Rose Interrupted in the Rain

Rain whispers beyond the strangler fig. Time stretches in the cramped shelter, and Rose’s pressure slowly gathers behind Mariposo’s eyes, patient enough to wait until his resistance thins.

Mariposo's turn

“"So... How did you come across all of this?"”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +1)

Mariposo

Mariposo

So... how did you come across all of this?

Veyran studies him in the dim shelter, rain ticking softly above the roots. For once, he does not reach for a jest or a convenient half-truth.

Veyran

Veyran

I was paid to move a ledger out of a royal counting house. The client called it routine, but the figures were too carefully altered to be innocent.

He shifts beneath the strangler fig, guarding the records beneath his robes while his scraped palm rests against his knee. His voice lowers with the rain.

Veyran

Veyran

I followed the false payments through three intermediaries and found they all led back to the Comptroller’s office. The sealed packet was proof, not rumor.

Veyran

Veyran

I took it because the crown meant to erase the trail, and because I knew what erasure does to people who have already lost their name. Then I needed someone who could prove the records were not merely mine.

Mariposo's turn

“"I guess I just don't get it. Why try to uncover this truth? You're not my kin, so what does it matter to you if we're slaughtered and erased from history?" I ask.”

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Mariposo

Mariposo

I guess I just don't get it. Why uncover this truth? You're not my kin. Why care if we're slaughtered and erased from history?

Veyran’s hand remains lightly closed in Mariposo’s scruff, more anchor than restraint. He studies the damp roots, weighing the answer while rain whispers beyond their shelter.

Veyran

Veyran

Because I have watched powerful men call a person’s disappearance administrative necessity. They make the bodies vanish, then make the memory inconvenient.

His fingers tighten once against Mariposo’s collar, and his guarded expression gives way to something older than profit. The records lie between them, sealed and dangerous.

Veyran

Veyran

I am not Rhukkhadevata, no. But I know what it is to be made useful only while I stay silent. Your people deserve witnesses, even if the crown would rather have graves.

Rose

Rose

He wants to keep you, darling. Let him prove how much.

Rose’s pressure curls behind Mariposo’s eyes, hungry but contained. Veyran does not release him, yet the grip becomes almost protective as the answer settles into the cramped darkness.

Mariposo's turn

“"Where should we go?"”

Mariposo

Where should we go?

Veyran

Veyran

North, to the ruined shrine of Saint Orra. It stands beyond the jungle’s blackwater fork, abandoned by the crown and hidden from ordinary roads. We can rest there, study the records, and decide whom to trust.

Veyran releases Mariposo’s scruff, then points through the curtain of roots toward a faint paling between the trees. His scraped palm leaves a dark smear on the bark.

Veyran

Veyran

We follow the stream until it splits around the stone teeth. Take the left branch. The shrine lies two hours beyond it, on ground high enough to stay dry.

Rose’s pressure coils behind Mariposo’s eyes, impatient but contained. Outside, the rain slackens, and the jungle reveals a narrow trail marked by pale fungus along its roots.

Veyran

Veyran

We leave now, before the pursuers reach these trees. At the shrine, we can open the packet safely and learn how deep the Comptroller’s hand goes.

Veyran gathers the records beneath his robes and ducks from the strangler fig. The route is plain now: north along the stream, left at the fork, then uphill to Saint Orra’s ruined shrine.

Mariposo's turn

“"And what happens when we uncover this truth? I saw you back there, struggling to put up first year wards. I'm no better, my skillset lies between unlocking doors and bra straps," I scoffed. "Are we not, oh, I don't know... A bit in over our heads?"”

And what happens when we uncover this truth? I saw you back there, struggling to put up first-year wards. I'm no better. My skillset lies between unlocking doors and bra straps. Are we not, oh, I don't know... a bit in over our heads?

The question settles harder than Mariposo's scoff. Veyran stops beneath the dripping roots, one hand still guarding the packet, and looks back without reaching for another convenient jest.

Veyran

Veyran

Yes. We are in over our heads. That is not the same as being doomed. I struggled because I was buying time, not because I believed the ward would save us forever.

He taps the sealed packet beneath his robes, then points toward the paling trail. His expression remains tired, but the uncertainty in it has become something he is willing to name.

Veyran

Veyran

When we uncover the truth, we do not pretend it makes us heroes. We put it where the right people can see it, and we survive long enough to make hiding it costly.

Rose

Rose

He admits the danger, darling. That makes his courage more interesting, not less.

Veyran steps onto the fungus-marked trail and waits rather than ordering Mariposo onward. North lies through the wet jungle, and for once the risk between them has been spoken plainly.

Mariposo's turn

“"No one will believe us, and then they will kill us," I plainly state.”

Mariposo

Mariposo

No one will believe us, and then they will kill us.

The words come out plainly, stripped of Mariposo’s usual flourish. His voice thins at the end, and the small tremor in his breath betrays how much composure the admission costs him.

Veyran

Veyran

Some will not believe us. Some will want us dead. But others only need proof placed before them clearly enough that denial becomes dangerous.

Veyran’s grip remains at Mariposo’s scruff, steady and lightly restraining. He notices the tremor, but does not mock it; instead, he waits beside the fungus-marked trail.

Rose

Rose

There, darling. You have finally said the fear aloud.

Veyran

Veyran

Fear is useful when it keeps us honest. It becomes a grave only if it convinces us to lie down inside it. Come on. We have a shrine to reach.

He gives Mariposo’s scruff one brief, almost playful tug, then turns north along the wet trail. The fear remains, but so does the path, pale beneath the jungle’s dripping roots.

Veyran’s hand remains hooked in Mariposo’s scruff as they follow the stream north. The jungle floor slopes gently upward, and pale fungus marks each root beneath their feet.

Veyran

Veyran

Then we make belief unnecessary. The ledger has names, dates, and payments. Facts can survive a frightened witness if enough eyes see them.

He loosens his grip just enough to stop restraining Mariposo, though his fingers remain ready at the collar. Ahead, the stream widens around two jagged teeth of black stone.

Rose

And if they still refuse, darling, we can make surviving them very entertaining.

The left branch slips beneath a curtain of hanging vines. Veyran checks the packet, then guides Mariposo toward it, keeping his body between the trail behind them and the dark water.

Veyran

Veyran

Left branch. After that, Saint Orra’s stones are close. We reach the shrine before anyone decides our silence is safer than our testimony.

They take the left fork. Behind them, the jungle closes over the pale trail, and the first broken stones of the ruined shrine rise through the mist ahead.

Mariposo's turn

“"It will get passed off as slander against the crown. Maternius' people are fiercely loyal."”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled -2)

Mariposo's turn

“"It will get passed off as slander against the crown. Maternius' people are fiercely loyal."”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +1)

Mariposo

Mariposo

It will get passed off as slander against the crown. Maternius’s people are fiercely loyal.

The ruined shrine rises through the mist, its roof split open to the gray sky. Veyran stops beneath a fallen saint’s arch and considers the stones ahead.

Veyran

Veyran

Yes. Many will call it slander before they read a single line. Loyalty is easier than admitting the crown purchased silence.

He draws the ledger from beneath his robes but keeps it wrapped, glancing back toward the jungle trail. The shrine’s cracked altar offers shelter, not safety.

Veyran

Veyran

So we do not ask Maternius to trust us. We show the names to people who fear being named beside the Comptroller.

Veyran kneels beside the altar and clears damp leaves from a shallow stone recess. Beneath them, old wax and fragments of parchment suggest the shrine once kept records of its own.

Veyran

Veyran

Let the loyal defend the crown loudly. Every denial gives us another voice to place beside the facts.
