver light rises from the basin and forms three clear marks: purpose, consent, and blood. None binds Nyxous, and the basin remains open to refusal.
The Root-Heart
Your mother’s method requires the necklace to rest against your heart while the living root draws out its essence. You must remain awake and choose the transfer at every breath.
Teral
Then the rite can preserve your protection without making your body another prison. I will guard the chamber, but I will not speak the choice for you.

“I begin the essence transfer, choosing each breath”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)
Nyxous lowers the obsidian dragon-head against her chest and begins the transfer. With each measured breath, she chooses to continue, keeping her will fixed on protection without surrender.
The basin answers. Silver essence rises through the roots, passes from the necklace, and enters Nyxous in steady threads as the three marks shine around her.
The Root-Heart
Purpose is named. Warning is accepted. Command is refused. Your blood-sign answers freely.
At every breath, the living roots pause for Nyxous’s choice. Each time she continues, the obsidian grows lighter, while warmth gathers beneath her heart without constricting breath or thought.
Teral
I see you choosing every breath. I will guard this chamber, and I will not touch you or the rite unless you call.
The final dark glimmer leaves the dragon-head and settles within Nyxous’s chest. The necklace remains against her scales, now empty of essence but intact, while the new magic answers only her will.
The Root-Heart
The essence transfer is complete. Your warning lives within you, your choices remain your own, and no crown-law may command what you have claimed.
