The Unstable Original Seal

The record case remains beneath the eastern warehouse, while the three cooperage workers stay behind at the sealed cisterns. Rika stands alone in the crystal-lined vault beside the silent jars.

Without warning, the case’s outer protections pulse beneath the floor. Hairline cracks of pale light spread across its lid, answering with a low tremor through the stone.

The seal is failing from within.

The exposed consignment writing rearranges itself in cramped, shifting strokes. Dates and quantities slide aside, replaced by a stark warning: ORIGINAL SEAL UNSTABLE. CONTAINMENT WILL NOT HOLD.

The loosened panel clicks open by itself, revealing a narrow gap into the records. Pale light leaks through the seam, but the pulse grows faster whenever the lid moves.

The black-sigiled jars remain stoppered around the case. Whatever the original ward contained is pressing against its failing boundaries, and the records now offer access at a dangerous price.

✓ Quest Accepted

Stabilize the failing seal

“I study the failing seal for a way to stabilize it without opening the lid.”

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +2)

The Unstable Original Seal

Rika studies the failing seal without lifting the lid. Her Keen Senses separate the ward’s pulses from the case’s ordinary tremor, revealing three points where the pale light feeds inward.

Basic Ward Reading shows the original pattern is collapsing unevenly. A stabilizing circuit can be traced around the lid, but only if the inward flow is redirected before it reaches the central seam.

The seal is failing in a repeating sequence.

Feared Reputation urges a quick touch at the brightest fracture. Rika checks that impulse, waits through two pulses, and identifies the safe interval between the ward’s surges.

She presses crystal dust into the three outer junctions, then draws their lines together with careful pressure. The circuit catches the escaping light and turns it back through the seal.

The cracks fade to a steady pale thread. The tremor ceases, the warning writing settles, and the lid remains closed. The case is stabilized without opening it, its records contained for now.
