Adventure of Rika Everwood

The hooded gatekeeper leads Rika through a narrow stair cut into the settlement’s foundations. His blue-clasped mantle brushes the walls as wardfires fade behind them.

The stair opens into a record crypt. Shelves of sealed clay tablets and black stone slates surround a low examination table, its grooves dim beneath layers of dust.

Rika places the cord-bound coffer near the warded grooves. A deliberate knock sounds from within, and blue lines awaken across the table’s stone surface.

Light gathers above the grooves, forming a route map of the eastern hills and buried crossings. One section has been deliberately removed, leaving a clean-edged absence.

A fresh trail then brightens beyond the missing section, winding toward a symbol absent from every surrounding tablet: an unregistered workshop. The gatekeeper leans closer without touching the projection.

The projected trail holds steady above the table, ending at the workshop’s unmarked doorway. Around it, the sealed tablets remain silent, waiting for examination.

Rika examines the sealed tablets in their shelves, keeping the payment ledger open beside her. Casewise Investigation sorts dates, marks, and crossings while Basic Ward Reading identifies records safe to inspect.

Keen Senses catch faint dust breaks and concealed ward seams around three tablets. The marks match the projected route, but her Feared Reputation urges a quick choice before she patiently compares the sequence.

She selects the first tablet by its matching eastern-hills symbol and studies its sealed edge without opening it. Basic Ward Reading reveals a viewing angle that lets the inscription show through the stone’s surface.

The tablet’s reflected light joins the map. A second mark appears beneath the missing section, then a third, forming a concealed route through buried crossings to the unregistered workshop.

The ledger confirms the route’s dates and payment notation. Casewise Investigation matches its coded entries to the tablet marks, identifying the removed section as a deliberate concealment, not damage.

The recovered route settles into the projection, revealing the workshop’s approach and a side passage marked for incoming consignments. The sealed tablets remain intact around the examination table.

Rika places the payment ledger open beside the projected map. Her Traveler’s Tell gives the request the steady cadence of a practiced road declaration, while her feared reputation lends it a sharper edge than intended.

She keeps her evidence visible and lets the dates, marks, and concealed route speak together. The gatekeeper studies the ledger, then the map, recognizing a claim supported by records rather than haste.

The hooded gatekeeper presses two fingers to the route projection. Blue light travels from the crypt table toward the eastern hills, and a narrow side passage opens between the shelves.

The projection fixes the authorized path in clear blue lines. The side passage stands open, leading beneath the eastern hills toward the hidden workshop.

Rika lifts the payment ledger from beside the glowing map and tucks it securely against her side. The authorized blue route remains fixed between the shelves.

She enters the narrow side passage. Traveler’s Tell settles her pace into the measured movement of someone carrying proof through unfamiliar ground, while the ledger’s weight keeps her attention anchored.

The passage slopes sharply beneath the eastern hills. Rika’s boot slips on powdered stone, and she catches herself against the wall, bruising her shoulder before keeping the ledger clear.

Rika continues despite the fresh ache. The blue markings recognize the ledger as she passes, opening small ward-lights ahead and confirming each turn through the buried route.

She emerges into a low stone gallery beneath the eastern hills, ledger intact and passage behind her. Beyond an arched threshold, faint workshop light glows through drifting dust.
