The shell markers guide Oceania through the submerged tunnel, each Moonwake spiral pale beneath the ash-stained water. Her carved token rests against her scales as her aching back brushes the current.

The passage widens into a sheltered nursery cavern. Curtains of kelp conceal clusters of young reef creatures, while exhausted guardians watch from shadowed shelves, their bodies tense around the nests.

Beneath the cavern floor, a mineral spring glows through cracks in the rock, sending gentle blue warmth into the surrounding water. The ache along Oceania’s back answers its pull.

No guardian approaches. They recognize Moonwake’s markers but keep the kelp curtains between themselves and the stranger, waiting for the warning she carries to become clear.

Far behind, Tala and the Moonwake guardians remain at the lagoon, their route separated by the ash-choked tunnel. Here, only the nursery guardians and the hidden spring receive Oceania.

One elderly reef guardian lifts a shell horn but does not sound it. Her wary gaze fixes on the carved token, then shifts toward the glowing spring and the vulnerable young.

Oceania raises Moonwake’s carved shell above the kelp curtain, its three pale spirals catching the springlight. The motion pulls at her healing back, reopening a tender seam and clouding the water with a faint blue shimmer.

The warning carries through the cavern. Guardians draw closer behind the kelp, still shielding the young, while the elderly guardian lowers her shell horn without sounding it.

Suspicion remains in the guardian’s narrowed eyes, but it now shares space with urgent attention. Several guardians turn toward hidden channels leading deeper into the reef.
