Adventure of Rika Everwood

Rika enters the narrow passage alone, still holding the recovered route fragment. Behind her, the Cooperage Workers remain at the sealed cisterns as blue light draws her beneath the cliff.

The passage opens into a round chamber where ancient stones encircle a weakening seal. Rainwater trickles upward through cracks in the floor, gathering into silver beads before vanishing into the ward.

Symbols etched along the fragment brighten in sequence. Their shapes align with the encircling stones, and a concealed seam opens beyond the seal, revealing steps descending deeper beneath the cliff.

The ward gives a low, uneven pulse. Across its oldest stone, newly revealed writing warns that the next delivery is imminent, though no date or name survives the weathered surface.

Blue radiance spills down the hidden steps and fades into darkness. The weakening seal holds for now, while the upward-flowing rain continues to feed its failing edges.

Rika studies the weakening seal without touching it. Her Keen Senses separate the upward trickle of rainwater from the ward’s uneven pulse and catch fine trap-lines between the encircling stones.

Basic Ward Reading reveals that the stones do not merely contain the seal: each receives a different portion of its failing force. The recovered route fragment bears matching channels.

Her Feared Reputation presses the familiar impulse to fit the fragment quickly. Rika checks that urge, measuring the pulse and identifying the quiet interval between each stone’s response.

She aligns the fragment’s first symbol with the lowest stone, then turns it through the remaining marks. Keen Senses catch a concealed catch beneath the final edge before it can bite.

The fragment settles into place. Blue light travels around the ring in a clean circuit, and the upward-flowing water drops back through the cracks as the seal steadies.

A narrow line of writing brightens across the oldest stone, revealing a clear route symbol beneath the warning. The hidden steps remain open, but the chamber’s failing ward no longer threatens to collapse.
