Shadows Beneath the Obsidian Seal

Scene 5 of 60 · High Spire Gate

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Derick Force

a tale by

Derick Force

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Inside the dim Golden Tankard, the Hooded Figure places a cold black stone on the table. Its etched runes twitch like a buried pulse, and the floorboards answer with a low groan.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

By the hearth... no. I know that stone.

The Tavern Keeper steps back from the table, pale and rigid. Joi presses close to Derick Force's leg, ears up, hackles tight.

Derick Force

Derick Force

The stone is warm in the runes, cold at the edges.

Kellan

Kellan

It is a key, Derick Force. Take it to the High Spire. There, the next seal can be made before what sleeps below Oakhaven wakes fully.

Kellan

Kellan

Bring proof that it reaches the Spire, and I will pay you in silver, ward-salt, and the name of the one who began this.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

If you mean to leave town with that thing, then leave fast. I want this night done with, and I want my roof to stay above my head.

The Hooded Figure keeps one gloved hand near the stone, but does not touch it. The offer hangs between them, heavy as a drawn blade.

Rune stone

Ask, '' do you intend not to accompany me? I don't know how to make seals, but it seems you know exactly what to do. After all, if you really want to help the town, shouldn't you prove that by making the new seal? '' Then promise, ''if you do, not only will i ensure your safety on the way, i will ensure that your name is cleared of all possible charges against you. You will have proven your innocence to me and our innkeeper friend here, after all. Two witnesses to your good deeds couldn't hurt, right? '' Show a calm smile to try and reassure him of my good intentions

SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +2)

Derick Force

Derick Force

Do you intend not to accompany me? I do not know how to make seals, but you seem to know exactly what to do. If you truly mean to help the town, make the new seal yourself.

Derick Force

Derick Force

If you do, I will ensure your safety on the way, and I will see that your name is cleared of every charge against you. Two witnesses to your good deeds cannot hurt.

Derick Force keeps his voice even and sets a calm smile on the table between them like a peace offering.

Kellan

Kellan

He is not bluffing. He means to bind himself to this.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

By the saints, let this end cleanly.

Kellan

Kellan

You would trust me with the seal, and ask me to prove myself before both of you?

Kellan

Kellan

...Very well. I will come. If the Spire is still standing, I will make the seal with my own hands.

The hooded one draws the black stone back to their chest, then nods once, sharp and reluctant. The Tavern Keeper exhales through his nose, still wary, but less ready to bolt. Joi holds close at Derick Force's side, watching the stone without blinking.

+ Scene Quest Added

Escort the Hooded Figure to the High Spire

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Tell the innkeeper we will trouble him no longer, and thank him once again for his hospitality, then stand and offer your hand in truce and cooperation, while introducing yourself officially, ''i am Derick Force, the last living member of the Force Family and proud warrior, and this is my most wonderful companion, Joi. From this moment on, the two of us shall ensure your safety and bear wittness to your deeds for this village. ''

SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +3)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Derick Force leaves the innkeeper by the firelight and turns squarely toward the hooded stranger. The barred door creaks in the dark behind him, but he does not look back.

He rises from the bench, shoulders set, and extends a hand across the scarred table in open truce.

Derick Force

Derick Force

I am Derick Force. This is Joi. From here on, we ensure your safety, and we bear witness to your deeds for this village.

Kellan

Kellan

He turns from the innkeeper first. That matters. He is choosing me, and the cost of that choice.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

At least he talks like a man who means to leave my threshold in one piece.

Kellan

Kellan

Then witness well. I will not run from the High Spire, and I will not let the seal fail there.

The hooded figure sets the obsidian stone lower, just above Derick Force’s outstretched hand. Joi stays tight to his leg, eyes fixed on the pulsing black gleam.

Say to the hooded man, ''good! Then you shall be under our protection untill the completion of our mission! Joi and i are ready when you are! '' Take the hooded mans hand in a firm, but non-hostile handshake. Next, wave at the innkeeper thanking him and telling him you would no longer disturb him

SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +2)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire
Derick Force

Derick Force

Good. Then you are under our protection until the mission is complete. Joi and I are ready when you are.

Derick Force closes the distance and takes the hooded figure’s hand in a firm, careful shake. The obsidian stone hovers between them like a threat finally held still.

Kellan

Kellan

They accept me. No, they bind themselves to the burden as well.

Kellan

Kellan

Then I will not waste this trust. I go to the High Spire with you.

At Derick Force’s side, Joi stays alert, ears forward, her body pressed close as if she already understands the vow.

Derick Force turns and lifts a hand toward the Tavern Keeper, offering a final, respectful wave through the smoke.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Aye. And take care you do not bring that trouble back to my door.

The hooded figure draws the stone back to their chest. Somewhere beyond the barred door, the wind taps the wood once, like a warning.

Leave the tavern with the hooded man, then tell Joi to guard the hooded man while giving him a bit of space, so he would not feel suffocated. Then let the hooded man lead the way while you to on hi alert to detect any possible threats to the three of you

SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +2)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

The barred door groans open at last, and cold air slips into the smoky tavern. Derick Force steps through first, then pauses to let the hooded figure move ahead with room to breathe.

Derick Force

Derick Force

Joi, stay close enough to guard him, but give him space.

Joi falls into step at Derick Force’s side, alert but measured, her gaze flicking between the hooded figure and the dark street beyond.

Kellan

Kellan

They are watching the way I move. Good. That means they are taking this seriously.

The alley outside lies narrow and wet, the stones slick with old rain. Derick Force keeps his great sword ready at his hip, eyes searching the roofs, windows, and corners for the first sign of trouble.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Keep to the main road. If the High Spire wants you dead, the dark will help it.

Kellan

Kellan

Then we walk quickly. Follow my lead, and do not let the stone be seen.

Ahead, the hooded figure turns toward the street, and a faint pulse of black light leaks once through their cloak, as if the stone answers something far away.

Match the hooded mans pace, following quickly while remaining vigilante.

FAILURE (Fair Perception, rolled -1)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Derick Force quickens his step, but the wet stones bite back. His boot skids on the rain-slick street, and he catches himself against the wall as the hooded figure pulls a few paces ahead.

Kellan

Kellan

Careful. If you lose me in this dark, the seal stays where it is.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Both of you, stay out of the side lanes. Something is already moving out there.

A low scrape answers from a shadowed alley mouth. Joi bristles at Derick Force's side, ears forward, her body tight with warning.

Derick Force

Derick Force

The street narrows ahead, and the shadows are wrong.

The hooded figure lifts one hand beneath their cloak, and the obsidian stone gives a brief, sick pulse through the fabric. The alley darkens as if the light is being swallowed.

Kellan

Kellan

Keep moving, Derick Force. Whatever follows that stone is waking up.

At the bend ahead, a black shape shifts on the roofline and drops into the street with a wet thud, blocking the road.

Match the hooded mans pace, following quickly while remaining vigilante.

SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +2)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Derick Force shifts with the skidding street, then matches the hooded figure's pace without another stumble. Joi pads close at his flank, tense and silent.

Kellan

Kellan

Good. Stay with me, then.

The shape in the road unfolds from the wet dark, broad and crouched, its outline wrong against the torchlight.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Back! Do not let it near the square!

A second scrape answers from the alley wall. Something else moves there, keeping pace just out of sight.

Kellan

Kellan

Derick Force, left or right, choose quickly. The road ahead is closing.

The black thing lowers itself across the lane, forcing the group toward the narrow side passage as the stone under the hood pulses colder.

Tell him to go right while you draw your great sword, ready to attack anything that may try to hurt the hooded man, Joi, or yourself.

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +2)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire
Derick Force

Derick Force

Right.

Derick Force cuts to the right side passage, great sword coming free in one smooth arc. Rainwater beads and flies from the blade as he squares his shoulders between the others and the dark.

Joi shadows his heel, low and ready, eyes fixed on the shape in the lane. The hooded figure slips after Derick, clutching the pulsing stone close beneath their cloak.

The black thing lunges at the opening, then checks itself as Derick's blade flashes up to meet it. Metal rings against something harder than flesh.

Kellan

Kellan

He read the angle fast.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Do not let them corner you, keep moving!

The alley ahead narrows to a wet black throat, and a second scrape answers from the wall beside them, close enough to hear.

Kick the first entity away while telling Joi to keep pace next to the hooded man and defend him. Then rush to defend Joi and the hooded man should any attacks come their way.

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +0)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Derick Force drives a hard kick into the first lurking shape, and it skids back into the rain-dark wall with a sharp crack of impact. The lane opens for one breath.

Derick Force

Derick Force

Joi, stay tight. Guard the hooded man.

Joi snaps into place at the hooded figure's flank, low and alert, her body a living wedge between them and the shadows.

Derick surges after the movement, great sword up, placing himself between the narrow lane and the strike meant for them.

Kellan

Kellan

He moves like a wall.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Left, Derick, left! It is coming off the wall!

The scrape on the stone turns into a rush of motion. Something unseen coils for another attack as rain hisses off steel and wet brick.

Strike to the left to parry the incoming blow

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled -2)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Derick Force snaps his great sword left and catches the incoming blow cleanly. Metal shrieks in the rain as the strike slides wide, sparking off the blade instead of his flank.

The unseen attacker stumbles in close, thrown off balance by the parry. The narrow lane feels tighter now, all wet stone, iron clang, and breathing space stolen away.

Kellan

Kellan

Move, Derick, it is trying to herd us!

Joi growls low at the dark shape, planted hard at the Hooded Figure’s side, ready to spring if it breaks through.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Keep it in the open, do not let it slip into the alleys!

The thing on the wall peels free in a blur of black limbs, landing wrong, then righting itself with a wet scrape against the bricks. The obsidian stone under the Hooded Figure’s cloak pulses once, hard and cold.

Kellan

Kellan

If it reaches the stone, we are all lost.

Rain pours between them as the dark shape gathers for another rush, squarely aimed at the Hooded Figure and the hidden stone.

Leap in between the figure and the hooded man, swinging the great sword in an attempt to cleave the dark shape in two

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled -1)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Derick Force drives forward through the rain, planting himself between the hooded ally and the rushing thing. His great sword arcs low, then rises in a brutal, clean line.

The dark shape meets the blade and splits its charge apart. Black threads whip loose into the wet air as it is knocked off balance, its clawed limbs skidding on stone.

Joi darts in close to the Hooded Figure’s leg, braced and snarling at the opening Derick just made.

Kellan

Kellan

Now, Derick, keep it away from me!

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

By the hearth, it is faltering, strike it again!

The obsidian stone under the cloak gives another hard pulse, colder than the rain. The thing recoils, then gathers itself with a scraping hiss, turning its ruined face back toward the pair.

At the far end of the lane, the alley shadows bunch and shift, as if something else is listening in the dark.

Tell the hooded man to keep running to his objective while keeping pressure on the shadow

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +0)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire
Derick Force

Derick Force

Run to the Spire. Keep moving. I will hold this thing.

Derick Force does not chase the shadow. He plants his boots in the slick stone and cuts across its path, forcing it to recoil from the route ahead.

The hooded ally darts past, cloak snapping in the rain, the obsidian stone hugged tight beneath it.

Kellan

Kellan

I am going. Do not let it reach me.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Good, keep it moving! The lane is not safe for fighting!

The dark thing lunges anyway, its shattered limbs clawing for Derick Force and the retreating figure both.

Derick Force answers with a hard, disciplined strike that turns the lunge aside, driving the creature back into the alley mouth.

The shadows at the far end of the lane draw tighter, and something unseen begins to press forward through them.

Rush to defend your companions from the unseen force, ready to turn aside any attack meant for Joi and the hooded man

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +3)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Derick Force pivots into the gap between his companions and the pressure in the dark. His great sword lifts in a measured guard, ready to meet the next strike before it lands.

Joi presses close behind him, ears low, body angled toward the alley mouth. The hooded figure keeps moving, stone clutched tight beneath the cloak.

Something hidden in the shadows surges forward, and Derick Force turns with it, blade flashing to intercept the blow that would have found Joi first.

The impact rings down the lane. Rain sprays from the sword edge as the unseen force skids off line, robbed of its opening.

Kellan

Kellan

Keep on me, both of you. The path to the High Spire cannot fail now.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

By the roots, that thing was waiting for the child. Move!

The pressure in the alley shifts. The darkness ahead parts just enough to show a taller shape gathering itself for another charge.

Angered by the attack meant for Joi, you rush forward in a flash to strike the taller shape before it can attack

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +2)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Derick Force surges into the opening before the taller shadow can commit. His great sword arcs low, then up, biting through the rain and darkness in one hard line.

The shadow jerks back as the strike lands true. Its shape folds inward, driven off balance, and the alley wall shudders with the force of the blow.

Joi darts to Derick’s flank, steady and alert, while the Hooded Figure keeps moving with the stone hidden tight beneath their cloak.

Kellan

Kellan

That blade opens the way. Do not let them gather again!

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

There, that's the one. Drive it back before the rest come through!

The wounded shadow hisses and recoils into the lane's black edge. Farther ahead, more movement stirs, a second and third shape sliding out of the rain-choked dark.

Kellan

Kellan

Derick Force, the path narrows. Choose, press forward now, or hold them here while I run?

Tell Joi to stay by the hooded man. Then tell the hooded man to run through the opening you make for him. Still enraged from the recent attempt to hurt Joi, you charge forward to cut open a path through the enemies

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +1)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire
Derick Force

Derick Force

Joi, stay by the hooded man!

Derick Force

Derick Force

Run through the opening I make!

Derick Force lunges into the rain, shoulders low, great sword flashing wide to claim the lane.

The first shadow meets steel and splits back into the dark, driven off with a spray of wet grit.

A second shape rushes in. Derick turns the blade in a hard, brutal cut, and it stumbles aside, leaving the path open.

Kellan

Kellan

Move, now! I have the stone!

Joi holds tight to the Hooded Figure’s heel as they bolt past the gap, cloak snapping in the storm.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Keep going, both of you, more are coming from the lane!

Behind Derick, three more shapes spill from the rain-choked street, hemming in the old way with hunger and speed.

Follow the hooded man and your dog after they pass through the path you made. Keeping close to Joi and the hooded man, you continue your defense of the hooded man and your dog, ready to deliver a deadly counter to any attacks made at Joi and the Hooded man

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +0)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Derick Force drives in after them, boots skidding on the rain-slick stones as he keeps his body between the shadows and the fleeing pair.

Joi hugs the Hooded Figure’s flank, ears pinned, while the cloaked ally clutches the obsidian stone tighter under one arm.

A shadow snaps low at Joi. Derick twists, and the flat of his great sword slams it aside before it can reach her.

Another shape lunges for the Hooded Figure’s back. Derick steps through the gap, blade carving a hard line through the rain and forcing it to recoil.

Kellan

Kellan

They will not stop. The stone is drawing them!

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Left lane! If you can cut through, do it now!

Three more figures pour out ahead, slick black forms spreading across the street and closing the only clear exit.

Charge forward and ensure the path stays open for the hooded man and your dog Joi by killing the three new entities as quickly as possible so the hooded man and your dog can pass without slowing down

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled -2)

Derick Force surges into the opening before the three shadows can seal it. His great sword flashes once, then again, each cut hard enough to split the rain around him.

The first figure breaks apart in a burst of black mist. The second reels back, its shape unraveling under a crushing slash to the chest.

Joi darts past Derick’s heel as the Hooded Figure slips through the widening gap, the obsidian stone pulsing like a second heart beneath their cloak.

The last shadow lunges low. Derick pivots, catches it on the flat, then drives the blade through its center and pins it to the wet stones.

Kellan

Kellan

Now, Derick, keep moving. They are not done.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Behind you, then. Do not let them circle!

The pinned shadow shrieks and splits into drifting soot. Ahead, the street opens toward the black rise of the High Spire, but more movement stirs in the dark mouths of the side lanes.

Tell the hooded man to pay no mind to enemies and to simply run as fast as possible. Then tell Joi to keep at his side defending him. Then run ahead of Joi and the hooded man to keep the path open.

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +0)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire
Derick Force

Derick Force

Pay no mind to them, just run. Joi, stay at my side and defend him.

Derick Force tears forward before the others can falter, his boots splashing through the rain as he seizes the lane ahead. The first shape in the side street rises to block the way, but he meets it with a brutal shoulder check and a sweeping cut that drives it back into shadow.

Joi snaps into place beside the Hooded Figure, all watchful focus and tight, protective movement. The Hooded Figure clutches the stone under the cloak and runs hard, keeping low behind Derick's moving wall of steel.

Kellan

Kellan

The path is yours, Derick. Hold them off a little longer.

Two more shadows spill from a narrow gap ahead, but Derick is already there. He plants his feet, turns the great sword in a tight arc, and clears both from the street with one powerful pass.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

That way, all of you, keep to the open road!

The street opens toward the black mass of the High Spire, yet the darkness behind them keeps crawling. At the edge of the lamplight, fresh movement gathers in the side lanes, as if the hunt is not over, only changing shape.

Adjust to the new enemies positions and keep cleaving a path for Joi and the hooded man, refusing to let anything near them

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +1)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Derick Force shifts with the tide of the attack, angling his blade to guard the fleeing pair instead of chasing every shadow. One lunging shape meets the flat of his sword and skids away in a spray of rain.

Joi keeps tight to the Hooded Figure, circling their flank with sharp, low steps. The stone under the cloak throbs once, and the nearest darkness hesitates.

A taller shadow drops from the eaves ahead, reaching for the Hooded Figure. Derick pivots first and cuts upward, forcing it to recoil before its hand can close.

Kellan

Kellan

Left, Derick. They are trying to box us in.

Derick answers by carving a hard line through the left side lane, his great sword flashing twice in a single controlled sweep. The path opens just enough for Joi and the Hooded Figure to slip through.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Keep moving, all of you. The road is still open if you do not stop!

Then the lamplight ahead flickers, and fresh movement gathers at the edge of the road, closing fast from both sides.

Sprint ahead with all your speed, timing and aiming your next powerful wide sweeping sword swing to catch all enemies in one blow

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled -1)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Derick Force drives forward before the trap can close, boots splashing through the narrow street. His great sword comes around in a brutal, widening arc.

The first shadow hits the blade and bursts apart into smoke. A second stumbles into the sweep, then a third, each driven back by the same crushing line.

Dark shapes spill away from the road in pieces, forced to scatter toward the side lanes. The lamplight steadies for a heartbeat as the path opens.

Kellan

Kellan

That cuts us a lane. Move, now!

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Keep to the center! Do not let them hem you in again!

Joi darts close to Derick's leg, then angles toward the Hooded Figure as the pair surge through the gap. The obsidian stone under the cloak pulses harder, answering something deeper in the dark.

Ahead, more silhouettes gather at the end of the road, and one raises an arm as if to signal. The street tightens again, and the next rush is already starting.

Send Joi ahead at the shadow with its arm raised to distract the shadow before it can give a command so you can attack the enemies before they even be told what to do

SUCCESS (Superb Animal Handling, rolled +0)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Joi bursts ahead on Derick Force's signal, low and fast, a red blur through the wet street.

Kellan

Kellan

They are trying to warn the others. Hold the line!

The nearest shadow jerks toward the dog, its raised arm breaking into a sharp, half formed command.

Joi snaps past its reach and cuts across its path, forcing the figure to recoil and lose the signal.

Derick Force uses the opening at once, boots slamming through the puddles as his great sword rises for the strike.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Now, while they are scattered! Don't give them a second breath!

The front rank wavers as Joi circles back toward Derick Force, teeth bared, while the shadow line collapses into confusion.

Take full advantage of the pandemonium to keep the way clear, recall Joi back to the hooded mans flank to keep him defended, and encourage the hooded man to keep running

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +2)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Derick Force drives into the gap, great sword sweeping low through rain and shadow alike. One assailant stumbles back, its shape tearing apart at the knees.

Joi darts to the Hooded Figure's flank on Derick's call, shoulders tight, eyes fixed on the dark ahead. The path opens for a heartbeat.

Kellan

Kellan

Keep moving. Do not stop for them.

The Hooded Figure surges forward with the obsidian stone clutched close, cloak snapping behind them. Two shadows lunge, but Derick plants himself between blade and back.

Joi snaps at a reaching arm, driving the attacker sideways into a wall of wet brick. The figure's signal breaks again, lost in the panic.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

That's it, keep them off the road! Don't let the lot of them regroup!

Ahead, the street bends toward a pale rise of stone, the first outer approach to the High Spire. Behind them, the scattered shadows gather for one more rush.

Tell the hooded man to get to the rise of stone, send Joi to keep him defended, then turn around to face the last of the enemies to defend the rear. Bellow a great war cry to attract all enemies to you and shatter their composure to try to keep up the enemies confusion

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +0)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire
Derick Force

Derick Force

Get to the rise. Joi, with him.

Derick Force turns hard on his heel, planting himself in the road while the others keep moving for the pale stone ahead. Rain beads on his cuirass as he squares to the oncoming dark.

Joi breaks from the Hooded Figure and snaps into place at their flank, low and ready, every muscle aimed back toward Derick.

Kellan

Kellan

We move, then. Keep the road open.

The last shadows rush in together, but Derick answers with a bellow that shakes the narrow street. The nearest shapes hesitate, their charge breaking apart.

He meets the first with a brutal sweep of steel and forces the second back into the slick wall. Black fragments spin through the rain like torn smoke.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

That's the way, Force. Hold them there!

Behind him, the Hooded Figure gains the stone rise, cloak whipping in the wind, while Joi circles tight to guard their retreat. More movement gathers at the bend, just out of reach.

Send Joi to run distraction around the bend while you catch up and encourage the hooded man to keep moving

SUCCESS (Superb Animal Handling, rolled +0)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire

Joi darts past the bend in a blur of red fur and rain, then cuts back with a sharp bark, dragging the eye of the shadows away from the road ahead.

Derick Force surges forward a half step, sword ready, using the opening to close the gap with the Hooded Figure.

Kellan

Kellan

Good, keep them looking elsewhere. The rise is just ahead.

A shadow lunges toward Joi, but she feints low, slips wide, and leaves it snapping at empty rain.

The nearest dark shape breaks from the bend, confused by the sudden dog sprint, and Derick crashes into it before it can regroup.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Move, all of you. I can see more of them gathering behind!

Joi loops back toward Derick and the Hooded Figure, hackles high, her detour buying just enough space for the trio to press toward the pale stone rise as the bend churns with fresh movement.

Laugh out loud in celebration of Joi's flawless distraction and quickly call her back to defend the hooded man while he ran, then continue to keep the path ahead open

SUCCESS (Superb Animal Handling, rolled -2)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire
Derick Force

Derick Force

Joi, back to me. Guard the hooded man.

Joi snaps around at once, red fur streaking through the rain as she abandons the shadow's flank and tucks in close to Derick's side.

Derick Force drives forward with his great sword low, forcing the nearest dark shapes to hesitate at the bend.

Kellan

Kellan

The path is opening. Keep moving, keep moving.

A fresh pair of shadows spill out from the side lane, but they meet Derick's hard advance and slow under the threat of his blade.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Left, now. The rise will take you out of their reach if you do not stop!

The Hooded Figure clutches the obsidian stone tighter under the cloak and runs for the pale stone rise, while Joi bars the rear with a low, warning growl.

Continue to clear the way, making sure Joi and the hooded man are still giving it their all

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +0)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire
Derick Force

Derick Force

The gap is wide enough to push through if we move now.

Derick Force swings his great sword in a wide, whistling arc, the steel singing through the rain as it shears through the nearest encroaching shadow.

Kellan

Kellan

I see it. I have the stone, but stay close, the energy is turning erratic.

Joi darts between a pair of lingering specters, nipping at their heels to keep them distracted, her hackles raised against the unnatural cold.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Keep running, Force! Don't let them cluster, the shadows are thickening by the gate!

Derick Force lunges, his boots sliding across the slick cobblestones as he slams his shoulder into a dark mass, dispersing it into harmless mist and clearing the path to the higher ground.

You sprint towards the thickest cluster of enemies by the gate, take a great leap and stomp the ground in the middle of them, bellowing a war cry to scatter them, making it easier to clear the gate

SUCCESS (Good Athletics, rolled -1)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire
Derick Force

Derick Force

The gate is their focal point, if I break their formation there, they will shatter.

Derick Force gathers his strength, muscles coiling like steel cables beneath his breastplate. He lunges, leaping high into the air, a blur of motion against the dismal sky.

He hits the mud in the center of the shadowy cluster with a thunderous impact. As his boots find the cobblestones, he releases a deep, primal roar that echoes off the stone walls of the alley.

The shockwave ripples through the puddles and the black entities alike, causing the dark masses to recoil and lose their cohesive shape.

The Tavern Keeper

The Tavern Keeper

Look at that! Get through now, while they are reeling!

Kellan

Kellan

The gate is opening, Derick. We must move before they stabilize!

Hold your ground, ushering the others through first to ensure the safe passage of Joi and the hooded man, only following through once they were both inside. You slam the gate shut

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled -1)

The Obsidian Key and the High Spire
Derick Force

Derick Force

Get them through first. The gate is my priority.

Derick Force pivots, his great sword a sweeping arc of steel that keeps the grasping shadows at bay. He gestures firmly with his off hand, barking a silent command to Joi.

The dog surges forward, herding the limping Hooded Figure toward the iron gates of the High Spire. They scramble over the threshold as the shadows coalesce into sharp, reaching claws.

Kellan

Kellan

Close it! Do not let them cross the threshold!

Derick Force plants his boots firmly, grabbing the heavy iron handle with both hands. With a grunt of exertion, he heaves the gate shut.

The metal groans in protest, slamming home with a finality that vibrates through the stone. Beyond the bars, the shadowy mass strikes the gate, turning into harmless mist upon contact.
