Broken timbers and torn rigging drift across the eastern waters. Oceania remains entangled in the anchor chain, its links grinding over wounded sails and split scales as the foam settles.
The ship's captain surfaces beside a snapped spar, bruised and exhausted, one gloved hand locked around the wet wood. A deckhand clings to another wreckage piece several lengths away.

The Ship's Captain
Do not strike. Not yet. You have the strength to finish us, and I have no strength left to resist.
The ship's captain coughs seawater and turns her scarred brow toward the sanctuary. Behind her, the deckhand watches in silence, pale fingers tightening around the splintered timber.

The Ship's Captain
This vessel was only one part of the effort. More ships are coming, and the nesting grounds will be vulnerable again.

The Ship's Captain
Hear me before you decide what becomes of us. I know where the others gather, and why they were sent.
The deckhand glances toward the open water, where distant sails barely break the horizon. The chain shifts across Oceania’s back with a dull metallic scrape.

“I rise from the water towering over the humans. “Tell me what you know, and I may decide to let you live””
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

Oceania rises from the water, towering above the wreckage. Her torn sails lift the anchor chain with her, and blue light pulses through her wounded scales.

Oceania
Tell me what you know, and I may decide to let you live.

The Ship's Captain
The hunters gather at Blackreef, west of the sanctuary. Three ships wait there under Admiral Veyra's command.
The ship's captain keeps both hands upon the snapped spar, staring up at Oceania's horns and luminous flank. The deckhand goes rigid beside the drifting timber.

The Ship's Captain
They mean to burn the nesting cliffs at dawn, then drag the survivors into the deep. Our charts mark a hidden inlet beneath the western shelf.

The Ship's Captain
I can guide you there. I can also name the signal fires that call the fleet together. That is everything I know.

““Oh dear, it seems you are no longer of use to me” I say as I swoop down swallowing both hunters”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled -1)

Oceania
Oh dear, it seems you are no longer of use to me.
Oceania folds her great wings and swoops through the spray. Her jaws close around the captain and deckhand, carrying both from the wreckage and swallowing them whole without lingering struggle.
The anchor chain jerks violently as she dives, its hooked links tearing another strip of fragile scale from her back. Blue light spills through the wound, and the chain finally snaps free into the sea.
Silence returns around the broken timbers, but it lasts only a breath. Far west, three dark sails rise higher against the horizon, turning toward the sanctuary.
A red signal fire suddenly blooms atop the western cliffs. Its reflection trembles across the water, answering some unseen watcher among the rocks.
Oceania's wounded flank burns in the salt air, while the current carries the severed chain toward the open sea. Blackreef's fleet has seen the wreck.
Beyond the sanctuary, the approaching ships spread apart, one steering toward the nesting cliffs and two angling to intercept Oceania in the open water.
“Before heading towards black reef I clamp my jaws down on the chains and break them”
FAILURE (Superb Strength, rolled -1)

Oceania turns toward the drifting anchor chain and lunges, jaws opening wide as the severed links trail just beyond her wounded flank.
Her jaws snap shut where the chain had been, but the current has already drawn it beneath her torn sails and into deeper water.

Oceania
The chain is beyond my reach.
The missed bite twists Oceania sideways. Pain flares through the split scales along her back, and her folded wings flare to steady her against the current.
The chain sinks into green shadow, its last links vanishing beyond sight. The current carries it away from the sanctuary and toward the open sea.
Ahead, Blackreef's three ships continue their approach, one aimed at the nesting cliffs while two hold a closing angle across Oceania's path.
Red fire still burns atop the western cliffs, marking the sanctuary to every hunter who watches the water.
“Before heading towards black reef I clamp my jaws down on the chains and break them”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +0)

Oceania dives after the sinking chain, her wings beating through green water as her jaws close around the last heavy links.
Her fangs bite through iron with a thunderous snap. The chain breaks between her teeth, scattering severed links into the deep, but the shock splits two more fragile scales along her wounded back.

Oceania
The chain is broken, but the torn scales burn.
Blue light pulses through the fresh damage as Oceania releases the broken length. It sinks harmlessly beneath her, no longer able to catch her sails or drag her off course.
Above, the three Blackreef ships alter formation. The vessel bound for the cliffs continues west, while the other two turn their bows toward Oceania and raise dark signal pennants.
On the nearer deck, hunters rush to the rails, a group of adult human men and women in dark oilskin coats and leather sea helmets, their faces wind-chapped and their silhouettes broad with harnesses with loaded harpoon frames. Their shouted orders carry faintly through the wind as the ships narrow the open water around her.
The red fire still burns atop the sanctuary cliffs. Between it and the closing ships, Oceania rises through the waves, jaws free and wings spreading for Blackreef.

Break the hunters' encirclement
“I head towards the furthest ship rising infront of it cutting it off”
SUCCESS (Good Swiming, rolled +2)

Oceania folds her wings and surges westward beneath the waves, her deep-sea body cutting through the current toward the furthest Blackreef ship.
The vessel rises ahead of her, sails dark against the red-lit cliffs. Oceania angles across its bow and breaks the surface directly in its path.

The Hunters
She is in front of us! Turn away from the cliffs!
The ship's bow swings hard, but Oceania has already claimed the water before it. Her broad wings spread across the waves, blocking its westward course.

The Hunters
Loose the harpoons! Keep her from the hull!
Hunters scramble along the rails as loaded frames pivot toward her. Behind Oceania, the sanctuary cliffs remain hidden from this ship's approach, shielded by her towering body.
The vessel checks its advance and drifts broadside before her, trapped between open water and the immense guardian rising from the sea.
“I inhale deep and exhale a stream of boiling water shattering the ships hull and deck”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +1)

Oceania inhales beneath the waves, her luminous flank swelling as the trapped ship drifts broadside before her and the hunters brace along its rails.
She surges upward and exhales a blinding stream of boiling seawater. It strikes the vessel's bow, bursting through planks and deck beams in a thunderous white torrent.

The Hunters
Abandon ship! To the water, now!
The hull splits from bow to keel. The deck collapses inward, masts pitching across the wreck as shattered boards and torn rigging scatter over the waves.
Hunters leap clear before the sinking timbers close beneath them, scrambling among floating spars while steam rolls across the dark water.

The Hunters
The guardian has broken us! Signal the other ship! Warn Blackreef!
Behind the wreck, the second Blackreef vessel turns sharply toward the sanctuary, its signal pennant snapping above the sails as red fire still burns on the cliffs.
“I dive under the waves and head to the next ship bursting out of the water and wrapping around the ships hull”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +1)

Oceania folds her wings and plunges beneath the waves. Green water closes over her luminous back as she drives toward the second Blackreef ship.
The vessel's keel passes overhead, its hull groaning as the current shudders around it. Oceania rises beneath the stern and breaks the surface in a towering coil.
Her long body wraps around the hull from stern to bow, locking the ship broadside between her coils and the sanctuary cliffs. Her smaller wings brace against the waves.

The Hunters
She has us! Cut the sails and cast off the signal fire!
Hunters rush along the tilting deck, hacking at ropes while the red beacon burns above them. Their ship cannot turn, and its bow points helplessly away from open water.

The Hunters
The guardian is on the hull! Bring axes, hooks, anything that will drive her off!
Oceania's coils tighten around the vessel. Timber creaks beneath the pressure, waves climb the rails, and the ship's course toward the nesting grounds ends in her grasp.
“I tighten my grip splintering the ship into pieces and uncoil from it as it sink heading for the final ship”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +2)
Oceania tightens her coils until the ship’s timbers burst apart. Masts snap, decks collapse, and the hunters spill into the churning water among shattered planks.

The Hunters
The hull is breaking! Abandon it! Swim for the signal ship!
The red beacon still burns above the sanctuary, reflected in steam and foam. Oceania’s smaller wings brace as the wreck sinks beneath her tightening body.

Oceania
The final ship is still between me and the sanctuary.
She uncoils from the sinking wreck, releasing broken timbers and drifting hunters to the waves. Her wounded scales flare blue beneath the dark water.
Ahead, the last Blackreef vessel turns toward the nesting cliffs, sails straining as its crew sees Oceania rise behind the wreckage.

The Hunters
There! She has left the wreck! Signal Blackreef and ready every harpoon!
“I breach hard and fast next to the final ship and come crashing down through its deck and hull with a whale-like moan”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +1)
Oceania breaches beside the final Blackreef vessel, her great wings flaring as spray crowns her horns. She hangs above the deck for one thunderous instant.
Then she crashes down through the deck and hull. Timber bursts outward, masts lurch, and the ship folds around her descending body with a whale-like moan.

The Hunters
The ship is split! Abandon her! Get clear of the guardian!
The vessel breaks beneath Oceania and sinks into boiling foam. Hunters spill into the water among floating spars, while the red beacon still burns above the sanctuary cliffs.
Oceania rises through the wreckage, blue light pulsing across torn scales. Her impact has left the final ship powerless between the open sea and the nesting grounds.

The Hunters
Signal Blackreef! The guardian has destroyed every ship! Warn the admiral before she reaches the cliffs!
Far west, a answering lantern flickers beyond the reefs. In the water around Oceania, surviving hunters clutch wreckage and stare toward that distant signal, exposed but still alive.
