Corinth opens before Ares in white glare and sea-salt heat. The gates stand busy, yet the streets feel hushed, as if the city is holding its breath.

Hades waits at the gate, dark and still against the sun. By the spring, a line of citizens stands with downcast eyes, each one uneasy, each one untouched by death.

Hades

Hades

Thanatos is bound somewhere within this city. Until he stirs, the dead cannot be received.

Ares feels it then, the wrongness in the air, a pressure in his chest. Across the square, a servant at the spring sways, pale and unsteady, while no priest, no kin, no god can answer the coming end.

Hades

Hades

If you strike blindly, Sisyphus wins twice. Find Thanatos, and do not let the city become his shield.

The path is plain now. To save the afterlife, Ares must enter Corinth, face Sisyphus, and reach the god of death before the mortal king turns this frozen city into a trap.

Enter Corinth and confront Sisyphus

Has Sisyphus laid any traps for me and Hades?

YES, AND MORE (VeryLikely, rolled 6)

Ares scans the cobblestones, his eyes catching the faint, shimmering distortion of a hidden ward woven into the very mortar of the gatehouse.

Ares

Ares

The air here is not just stagnant, it is coiled.

Hades

Hades

Do not step forward, Ares. The king has not merely locked the gates, he has turned the entire threshold into a snare designed to bind a god.

Is Eris still meddling nearby?

YES (Likely, rolled 48)

Ares glances toward the shadows of a nearby archway, where a flicker of discordant, violet light dances against the stone.

Eris

Eris

Patience is such a dull color on you, little god. I thought you might prefer to see how quickly this trap unravels if you simply kicked it down.

Ares

Ares

She is watching, waiting for me to break the order Hades has built.

I ask Hades how to break the ward

Ares

How do I break the ward?

Hades

Hades

Do not strike the gate itself. The trap is keyed to the threshold, not the stone. Follow the gold lines, find their hinge, and sever the seam where the pulse returns to the arch.

Hades lays two fingers against the dusty ground, and the faint geometric lines flare in answer. The ward answers him with a sharp violet throb, and the dust trembles at Ares's boots.

Ares feels the cost at once. The pulse scrapes across his divine senses like cold iron, leaving a sting behind his eyes.

Eris

Eris

There. He understands now. I do love a clever little lock.

A shiver runs through the gatehouse, and one of the silent servants at the edge of the square stumbles, catching itself on the wall as the violet light intensifies.

“How did a mortal manage to kidnap a god in the first place, let alone the god of death?”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Reasoning, rolled +1)

Ares

How could a mortal take Thanatos in the first place, let alone the god of death?

Hades

Hades

By making the world agree to a lie. Sisyphus did not wrestle Thanatos down, he lured him into a moment where death could not be trusted.

Hades

Hades

A clever mortal does not need strength against a god. He needs timing, a hook, and a place where order is already fraying.

Hades lifts his hand from the dust. The gold threads along the threshold tremble, then settle, as if listening for the next wrong step.

Eris

Eris

A game, really. Sisyphus always prefers a board he can tilt before anyone notices.

The violet pulse ripples through the archway again, and the servant in the square goes still, blinking as if something inside the city has just been denied its ending.

Hades

Hades

That is why I warned you, Ares. In Corinth, even a breath can be used against you. Watch the seam, not the bait.

I inspect the ward seam for its weak point

Ares studies the gold seam where the dust has thinned, and the ward answers with a faint, living tremor. The line is not strongest at the center. It buckles where two old bindings cross, like a knot pulled too tight.

Ares

Ares

The weak point sits off the main seam, where the pattern doubles back.

He shifts his gaze along the threshold, and the violet wash peels back for a breath. Beneath it, the gatehouse stone shows a tiny break in the wardwork, half-hidden under ash and salt.

Hades

Hades

There. You see it now. Do not strike the bright line, Ares, strike the flaw that holds it together.

Eris

Eris

Mm. Clever enough to hide a trap in plain sight, clever enough to expect a war god to hit it.

The servant in the square sways again, then stiffens, as if the city itself has caught its breath and will not let it go. The gold seam flickers, briefly open to view, then seals over the break.

Ares has the weak point in sight, and the ward shivers as if waiting for his next move.

I strike the ward’s hidden flaw while Hades shields the servant.

SUCCESS (Great Melee Combat, rolled -1)

Ares drives his weapon into the hidden flaw. The ward snaps bright, then buckles inward with a crack of gold and violet. The seam does not hold.

Hades moves at once, stepping into the servant's line and drawing the figure back from the threshold as the pulse dies at his feet. The servant sags, suddenly free to breathe.

Hades

Hades

Good. Keep your eye on the break, not the shine.

The gatehouse stones answer with a deeper groan. Dust spills from the arch, and the gold seam opens wider than before, no longer a line but a wound in the wardwork.

Eris

Eris

There it is. He likes games, but he never likes when someone else changes the rules.

Beyond the crack, the threshold no longer hums shut. A passage stands open into Corinth, and the city’s stillness presses out like held breath.
