The completed shell markers lead along Dawnspine’s eastern shelf toward a narrow tidal channel. Vaelor accompanies Oceania, while Dawnspine’s guardians remain behind to watch the refuge.
Vaelor pauses beside the lowest tide mark. Ahead, an adult female reef guardian clings to a tide-worn stone, compact and blue-green scaled, her dark kelp wrap torn and her warning shell cracked with pale light.
Vaelor
There. She came from the next reef, and the current nearly carried her past the shelf.
The guardian lifts her head as the tide recedes, gripping the stone with one claw. Ash threads drift around her, but the shell’s glow still marks the channel.
The Elderly Reef Guardian
Dawnspine’s signal reached us. The first nursery has received the warning, but their passage is failing. They need someone who can cross between shore and sea.
Vaelor
The channel ahead exposes its stone at low tide, then fills beneath the ash current. A messenger bound to one element would be trapped.
Vaelor looks from the cracked shell to Oceania, then toward the narrow channel. Beyond it, a faint line of pale markers disappears beneath wind-cut stone and darkening water.

Then go by the lowest mark, and let the tide choose your weight. I will watch, but I will not guide you.
Vaelor withdraws to the shelf’s edge, leaving the channel open. Oceania enters the receding water, aligning her coils with the lowest carved mark as the stone emerges beneath her.
She crosses the exposed stretch on her larger wings, letting the shaded stone bear her weight while her tail remains within the returning current. Ash drifts past without settling.
Vaelor
Do not chase the water. Wait for its return, then move with it.
The tide rises beneath Oceania’s coils. She follows its pull through the narrow channel, shifts her wings against the current, and reaches the far shelf beside the elderly reef guardian.
