Moonwake Hears the Warning
Tala
Tala

Oceania reaches Moonwake Lagoon through cool, clear water. Her injured back remains tender, and the carved shell rests securely against her deep-sea scales as freshwater springs brighten the shaded basin.

Several reef guardians, young adult merfolk of varied genders with short black hair, lean bare torsos, and shell piercings circle at a cautious distance, sleek finned figures marked with pale bands and pearl-colored eyes. They do not attack; instead, they angle their bodies toward a submerged stone court.

Tala

Tala

Slowly, traveler. Moonwake listens before it trusts. Follow the current into the court, and keep the shell where we can see it.

At the court’s center waits Tala, a middle-aged merfolk woman with a broad, sturdy build, sea-green skin, dark braided hair, and a mantle of layered blue kelp.

A white scar crosses Tala’s left cheek, and polished shell rings line her arms. She watches Oceania’s wounds first, then fixes her gaze on the sanctuary token.

Tala

Tala

That carving belongs to a guarded reef. Its bearer may speak, but warnings carried by strangers often conceal another tide beneath them.

Tala

Tala

Bring the shell closer when you are ready. Tell Moonwake what danger moves beyond your sanctuary, and we will decide whether your news deserves our trust.

Oceania glides into the submerged stone court and brings the carved shell forward, holding its three reef-lines plainly beneath Moonwake’s clear water.

Oceania

Oceania

Hunters came for the young of Blackreef Sanctuary. I sank their ships before they could take them.

The shell’s pale carving catches the lagoon’s light. Around the court, the young adult merfolk guardians shift from wary circles into a silent, attentive formation.

Tala

Tala

You sank ships for a nesting ground, yet you speak of it without asking us to praise you. That sounds like truth, or a practiced shape of it.

Tala

Tala

Blackreef is far from Moonwake, but hunters who seek young creatures rarely stop at one reef. Their reach may already be moving through these waters.

Tala accepts the shell between both hands, inspecting its curling lines and the mineral glow along Oceania’s injured back. The surrounding current settles.

Tala

Tala

Moonwake hears your warning. Stay within the court while we compare it with our own signs, traveler, and we will show you what danger has passed this way.

Oceania

Tell me what danger has passed through these seas.

Oceania’s request moves softly through the clear court. Tala’s expression tightens, and the merfolk guardians turn toward the darker channel beyond Moonwake’s spring-bright waters.

Tala

Tala

Three nights ago, our eastern sentries found ash drifting beneath the surface. Not from a cooking fire, but from burned kelp beds and shattered reef shelters.

Tala lays the shell on the submerged stone and traces a line toward the eastern passage. A faint gray strand still curls through the current, carrying the bitter scent of char.

Tala

Tala

A black-hulled ship passed beyond our outer stones before dawn. Its hunters cast weighted nets into the nursery channels, then withdrew when our warning bells sounded.

Tala

Tala

They did not seek Moonwake alone. Their chart marks showed smaller reefs farther east, and one symbol was shaped like a broken crown. We believe an admiral commands them.

The guardians close ranks around the eastern channel. Tala lifts her scarred face toward Oceania, no longer measuring a stranger, but presenting a danger with a direction.

Oceania

The ships I sank bore that same broken-crown marking on their masts. They may have served the same admiral.

The words pass through the submerged court, and the guardians’ formation tightens. Gray ash drifts between them from the eastern channel, disturbing the clear water.

Tala

Tala

Then the mark is not a warning left by chance. You have seen the admiral’s fleet with your own eyes, and survived its reach.

Tala retrieves the shell and presses its edge into a thin layer of silt on the stone. She draws the broken crown beside the three reef-lines.

Tala

Tala

Our sentries found this shape carved into a piece of black mastwood. The ship withdrew eastward, toward the smaller reefs named on its chart.

Tala

If your knowledge confirms ours, Moonwake will not leave those nurseries unwarned. Tell me where you faced the fleet, and what strength remains to it.

I fought them off the coast of Blackreef. I sank every ship that was there, and swallowed their admiral.

The words settle over the stone court. Gray ash spirals around Oceania’s scars, and the guardians stare toward the eastern channel in grim silence.

Tala

Blackreef. Then the fleet has lost its harbor, its ships, and the admiral who commanded them.

Tala’s fingers tighten around the carved shell. She redraws the broken crown in the silt, then marks several smaller reefs east of Moonwake.

Tala

Tala

You faced their full strength there, and none of those ships remains. But their chart named other reefs, which means their work began before you struck them.

Tala

Tala

Moonwake will send warnings along the eastern chain. Show us the route their chart carried, traveler, and we will decide which nurseries face danger first.

The young adult guardians open a passage toward the eastern channel. Beyond them, ash threads through the water, pointing toward reefs still hidden beyond Moonwake’s clear basin.

“no, i will go warn the other reefs, but before i go, do you know of any males that are like me?”

SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled +2)

Oceania

Oceania

I will warn the other reefs. Before I go, do you know of any males like me, who can live in both sea and shore?

Oceania’s question passes through the stone court. Tala studies her deep-sea scales, four wings, horns, and glowing lines while the guardians hold the eastern passage open.

Tala

Tala

Moonwake knows of one. His name is Vaelor, a male ampithere who keeps to the wind-carved cliffs of Dawnspine Reef.

Tala

Tala

He dives through the deep channels and rests on the sunlit rocks without his scales failing. He is solitary, wary, and not easily approached, but he is alive.

Tala draws a second mark beyond the smaller eastern reefs, then connects it to the ash-stained route with a curved line in the silt.

Tala

Tala

Reach the nurseries first, then follow the warm current north to Dawnspine. Show him the sanctuary shell, and tell him Tala of Moonwake sent you.

Tala

Tala

If Vaelor will speak with anyone, it may be with another ampithere carrying a warning instead of a demand. Go carefully, traveler. The eastern reefs are waiting.

Oceania leaves Moonwake’s clear basin, carrying the carved shell against her scales. She follows the nearest reefward current, wings beating steadily through water stained by drifting ash.

Oceania

Oceania

The ash is thickening ahead, and the current is pulling sideways.

The current seizes her wounded body and turns her from the reef. She strains against it, but the ash-clouded flow drives her into a narrow trench between pale stone shelves.

Tala

Tala

Traveler, do not fight that channel. It leads beneath the nearest reef, but its lower passage is safer than the open water.

Oceania’s broad wings fold as the trench draws her beneath the reef instead of toward its exposed outer face. Blackened kelp brushes her scars, and something glints below.

The glint resolves into a row of old shell markers, each carved with Moonwake’s warning spiral. Beyond them, a hidden tunnel slopes east toward several nursery caverns.

Tala

Tala

Those markers are an abandoned sentry route. Follow them, and you can reach the eastern nurseries without crossing the hunters’ ash trail.
