Restraint and the Weight of Order

The ceiling groans overhead as dust pours through widening cracks. Ares still has one hand on the lever, the bronze charm burning cold in his grip. Sisyphus staggers back, eyes darting for another way to cheat the moment.

Hades steps into the falling haze, armor bright with chipped stone. Thanatos moves beside him, calm as a grave bell, both freed gods now watching the king and the lever with hard, measured focus.

Ares drives the lever down with the bronze charm, and the last violet threads snap loose from the throne dais. The room shudders in answer, cracks racing across the ceiling as Sisyphus loses the protection he has been hiding behind.

The king edges toward the rear of the chamber, hunting for an escape while the palace collapses around him. Hades and Thanatos hold position, ready to move, while Ares stands between Sisyphus and the only safe exit.

Ares glances down to see a faint, glowing sigil etched into the stone beneath his boots, pulsing in sync with the palace's dying heartbeat. It is not a trap to hold him, but a trigger for the entire foundation to vanish into the abyss.

Thanatos attempts to take flight, but the palace's collapsing magical field creates a crushing weight that pins his wings against his back. He remains grounded, unable to reach Ares as the stone beneath the young god gives way.

Hades slams his staff into the shifting floor, and the violet energy binding Thanatos shudders under the sudden surge of his authority. The King of the Underworld locks eyes with Ares, his expression a mask of focused resolve as he channels his power to stabilize the crumbling foundation.

Ares drives his hand down into the glowing sigil and tears it free. The violet lines recoil at once, their grip on the floor breaking in a sharp, visible snap.

The stone steadies under his feet. Golden light from Hades swells across the cracked tiles, and the collapse loses its bite.

Sisyphus stumbles as the trap misfires, his confidence slipping into raw panic.

Thanatos surges against the fading force holding him back, wings freeing as the last violet bind dissolves.

Sisyphus backs toward the broken edge, trapped between the gods and the widening drop.

Ares rises into the open space between the fractured edge and the king, catching Sisyphus off balance before he can bolt. Hades keeps the floor singing with gold, and Thanatos closes in from the other side, calm and relentless.

Sisyphus throws up his hands, but there is no room left for bargaining. Ares drives him back with one hard press of force, and the mortal king crashes to his knees on the stable stone.

Thanatos hooks an arm around Sisyphus's shoulders and pins him in place while Hades lowers his staff, the golden light holding the chamber together around them.

The king's struggle drains out of him. His wrists go slack, his breath comes thin, and his eyes dart once toward the broken floor before fixing on Ares in defeat.

The words land cleanly. Sisyphus flinches, and even bound as he is, the king looks smaller under the weight of them.

Thanatos keeps his arm locked around Sisyphus, but his voice stays even. Hades watches Ares closely, pride softening the hard line of his mouth.

The defeated king swallows hard, then lowers his gaze. The chamber is quiet except for the faint, steady pulse of the palace below the floor.

The hush breaks on a sound from below, not a crack this time, but a measured knock from deep under the floor. The golden light in the cracks tightens, and the palace seems to listen.

Hades turns his head toward the sound, brows drawing together. For the first time, concern edges through his calm. Thanatos loosens his grip on Sisyphus just enough to glance downward.

The floor sigils around the broken center flare once, then answer with a second pulse from beneath, older and colder than the first. Sisyphus lifts his chin a fraction, and his smile returns in a thin, ruined line.

The floor beneath the throne room shudders, and the rhythmic knocking gives way to the sound of grinding stone as a hidden mechanism engages. A massive, circular section of the foundation begins to rotate, revealing a deep, lightless shaft that extends far below the palace.

Therefore, Ares surges in and locks Sisyphus by the arm while Thanatos clamps down from the other side. The king’s grin snaps into shock as the two gods take him off the edge of the void.

Thereupon, Hades spreads his hand toward the rotating foundation. Black authority presses over the machinery, and the spinning seam groans as it begins to stall.

The floor bucks once, then grinds to a halt with a wet, stone-on-stone shriek. Cold light seals the split, and the shaft below is cut off from view.

Ares holds fast as Thanatos drives Sisyphus down to his knees. Hades keeps the mechanism bound shut, his gaze fixed and proud on Ares for the clean finish.
