Inside the dim shed, the captive remains against the post while Makeda stands near the open door. Sofia watches the farmhouse through weeds, and Daria guards the threshold with the sickle.

The Captive

The Captive

My name is Petar. I was walking from the coast toward the village when the farmer's sons seized me. They said I had stolen bread, though I carried only what I bought.

The Captive

The Captive

They chained me here yesterday. The farmer keeps his family in the house, with a second shed near the orchard. His sons work the hempfield and return by the western path.

His voice cracks from thirst. The survivors' water remains with the bundles beyond the fence, while Petar's bound hands tremble against the timber.

The Captive

The Captive

The eastern track reaches the village road, but it is watched when the hemp is carried out. Follow the stream west instead, and you can reach the coast below the cliffs.

Daria

Daria

How many men in the village, and which path leads away from the Turkish road? Speak plainly. We have little time.

The Captive

The Captive

Perhaps thirty houses, mostly farmers. The coast path bends around a wooded ravine. No guard post there, unless soldiers have come since yesterday.

✓ Quest Accepted

Bring Petar safely to the survivors

“"Back to the stream. It is the only safe way to leave this place. And take some hemp with you." She scans the shed for anything useful before she goes.”

Back to the stream. It is the only safe way to leave this place. Take some hemp with you.

Makeda scans the shed before leaving. Beneath a pile of empty sacks she finds a clay water jug, a short coil of cord, and a blunt knife, all dusty but serviceable.

Petar

Petar

The jug may still hold a little water. Take it. The cord can bind the hemp into a bundle.

Makeda gives the jug to Petar, then gathers several dry hemp stalks from beside the wall. She binds them tightly with the cord, leaving the remaining bundles undisturbed.

Daria

Daria

The western path remains clear. I will lead us back through the field, and Sofia can watch the house.

Daria keeps the sickle low as they slip from the shed. Sofia signals from the orchard, and the group crosses behind the hemp stacks without disturbing the fresh footprints.

They reach the stream and follow its westward bank beneath the trees. The hemp bundle, jug, cord, and knife join their salvaged supplies as the farm disappears behind them.

I am from the coast, not Russia. I will come with you. The farmer's sons will not forgive me, and I have nowhere else to go.

Petar lowers the jug, breathing more steadily. Makeda refills it and ties it shut with the spare cord while Daria studies the streambank.

Daria

Then keep close and make no noise. The ravine lies west, and from there we can reach the coast without returning to the farm.

Sofia takes Petar's arm as they move off, while Angela and Julia gather the hemp bundle and knife. The group follows the stream beneath the trees, leaving the farm behind.

Keep beneath the trees. The farm is behind us, and the ravine will hide us from anyone using the road.

Julia gathers her skirts clear of the reeds while Angela keeps the hemp bundle tight. The stream bends west, narrowing between dark roots and mossy stones.

Petar

The ravine is ahead. Once we reach it, the coast path will be hidden below the cliffs.

Daria leads them into the wooded ravine without hesitation. Steep banks rise on either side, screening the group from the farm and the village road.

Sofia

We are concealed now. Petar can rest briefly, and we can fill the jug again before going on.

The survivors settle beneath overhanging branches beside the stream. Behind them, the ravine closes over their tracks, and ahead, a pale strip of coast shows through the trees.

“Having put some distance between themselves and the farm, she pauses for a bit of conversation. "Give him something to eat. Are you Orthodox, Petar? You have a Slavic name."”

Angela opens the cloth bundle and hands Petar a piece of bread and salted meat. He accepts them with both hands, eating slowly beneath the branches.

Petar

Petar

Yes. I am Orthodox, from a village near the coast. My mother taught me the prayers, though hunger has made me forget some of them.

Petar pauses to drink from the clay jug, then lowers it carefully. The stream murmurs beside them, while Daria watches the ravine mouth and Sofia studies the trees.

Petar

Petar

My name is Slavic because my people are Slavic. The Turks rule our coast, but they have not made us Turkish.

Daria

Daria

Keep your voice low. Faith may bind us together, but it will not stop a patrol from hearing us.

Petar nods and folds the remaining bread inside his torn tunic. Strength returns to his face as the group rests briefly beside the hidden stream.

“"Daria is also Orthodox. Sofia too, I presume. Do you want to go home, Petar? You can't stay here."”

SUCCESS (Great Oratory, rolled +2)

Makeda

Makeda

Daria is Orthodox, and I presume Sofia is as well. Do you want to go home, Petar? You cannot stay here.

Makeda speaks quietly beside the stream. Petar holds the folded bread against his chest while the others listen beneath the concealing branches.

Petar

Petar

Yes. I want to go home, though my village may no longer be safe for me. I cannot return while the farmer's sons remember me.

Sofia

Sofia

I am Orthodox. My home is far away, but I understand wanting to see it again.

Daria

Daria

I am Orthodox too. Petar should come with us until the coast offers him a safer road.

Petar nods, accepting the truth of his situation. He rises carefully, steadies himself against the bank, and returns the jug to Angela.

Petar

Petar

Then I will go with you. When we reach a place where I can travel safely, I will find my way home.

“"We are going east. You can come if you want. But following the coast to the east brings us directly to Samsun and the Janissaries. Can you suggest a better route?"”

SUCCESS (Great Oratory, rolled -1)

Makeda

Makeda

We are going east. You can come if you want. But the coast leads straight to Samsun and the Janissaries. Can you suggest a safer route?

Petar

Petar

Yes. Do not follow the shore. From this ravine, take the stream inland, then turn east through the wooded hills. Old charcoal-burners' tracks cross there.

Petar points beyond the ravine mouth, where the stream climbs between dark ridges. His hand steadies as he traces the hidden route through the trees.

Petar

Petar

After two days, the tracks descend toward the coast again, east of the roads serving Samsun. Avoid every village, and cross the main road only at night.

Daria

Daria

That is better than the coast. Hills slow us, but they hide us. We can follow game trails when the charcoal tracks become used.

Sofia looks toward the rising stream while Angela tightens the bundle of hemp. Julia folds the remaining bread beneath her cloak, preparing for a longer passage.

Petar

Petar

There is a spring near the highest ridge. Beyond it, keep east until you find a shepherd's path. I can guide you that far.

Makeda leads them from the ravine, following Petar's directions as the stream climbs inland. Daria takes the rear, while Sofia steadies Petar over the slick stones.

Petar

Petar

Keep left here. The old charcoal track begins beyond those beeches, where the ground rises sharply.

They reach the wooded hills and leave the stream behind. The track winds beneath beeches and firs, hidden from the coast and the roads below.

A branch catches the hemp bundle as Angela passes. The cord snaps, spilling several stalks downslope, and the group must abandon them rather than make noise recovering them.

Daria

Daria

Leave them. We still have enough, and silence is worth more than a few stalks.

Makeda presses onward with the survivors behind her. By midday, the ravine lies out of sight, and the hidden charcoal track carries them east beneath the hills.

“"Go ahead, I will catch up with you when I have gathered up these stalks. They would reveal our path to any pursuer."”

Make it quick, but keep quiet. We will follow the track until the next bend and wait there.

Daria moves on with Sofia, Angela, Julia, and Petar. Their footsteps fade beneath the beeches, leaving Makeda alone beside the scattered hemp.

Makeda crouches on the slope and gathers the stalks one by one, lifting them from leaves and mud without snapping the brittle fibers. The track remains undisturbed.

Petar

Petar

The bend is close. We can wait beneath the firs, but do not call out. Anyone below might hear us.

Makeda binds the recovered stalks against her remaining bundle, then brushes loose leaves over the flattened patch where they spilled. No pale stalks remain to mark the trail.

She climbs after the others, carrying the gathered hemp. Ahead, the group waits in shadow at the bend, and the charcoal track continues east through the hills.

“"Wait here a moment and be quiet. I'm going to do a bit of scouting." Taking advantage of the terrain, she takes a stealthy look at whatever is around the bend.”

Makeda leaves the hemp beneath the firs and slips along the charcoal track, using roots and shadow for cover. She reaches the bend without disturbing a leaf.

Beyond it, the track descends into a narrow hollow. Cold smoke stains the air from an abandoned charcoal pit, but no voices, tools, or fresh footprints mark the ground.

Makeda

Makeda

The track is clear, and no one is watching it.

Farther east, two old paths divide around the hollow. The northern one climbs through dense firs; the southern track follows the ridge toward a distant shepherd's shelter, empty and weathered.

Daria

Daria

Makeda?

Her name comes softly from behind the bend. Makeda returns through the cover with the route surveyed, and the waiting group remains concealed beneath the trees.

“"Charcoal burners have been working here, but there's no one here now. We can either go to the north, through the firs, or to the south along the ridge, where there's an old shepherd's shelter. What do you think, Petar?"”

The charcoal burners have left. North leads through the firs; south follows the ridge to an old shepherd's shelter. Petar, which route do you recommend?

The group gathers beneath the firs at the fork. The northern path disappears into dense trees, while the southern track climbs toward the roofless shelter on the ridge.

Petar

Petar

South. The shelter gives us cover, and shepherds may have left water or a little wood. From the ridge, we can see anyone approaching.

Petar points along the worn southern track, keeping his voice low. The distant shelter stands against the gray sky, weathered but intact enough to offer concealment.

Daria

Daria

A clear view is useful, but so is caution. We approach from below, search the shelter, and leave at once if we find fresh signs.

Sofia

Sofia

The ridge may also lead us toward another track east. I would rather inspect the shelter than vanish into those thick firs.

The survivors turn south, leaving the hemp beneath the firs only long enough to retrieve it. Daria takes the rear as Petar leads them quietly up the ridge.

“"We are agreed then to inspect the shelter, so we should do that first, and then decide what comes next."”

We inspect the shelter first, then decide what comes next.

Makeda leads them beneath the ridge, approaching from below as Daria advised. The roofless shelter is empty, its stone walls broken but still useful cover.

She searches the floor, hearth, and collapsed rear wall. Beneath rotten brush, she finds a clay water jar with a little rainwater, dry kindling, and a folded scrap of coarse cloth.

Petar

Petar

The jar is sound. We can fill it at the spring, and the shelter will hide us while we rest.

As Makeda lifts the jar, a loose stone falls from the wall and cracks against the hearth. The sharp report rolls across the ridge, and dust scatters over her bandaged hand.

Daria

Daria

That was louder than I like. No voices answer, but we must leave no sign that we stayed here.

The shelter yields cover, water storage, kindling, and cloth, but the fallen stone has spent their quiet. Daria watches the western slope while the others prepare to move east.

“"We're rather exposed here. We'll have to keep watch, if we stay. We could use the pause to make those sandals I told you about. I can show you how."”

We are too exposed here. If we pause, we keep watch. We can use the time to make sandals, and I can show you how.

Makeda spreads the coarse cloth beside the shelter wall and selects pliable hemp fibers from the bundle. Daria takes the western slope while Sofia watches the eastern ridge.

Daria

Daria

A short pause is acceptable, provided the watches do not lapse. I will call out at the first sign of movement.

Makeda cuts the cloth into broad soles, folds the edges, and threads hemp cord through them. She demonstrates the crossings, then guides Angela and Sofia through the work.

Angela

Angela

The pattern is simple enough. These will hold better than bare feet, and the spare cord can mend them on the road.

By the time Daria signals a clear ridge, four rough pairs of sandals lie ready. Julia ties hers securely while Petar fills the jar at the spring, and the group prepares to move east.

The survivors gather every hemp fiber, cloth trimming, ember, and footprint. Makeda scatters fresh needles over the disturbed earth, replaces fallen stones, and carries the scraps downhill to bury them beneath wet leaves.

Daria

Daria

No trail remains from the shelter. Even the spring path is broken where we crossed.

Angela smooths the hearth while Sofia restores the brush along the wall. Julia removes the last strand of cord from a thorn and presses the plant back into place.

Petar

Petar

There is something else. From the ridge, I saw smoke far east, beyond the firs. It may be another charcoal camp, and its track leads toward the shepherd's path.

When they finish, the shelter looks abandoned and weathered, its rainwater jar gone but every sign of recent occupation erased. The group takes the sandals, supplies, and jar, then leaves east beneath the ridge.

Very well. Keep close, and step where I step. We move east until the ground tells us otherwise.

Daria takes the front beneath the ridge, guiding them toward the distant smoke. The track soon divides among wet fir roots, and both branches bear old charcoal marks.

Daria

Daria

Stop. I cannot tell which branch leads to the shepherd's path. The northern track is hidden, but the southern one shows recent passage.

Petar

Petar

Recent passage means danger, or simply charcoal burners. I have seen this country, but not from this ridge. We should not follow blindly.

Daria lowers her hand, and the group halts before the fork. Her leadership has exposed uncertainty instead of resolving it, leaving the eastward route temporarily closed.

Daria

Daria

I can lead us through ground I know, not guess at a hidden track. We must inspect both branches from here before choosing.

“"Wait here. I'll have a look at the northern track."”

SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -2)

Makeda

Makeda

Wait here. I’ll have a look at the northern track.

Makeda leaves the fork and climbs onto the northern track, placing each foot on roots and stones. Dense firs conceal her from the others and from the eastern ridge.

The path bends through a shallow hollow, then joins a narrower trail marked by charcoal splinters and old hoofprints. Beyond it, the ground descends toward the shepherd’s route.

As Makeda crosses the hollow, a rotten branch breaks beneath her sandal with a sharp crack. Birds burst from the firs, and the sound carries back toward the waiting group.

The northern track reaches the shepherd's path, but it is not empty.
