The footpath rises from the hollow toward a roofless roadside chapel hidden behind firs. A weathered cross leans above a dry stone recess, its stones dark with age.

Inside lie old straw, a cracked icon, and a shallow bed of recent ash where someone cooked a small meal. Rain has not reached it.

Petar

Petar

Someone used this place after the rain began. The eastern route is not as empty as we hoped.

Petar crouches near the ash without touching it, studying the chapel entrance and the fir branches beyond. Daria keeps Julia sheltered while Sofia examines the uneven floor.

Daria

Daria

No fire, no voices, no fresh tracks that I can see. It may still serve, but only briefly.

Sofia

Sofia

Julia can rest here. The straw is dry enough, and the walls hide us from the path.

Angela sets the jug beside the cracked icon and checks the food bundles. Beyond the chapel, the footpath continues east between fir trunks, while the fresh ash offers no answer about who passed.

✓ Quest Accepted

Determine who used the roadside chapel

“"Smugglers perhaps, or a lone hunter. No soldiers, because there is no sign of horses. Take a rest while Daria and I look around."”

The group settles beneath the chapel walls. Julia keeps her ankle raised, Angela guards the provisions, and Sofia distributes the remaining water in careful sips.

Makeda

Makeda

No hoofprints mark the ash, but the shelter was used recently.

Makeda and Daria circle the chapel through wet firs, searching for tracks, dropped gear, or any sign of a mounted patrol. The ground offers only broken needles and stone.

Daria

Daria

Smugglers or a hunter, perhaps. Whoever came here carried no horse this way.

Makeda climbs onto the low rear wall for a better view. A loosened stone shifts beneath her, and the old masonry slumps inward with a muffled crash, spilling rubble across the chapel threshold.

Daria

Daria

Down. The entrance is blocked, and that fall has made our hiding place worse, not safer.

Dust settles over the ash and straw. The group remains unseen, but the chapel now has one cramped exit, while the collapse has erased whatever faint tracks the search might have revealed.

“"This place offers no shelter. Whoever was here has moved on, and I don't think we will overtake him. Let's just keep going."”

This place offers no shelter. Whoever was here has moved on, and I do not think we will overtake him. Let us keep going.

Daria accepts the decision with a brief nod. The fugitives gather their bundles, lift Julia carefully, and file through the chapel’s remaining passage into the wet firs.

Daria

Daria

Keep the line tight. We follow the eastern path until we find better cover, and we leave nothing behind.

Angela secures the jug beneath her cloak while Sofia supports Julia’s good side. Petar takes the lead, testing each slick stone before the others follow.

Petar

Petar

The trail continues east. Whoever used the chapel went ahead, but I see no sign that he waits for us.

The group descends beyond the chapel, where fir branches close over the path and soften their passage. The collapsed shelter disappears behind them without a fire or footprint left to betray them.

Julia

Julia

Then let us spend our strength on the road, not on a ruin.

“They keep going.”

The fugitives continue east beneath the firs, keeping the path’s shallow descent and leaving the ruined chapel behind. Wet branches conceal them from the mule road.

Petar

The stones are firmer ahead. Stay close, and place your feet where mine have been.

Petar leads around slick roots while Daria closes the line. Angela keeps the jug beneath her cloak, and Sofia supports Julia through the uneven ground.

Julia

Julia

I can walk. Let us not waste the daylight, but we should rest before the next climb.

The path bends east into thicker woodland and reaches a shallow, sheltered hollow beneath leaning firs. A dry bank offers room for the group to sit unseen.

Daria

Daria

Here, briefly. No fire, no noise. We eat sparingly, then continue while the cover remains good.

They settle beneath the roots, preserving their water and provisions. Beyond the hollow, the eastern path remains open, hidden, and ready for their next march.

“"If any of you think Julia is a burden, you are wrong. She is a treasure. She is the daughter of a nobleman, a woman of education, taste and refinement. That may not mean much now, but when we reach civilization, it will mean everything. You see, she is a noble lady in distress. And we are nobodies, just tramps and ragged refugees. But she can walk into the royal court and plead for help, and they will have to give it. That may seem unfair, but it is how the world works."”

SUCCESS (Legendary Oratory, rolled +0)

Makeda

Makeda

If any of you think Julia is a burden, you are wrong. She is a treasure: educated, refined, and the daughter of a nobleman.

Makeda

Makeda

When we reach civilization, she can enter a royal court and plead for our help. They may ignore tramps and refugees, but they cannot so easily ignore a noble lady in distress.

Makeda’s words settle over the hollow with the authority of a measured command. Rain whispers through the firs, and no one interrupts her.

Daria

Daria

You speak plainly, and you speak wisely. I know little of courts, but I know that a name can open doors a hungry stranger cannot touch.

Julia

Julia

You give me more credit than I deserve, Makeda. Still, if my family’s name can purchase safety for all of us, I will use it.

Angela

Angela

Then Julia is not merely another mouth to feed. She is our letter of introduction, if we can keep her safe until someone important reads it.

The group’s mood steadies. Sofia adjusts Julia’s ankle binding, Petar watches the eastern path, and the fugitives share their scant food without resentment before preparing to move.

“"Exactly. We will look after her now, and she will look after us later."”

SUCCESS (Legendary Oratory, rolled -1)

Makeda

Makeda

Exactly. We will look after Julia now, and she will look after us later.

Makeda’s words turn their hardship into an agreement. Beneath the fir roots, the women listen while rain threads softly through the branches.

Julia

Julia

Then I accept the duty as well as the protection. When we reach safety, I will speak for every one of you.

Daria

Daria

Good. We carry her without shame, and she carries our case when words matter more than weapons.

Sofia retightens Julia’s ankle binding and divides the remaining food into smaller portions. Angela checks the jug, while Petar studies the eastern path beyond the hollow.

Angela

Angela

Then we preserve her strength carefully. A noble name is useless if its bearer cannot stand before the people who might help us.

Julia

Julia

They trust me with their future. I must be ready when that future reaches a door.

It is time to go.

Makeda rises, securing the cloth around her cut palm before lifting her bundle. She slips from beneath the fir roots without disturbing the dry bank or scattering the provisions.

Then we move. Keep the line tight, and leave no sign that we rested here.

Daria gathers the last crumbs and smooths the disturbed earth. Sofia helps Julia stand, while Angela settles the jug beneath her cloak and Petar scouts the bend.

Julia

Julia

I am ready. Let us keep east while the path remains hidden.

Makeda leads them out through the leaning firs, placing each foot on firm stones and guiding the others around the wettest roots. The hollow vanishes behind them.

Petar

Petar

The eastern path is clear. It descends briefly, then rises beyond the trees.

Makeda slips ahead beneath the firs, keeping her bandaged palm protected as she circles the rising path. From the trees, she studies every bend, hollow, and exposed shoulder.

The path is clear of people, fresh hoofprints, and disturbed earth. Beyond the next rise, it divides: the eastern track continues openly, while a narrower footpath follows a wooded ravine.

Makeda traces the ravine route far enough to confirm continuous cover and finds a shallow spring under a shelf of stone, its water clear and untouched.

Near the spring, she also spots a dry recess containing old cut fir poles and a length of usable bark cord, abandoned but sheltered from the rain.

She returns without crossing the open ground and signals the others from behind the trees. The ravine offers concealment, water, and a place to rest before the next climb.

Daria

Daria

Good scouting. We take the ravine, refill quietly, and use the dry recess if Julia needs rest.

Petar leads toward the hidden turn while Sofia supports Julia and Angela secures the jug. The group leaves the exposed path unseen, with Makeda guiding them toward the spring.

“They keep going.”

Makeda leads them into the wooded ravine, keeping her bandaged palm close while the others follow beneath fir branches. The open track disappears behind them.

The path narrows beside the spring shelf. Makeda steps across wet stones, but her foot slips; she catches herself against the rock and scrapes her knee through her clothing.

Daria

Daria

Slowly. A stumble makes noise, and noise carries farther than we do.

Makeda reaches the dry recess and clears the approach, finding the old fir poles and bark cord still usable. The group enters the shelter unseen.

Sofia

Sofia

Julia can rest here. The ground is dry, and the spring is close enough that we need not risk the road.

Angela fills the jug while Petar watches the ravine mouth. Daria gathers the soundest pole, and Sofia settles Julia against the stone shelf.

Petar

Petar

No one followed us. From here, the ravine continues east under cover.

SUCCESS (Legendary Oratory, rolled -1)

Makeda

Makeda

Should we stay for the night? I do not think we will find a better place soon.

The question settles over the recess. Water murmurs beside the stones, the fir branches hide the entrance, and the ravine offers dry ground, concealment, and no visible trail toward them.

Daria

Daria

We stay. Julia needs the rest, and this shelter gives us water without exposing the road. We leave before first light.

Petar

Petar

I will watch the ravine mouth until midnight, then wake Daria. No fire, and no one approaches the spring alone.

Angela fills the jug and wedges it beneath her cloak. Sofia arranges dry fir needles beneath Julia, while Daria tests the shelter’s narrow entrance and masks the fresh disturbance.

Julia

Julia

This is better than the chapel. I can preserve my ankle here, and we can begin tomorrow with daylight enough to choose the safer climb.

The fugitives settle into the recess for the night. Petar takes the first watch, and the group keeps its food, water, and route concealed beneath the dripping firs.

Petar keeps his first watch without moving from the shadowed entrance. The jug stays covered, and the food bundles remain tucked beneath cloaks and folded cloth.

Sofia

Sofia

Sleep while you can, Julia. The ankle is less swollen now, and tomorrow will ask enough of you.

Sofia checks the binding by touch, then settles back against the stone. Julia rests with her injured leg raised, breathing evenly as the hours pass.

Daria

The watch changes at midnight. No fire, no voices, and no one leaves the shelter before dawn.

The night passes without alarm. Near midnight, Daria takes Petar’s place at the ravine mouth, while the others sleep undisturbed beneath the dripping firs.
