Adventure of Rika Everwood

Rika stands beside the cord-bound bronze coffer at the chamber’s drier edge. Beyond the opened gate, blue light spills down a descending causeway into a vast settlement carved beneath the cliff.

Terraced dwellings, bridges, and distant pillars vanish into the subterranean dark. Across the threshold waits a hooded gatekeeper, a lean older man with ash-gray skin, a narrow face, and a blue-clasped brown mantle.

His gaze fixes on the hooked-black mark. He does not reach for a weapon, but one gloved hand settles against the gate’s central seal while the blue wards brighten around him.

The demand echoes along the descending causeway. Behind Rika, the freed recess and its fading blue paths remain undisturbed; far beyond the cliff, the Cooperage Workers still guard the sealed cisterns.

The gatekeeper waits without blinking, barring the only visible route into the buried settlement. The coffer’s clasps remain tight against Rika’s cord, its single earlier knock unanswered.

The urge to press harder and make the declaration a challenge sharpens Rika’s tone, but she reins it in. Her Keen Senses catch every shift in the gatekeeper’s posture and the ward’s response.

The blue wards soften from warning to steady illumination. The gatekeeper removes his hand from the central seal, though his eyes remain fixed on the coffer.

The gate’s inner wards withdraw from the causeway, revealing the descending path into the buried settlement. The coffer remains cord-bound behind Rika, accepted but not yet opened.

The gatekeeper’s expression tightens as the blue wards settle. The coffer is no longer treated as a living link to the settlement, but as a remnant brought from elsewhere.

The words echo through the causeway. Far below, the settlement remains lit by patient wardfires, but none answer the Black Hook’s presence.

The distinction settles the mystery’s shape: the hidden operation beneath the settlement has ended, while its records and obligations remain dangerous enough to travel in a sealed coffer.

Rika’s Traveler’s Tell lends the declaration the plain cadence of a road truth, supported by the payment ledger in her possession. Her Feared Reputation sharpens the urge behind her tone, but she reins it into controlled certainty.

The gatekeeper studies the ledger, then the cord-bound coffer. Blue wards soften from warning to steady illumination, and his hand leaves the central seal.

The inner wards withdraw from the causeway, revealing the descending route into the buried settlement. The coffer remains secured, accepted rather than opened, while the gate stands ready.

Rika grips the bronze coffer beneath its base and carries it across the opened threshold. Its weight bows her shoulders, but Traveler’s Tell settles her pace into the measured cadence of a practiced road burden.

Her Feared Reputation feeds the urge to hurry under the gatekeeper’s watch. She checks that impulse before it becomes a reckless lurch, keeping both feet firm on the blue-lit causeway.

The coffer’s bronze sides bite coldly into her palms. Its shifting weight pulls against her scraped forearm, and pain flares sharply as she adjusts her hold without dropping the burden.

She crosses beneath the ancient gate and enters the buried settlement, carrying the cord-bound Black Hook past rows of ward-lit dwellings and bridges suspended over the dark.

Rika lowers the coffer onto a broad waystone inside the settlement. Her forearm throbs from the effort, but the Black Hook is across the threshold, secured and intact.
