Poison Beneath the Rain
Caldus
Caldus

Rain crashes down from a cloudless sky, drumming on the fish market’s canvas and flooding its stalls. Dry earth turns slick beneath Rika’s boots as brine and muddy water stream toward the harbor.

Against an overturned fish cart lies a fallen paladin, an adult man in dulled silver armor, broad-shouldered beneath a soaked blue cloak. His ash-pale face is clenched with pain, dark veins crawling beneath his skin.

Caldus

Caldus

Take this. Quickly.

His gauntleted hand thrusts forward, offering a sealed glass vial. With the other, he points weakly toward the harbor, where the first runoff slips through gutters and alleys.

Caldus

Caldus

The cisterns. Poison is running into them. I am Caldus, paladin of the Dawn Vow.

A distant bell begins ringing through the downpour. Caldus’s breath catches, his short black hair plastered to his brow, and his fingers tighten around the vial before he forces it into Rika’s reach.

Caldus

Caldus

Find what caused it. Then get me beyond the rain, if there is still time.

Caldus

Rika closes her hand around the vial before rain can wash it from Caldus’s gauntlet. The glass is cold, and the seal remains unbroken.

Caldus

Caldus

Good. Keep it upright. If the poison reaches the harbor wells, the whole lower quarter drinks it.

The bell tolls again, nearer now. Rainwater races through the market gutters toward the harbor, carrying scales, leaves, and a faint oily shimmer.

Caldus

Caldus

The trail begins beneath the old cooperage. I saw a black sigil burned into the drainage stones.

Caldus’s armored shoulder slips against the cart, and he catches himself with a shaking hand. The dark veins have spread along his throat.

Caldus

Caldus

Do not waste the vial on me. Find the source first. Then come back, if Dawn still favors me.

The vial rests securely in Rika’s grasp as the storm drives her attention toward the harbor lanes and the distant cooperage beyond them.

“look for the source of the poison”

SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +1)

Poison Beneath the Rain

Rika follows the oily shimmer uphill through the flooded market, scanning every gutter and drainage stone while her elven senses separate poison from rain, brine, and rot.

Beneath the old cooperage, she finds the black sigil burned into the stones. Its edges are fresh, and thin threads of dark liquid seep from a covered drain beside it.

Rika Everwood

Rika Everwood

The poison is entering through the drain, not washing in from the harbor.

Keen senses warn her of a concealed wire before her fingers reach the grate. She traces it to a small iron bell tucked beneath the mud, then cuts the line without ringing it.

Under the grate, a clay canister rests in the runoff channel, its wax seal split and its black contents mixing steadily with the rainwater. The canister bears the same sigil.

The source is found: the leaking canister beneath the old cooperage. Water carries its poison toward the harbor, but the sealed vial in Rika’s hand remains ready for whatever comes next.

Beyond the cooperage walls, rain pounds the roof and the warning bell continues to toll. The hidden drain, the sigil, and the canister now mark a clear trail back to whoever placed them.

“I seal or remove the leaking canister”

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -1)

Poison Beneath the Rain

Rika’s elven senses catch the canister’s unstable weight and the hair-thin tension in the runoff before she reaches beneath the grate. The poison’s movement maps a safe grip through the murk.

Her Divine Blessing of Stealth stills the small sounds of her work. She slips two fingers beneath the clay vessel, braces her wrist against the channel, and lifts it clear of the flowing water.

The split wax seal shifts as the canister comes free. Rika clamps her palm over it and presses the lid down hard, stopping the black seep before more reaches the drain.

Her boot skids on the slime-slick stone. She catches herself against the grate, scraping her forearm, but keeps the canister upright and sealed in both hands.

Rainwater rushes around the empty channel now, carrying only diluted residue toward the harbor. The sigil remains burned into the stone, while the source is safely removed.

The canister is sealed, but the poison has already touched the drain.

Rika rises with the clay vessel secured against her, a thin red scrape bright on her forearm. Above, the warning bell continues through the rain, and the cooperage waits in darkness.

“I carry the canister somewhere safely contained”

SUCCESS (Good Athletics, rolled +0)

Poison Beneath the Rain

Rika tucks the sealed canister beneath her cloak, keeping its lid upright against her ribs. Her athletic footing carries her through the flooded cooperage yard without jarring the clay.

Rain lashes her scraped forearm, but her grip stays firm. The Divine Blessing of Stealth quiets each careful step, hiding the canister’s movement beneath the storm’s roar.

Rika Everwood

Rika Everwood

The cooperage cellar should keep it away from the drains.

She shoulders open the cooperage door and descends into the dark cellar, where stacked barrels stand above the flooding threshold and the air smells of dry oak.

At the rear, Rika finds an empty iron-bound storage chest on a raised pallet. She lowers the canister inside with both hands, steady despite the ache in her forearm.

She closes the chest and draws its hasp through the metal loop, placing the poison safely above the runoff and beyond accidental contact. The canister remains sealed.

When Rika returns to the cellar stairs, rain and warning bells are muffled behind the walls. The dangerous source is contained, and the path to Caldus remains open.

“I warn workers to close the cistern inlets”

SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +2)

Poison Beneath the Rain

Rika reaches the cooperage’s rain-dark yard, where three workers hurry between stacked barrels and the stone cistern mouth. Their hands hover over the inlet levers.

Rika Everwood

Rika Everwood

Close every cistern inlet. Poison is running through the drainage stones, and the harbor quarter will drink it if you leave them open.

The workers freeze. Rika’s feared reputation makes one glance toward the door, expecting an impulsive order, but her keen elven senses catch the faint oily thread already slipping beneath the nearest grate.

Cooperage Workers

Cooperage Workers

Close them! All of them, now!

They wrench the iron covers down across the cistern inlets. One worker checks the eastern channel, while the others bar the remaining openings against the rushing rain.

Cooperage Workers

Cooperage Workers

They’re sealed. No water enters from the yard.

The warning bell still tolls beyond the walls, but the cistern mouths are shut. Rika’s sharp senses find no open inlet left, and the workers wait for her next instruction.
