Coldcock

Before Mariposo can reach the door, it opens. Coldcock enters the Brilliant Beard, a tall, broad-shouldered middle-aged woman with weathered brown skin, close-cropped gray hair, a scarred cheek, and a dark wool officer’s coat, with Arthur, a slim young adult man with pale skin, tousled auburn hair, and a narrow face, dressed in a brown wool tunic and cream-trimmed aide’s cloak, close behind, a sealed warrant held visibly in the aide’s hand.

Tyrrus moves into the passage at once, his towering cobalt frame barring the way. Behind him, the client’s color drains as he recognizes the captain.

Coldcock

Coldcock

No one leaves. A royal trail of coercion leads beneath this tavern, and I have authority to follow it.

Tyrrus

Tyrrus

Authority is not a password, Captain. Show me the warrant, and explain why my house is being searched.

Arthur

Arthur

The seal is genuine, Tyrrus. It names the cellar and the rooms above it. We are asking for cooperation, not causing a disturbance.

Arthur extends the parchment without crossing the threshold. The client keeps one hand near the necklace and the other near the sealed scrap, suddenly unable to look at either.

Veyran

Veyran

Captain, this is an outrageous misunderstanding. Surely we can discuss the matter privately.

Mariposo's turn

“In the midst of chaos, I disappear into the shadows. A perfect opportunity to sneak into the cellar before they can. Nothing is more important than closing this trace.”

FAILURE (Good Stealth, rolled +0)

The Captain Seals the Tavern

As the client pleads, Mariposo slips behind the curtain and folds into the tavern’s deeper shadows. He moves low, using the commotion around the warrant as cover, and reaches the cellar passage unseen.

Mariposo

Mariposo

The cellar gate is closer than it should be, and every board seems to remember my footsteps.

His fingers find the old iron key, but the lock gives a sharp metallic click in the silence. Before he can turn it, Arthur’s voice carries from the passage mouth.

Arthur

Arthur

Someone is at the cellar gate.

Mariposo jerks the key free and retreats into a narrow alcove, but the movement exposes the red edge of his poncho. The cellar remains shut, and the hidden trace remains untouched.

Coldcock

Coldcock

Do not run. Step into the light, and this becomes cooperation instead of obstruction.

Boots turn toward him. The warrant has not yet reached the cellar, but the chance to enter unseen is gone, and the captain now knows an accomplice is inside the tavern.

Old iron key

Mariposo's turn

“Investigate the room, see if I can't find a way to sneak out of sight and get to the cellar before they do.”

SUCCESS (Good Stealth, rolled +1)

The Captain Seals the Tavern

Mariposo studies the alcove instead of fleeing. A warped panel behind stacked empty casks leaves a finger-wide gap, and the darkness beyond smells of old wine and cold stone.

He presses the panel inward, slipping through as boots enter the passage. The wood settles behind him without a groan, hiding his red poncho from the approaching search.

Arthur

Arthur

Captain, the cellar gate is empty. He must have withdrawn toward the taproom.

While Arthur’s report draws Coldcock’s attention away, Mariposo crawls through the cramped service passage. Dust clings to his sleeves, but the route opens behind the cellar’s eastern wall.

He emerges among shadowed racks before the royal search reaches the gate. The old casks stand in rows, and the third cask on the eastern wall waits exactly where the client promised.

Above, Coldcock’s muffled command and Arthur’s softer answer fade behind stone. Mariposo is out of sight, inside the cellar, with the hidden evidence still undisturbed.

Mariposo's turn

“Search for the evidence.”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

The Captain Seals the Tavern

Mariposo counts the eastern-wall casks by touch, ignoring the cellar’s deeper shadows. The third stands slightly proud of the others, its dust disturbed along one side.

Mariposo

Mariposo

The loose brick is behind this one.

He eases the cask aside without scraping stone. Behind it, a brick shifts beneath his fingers and comes free, revealing a narrow hollow packed with folded parchment.

Mariposo draws out a sealed packet and a thin ledger wrapped in oilskin. The packet bears the same dark noble wax as the scrap upstairs, while the ledger’s pages list payments beside initials and dates.

A glance is enough to show the trail is real: several entries carry the mark of royal offices, and one recent payment is recorded beside the Rhukkhadevata crest.

He tucks the ledger beneath his poncho and keeps the sealed packet in hand. The hollow is empty now, its loose brick set back in place, while the search continues unheard above.

The evidence belongs to Mariposo, concealed against his body and ready to expose whoever planted the trail. The cellar remains dark and still around him.

Mariposo replaces the brick and wipes the dust from its edge. The cellar’s silence holds while voices drift faintly through the floorboards above.

Mariposo

Mariposo

The packet and ledger are secure beneath my poncho.

He retraces the cramped service passage, placing each foot beside his earlier prints. At the hidden panel, he waits as the captain’s boots pass the cellar gate.

The panel opens without a whisper. Mariposo slips behind the stacked casks, then crosses the shadowed edge of the taproom while the bartender keeps the royal party’s attention near the entrance.

A curtain brushes his shoulder, but no head turns. He reaches the back corridor and eases through the tavern’s service door into the cold alley beyond.

The door settles shut behind him. Inside, the search continues around the cellar, while Mariposo stands unseen in the alley with the evidence and the night open before him.

Mariposo's turn

“Find my client.”

The alley offers three exits, but the tavern’s upper windows reveal a thin amber glow behind the private-room curtains. Mariposo watches until a familiar silhouette crosses it.

Mariposo

Mariposo

He never left the room. The search drove him deeper into the tavern.

Finding the rear stair takes longer than it should; cold rain and darkness blur the tavern’s service passages. By the time Mariposo reaches the landing, voices below have shifted rooms.

The private-room door stands ajar. Inside, the client crouches beside the table, his wine-red robe gathered close, his narrow beard wet with sweat. He looks up sharply.

Veyran

Veyran

You found me. Quickly, then. Did you secure the ledger and packet?

Mariposo has found his client, but the search below has consumed precious time and left one uncertainty: no sound reveals whether the royal party has discovered the hidden passage.

Mariposo's turn

“Find my client.”

Mariposo's turn

“Find my client.”

The private-room door stands ajar. Mariposo enters without disguise or apology, carrying the sealed packet and ledger beneath his poncho as the client looks up from beside the table.

Veyran

Veyran

You found me. Good. No more silks, no more charming lies. Tell me the evidence is safe.

The client’s gaze drops to the edge of the ledger beneath Mariposo’s cloth, then returns to his face. Relief loosens his shoulders, though fear still shines at his temples.

Veyran

Veyran

The royal search has not reached this room. We have a narrow window before someone notices I am missing from the cellar.

He rises and closes the door, leaving it unlatched. His hand hovers over the sealed scrap on the table, but he does not touch it.

Veyran

Veyran

Bring them here. Whatever is written in that ledger, we decide together whether it survives the night.

The client waits beside the table, his attention fixed on the concealed evidence. For the moment, Mariposo has found him, and the room is secure.

Bring the evidence to the client

Mariposo's turn

“I reach to the client's hand and gently graze it. "Who are you, anyway? Such a handsome man hiding whatever dark secret you have~" I say. My lashes bat flirtatiously as I gauge him up and down.”

SUCCESS (Fair Oratory, rolled +1)

Mariposo

Mariposo

Who are you, anyway? Such a handsome man hiding whatever dark secret you have~

Mariposo reaches for the client’s hand and grazes it gently. His lashes bat as his gaze travels over the man, turning the cramped room’s tension into a private invitation.

Veyran

Veyran

Veyran. And the secret is darker than a handsome face ought to carry, Rose.

The client’s hand stays beneath Mariposo’s touch instead of withdrawing. His guarded smile softens, and the fear at his temples gives way to wary amusement.

Veyran

Veyran

I am Veyran, a broker of inconvenient truths. The ledger records payments made by royal hands to bury the Rhukkhadevata trail.

He turns his hand beneath Mariposo’s fingers, briefly meeting the caress rather than merely tolerating it. His eyes remain fixed on Mariposo, measuring whether charm has become trust.

Veyran

Veyran

Now you know who I am, and what I risk. Tell me, Rose, will you still help me decide what truth survives tonight?

The name and secret settle plainly between them. Veyran no longer hides the purpose of the evidence, and the packet and ledger remain secure beneath Mariposo’s poncho.

Mariposo's turn

“"So... How are you involved..? What did you do?" I ask, my veneer of flirtation cracking and revealing desperation behind my words.”

Mariposo

So... how are you involved? What did you do?

The question strips the flirtation from the room. Veyran’s amusement fades; his fingers withdraw from Mariposo’s touch and close around the sealed scrap.

Veyran

Veyran

I brokered the trail. I paid for the ledger, bought silence from a royal clerk, and carried the evidence here. That is what I did.

He says it plainly, but the answer stops short of the danger behind it. His thumb worries the wax seal until a hairline crack appears.

Veyran

Veyran

I did not create the payments, and I did not plant the original record. I only made certain it reached someone who could expose it.

The cracked seal reveals a sliver of script beneath: a royal office and a date matching the ledger. Veyran places the packet on the table, offering proof without surrendering every secret.

Veyran

Veyran

Read the packet, and you will know who commissioned the burial. But if you ask me to name my source, I will not.

Mariposo's turn

“"So... How are you involved..? What did you do?" I ask, my veneer of flirtation cracking and revealing desperation behind my words.”

SUCCESS (Fair Oratory, rolled +0)

Mariposo's turn

“"So... How are you involved..? What did you do?" I ask, my veneer of flirtation cracking and revealing desperation behind my words.”

SUCCESS (Fair Oratory, rolled +0)

Veyran breaks the wax and unfolds the packet. His fingers are steady now, but the admission has stripped away his last comfortable distance from the conspiracy.

Veyran

Veyran

The commission came through the Royal Comptroller’s office. The payment ordered the Rhukkhadevata records buried, and the clerk who copied it was bought to look away.

He turns the packet so Mariposo can read the office seal, the date, and the authorization beneath it. The evidence is no longer a promise or rumor.

Veyran

Veyran

That is how I am involved. I moved the proof, paid for its protection, and placed myself between the crown and the truth.

Veyran slides the packet across the table, surrendering its contents but not his guarded posture. His eyes remain fixed on Mariposo, weighing what the confession has purchased.

Veyran

Veyran

You have your answer, Rose. But now you carry my name with the evidence. If you expose me, I will tell the crown who carried it out of this house.

The cost settles between them: Veyran has trusted Mariposo with the truth, and in return has made him part of the secret’s danger. The packet lies open within reach.

Mariposo's turn

“"Did you know you would find that necklace? When you laid with me? Or was our meeting only for exchanges of lust, and its connection to your life a happy accident?" I ask. "And what do you want now?"”

SUCCESS (Fair Oratory, rolled +0)

Mariposo

Mariposo

Did you know you would find that necklace when you laid with me? Or was our meeting only lust, its connection to your life a happy accident? And what do you want now?

Veyran’s guarded posture breaks. He looks from Mariposo to the necklace’s hidden outline beneath the poncho, then back to the open packet between them.

Veyran

Veyran

I knew the crest, not that you carried it. I recognized it when you undressed, and I chose not to ask. Our meeting began as lust. The accident was finding you were part of the truth I was chasing.

He lets the admission stand without softening it. The cracked wax and royal seal remain exposed, while his fingers draw the packet closer to his side.

Veyran

Veyran

Now I want the records carried beyond Maternius and placed before someone the crown cannot purchase. I want the burial broken, and I want you alive long enough to help me do it.

His answer gives Mariposo the truth he demanded, but Veyran’s suspicion hardens into leverage. He has learned the necklace matters personally, and will no longer bargain as though Mariposo is merely hired hands.

Mariposo's turn

“"Did you know you would find that necklace? When you laid with me? Or was our meeting only for exchanges of lust, and its connection to your life a happy accident?" I ask. "And what do you want now?"”

SUCCESS (Fair Oratory, rolled +0)

Veyran’s guarded posture breaks. His eyes move from Mariposo to the necklace hidden beneath the poncho, then settle on the open packet between them.

Veyran

Veyran

I did not know you carried it. I recognized the crest when you undressed, and I chose silence. Our meeting began as lust; finding you tied to the trail was the accident.

He says it plainly, surrendering the last convenient lie between them. The royal seal remains exposed, its authority suddenly smaller than the secret it confirms.

Veyran

Veyran

Now I want the records carried beyond Maternius and placed before someone the crown cannot purchase. I want the burial broken, and I want you alive to help me do it.

The answer is complete, but Mariposo’s question has cost him his disguise. Veyran now knows the necklace is personal, and his bargaining posture hardens into leverage.

Veyran

Veyran

I have told you the truth. In return, you owe me candor about that crest, and you will not vanish with my evidence before we choose our way out.

He nudges the packet toward Mariposo, offering proof while keeping the ledger’s fate tied to their uneasy alliance. Below, a door closes and royal voices shift nearer.

Mariposo's turn

“"Why do you want this? What point is there in following the trail of an old-dead kingdom?"”

SUCCESS (Fair Oratory, rolled +0)

Mariposo

Mariposo

Why do you want this? What point is there in following the trail of an old-dead kingdom?

Veyran studies him as the royal voices draw nearer below. The question strips away profit and lust alike, leaving only the reason he has risked his name, coin, and freedom.

Veyran

Veyran

Because the kingdom is dead, but the people who profited from burying its history are not. The same hands still rule Maternius, and they will keep using that buried crime.

He taps the packet’s royal seal, then the ledger beneath Mariposo’s poncho. His voice lowers, not from shame, but from the care of a man naming a danger that can still answer back.

Veyran

Veyran

I want the trail followed because the Rhukkhadevata were erased to protect living power. If their records surface, the crown loses its clean story, and the buried names can be restored.

Veyran

Veyran

That is my reason. You have earned the full answer, but your question also costs you the luxury of withholding the crest’s meaning. Tell me what it means, or our alliance ends here.

The answer is plain: Veyran seeks justice against the living officials who profited from the Rhukkhadevata’s erasure, not relics from a dead kingdom. His demand makes the price of trust unmistakable.

Mariposo's turn

“"The crest... Means that the Rhukkhadevata people are not long-dead. They are alive. At least, one of them is... Me," I admitted.”

SUCCESS (Fair Oratory, rolled +0)

Mariposo

Mariposo

The crest... means the Rhukkhadevata people are not long-dead. They are alive. At least, one of them is... me.

Veyran goes still. The admission crosses the room like a drawn blade, and for one suspended breath even the royal voices below seem distant.

Veyran

Veyran

You are Rhukkhadevata. Not an heir, not a sympathizer. One of the living people the crown tried to erase.

His suspicion becomes certainty, but certainty costs Mariposo the last shelter of anonymity. Veyran reaches for the ledger, keeping the evidence between them like a bond and a chain.

Veyran

Veyran

Then you are no longer merely carrying the truth for me. You are its witness, and the crown would pay dearly to silence you.

Veyran

Veyran

I will not expose you tonight. But from this moment, Rose, your secret is part of our bargain, and I expect candor in return.

Below, a floorboard groans beneath approaching boots. Veyran folds the packet shut, accepting Mariposo’s truth while claiming leverage over the man who revealed it.

“"The crest... Means that the Rhukkhadevata people are not long-dead. They are alive. At least, one of them is... Me," I admitted.”

SUCCESS (Fair Oratory, rolled +3)

Veyran absorbs the confession without flinching. Surprise passes through his face, followed by something more dangerous: recognition of what Mariposo’s survival makes possible.

Veyran

Veyran

Then the crown’s lie has a living witness. You are not a relic, Rose. You are proof they failed.

He draws the packet and ledger together, protecting them from the restless air beyond the door. His voice remains low, but his purpose has sharpened.

Veyran

Veyran

I will not sell your name. Not tonight, and not for any crown’s price. But I need to know whether Maryam survived as well.

The question lands softly, yet Veyran watches Mariposo with renewed care. He has guessed there may be another survivor, but he cannot know the answer from the confession alone.

Veyran

Veyran

We leave separately if we must. But the records need a witness, and you deserve to decide what happens to your people’s truth.

Veyran unlatches the door and listens. The corridor beyond holds only the muffled search and the rain’s thin tapping, while the evidence remains secured between them.

“I rush to him, and begin kissing him. "The patrol will not question us if we are patrons of this inn," I said, quickly closing and locking the door. "Take me once more, we will pretend to be lovers doing as lovers do," I said, a fool-proof plan.”

Mariposo crosses the room in a rush and kisses Veyran before the man can finish listening at the door. The surprise lasts only a breath before Veyran answers.

Mariposo

Mariposo

The patrol will not question us if we are patrons of this inn. Take me once more, and we will pretend to be lovers doing as lovers do.

Still holding Veyran close, Mariposo shuts the door and turns the key. The latch clicks firmly, sealing their private story away from the corridor.

Veyran

Veyran

A fool-proof plan? No. But a convincing one, Rose. If they open that door, they will find exactly what we claim.

Veyran draws the packet and ledger beneath the bedclothes, then gathers Mariposo against him with practiced urgency. The muffled patrol voices pass the room without stopping.

The room settles into staged intimacy, close enough to satisfy any listener beyond the locked door. For the moment, the evidence remains hidden and the search moves on.

Mariposo turns from the door and lets his gaze travel over Veyran without coyness. The locked room suddenly feels less like a hiding place than a chosen one.

Veyran catches the meaning in that deliberate inspection. His guarded expression softens, and he sets aside the practiced urgency of their false affair.

Veyran

Veyran

That was not for the patrol. You mean it.

He steps close, one hand finding Mariposo’s waist while the other checks the bedclothes, keeping the packet and ledger hidden. Then he kisses him with unfeigned hunger.

Veyran

Veyran

No bargain, no audience, and no pretending. I will take you because you asked me to.

Veyran draws him down, and the room’s silence fills with the sounds of genuine intimacy. The evidence stays concealed as the pretense finally falls away.

Later, the lamp burns low. Veyran lies beside Mariposo with one hand resting near the hidden records, his trust now personal as well as dangerous.

Mariposo's turn

“Admire his naked body.”

The low lamplight traces Veyran’s bare form, from the strength in his shoulders to the guarded softness that remains even in repose. Mariposo takes his time looking.

Veyran notices the unhurried attention and turns slightly toward him, making no attempt to cover himself. The old tension in his face gives way to quiet amusement.

Veyran

Veyran

You look at me as though you have discovered another secret.

His fingers brush the hidden packet beneath the bedclothes, then return to Mariposo’s hip. The gesture keeps the evidence close while inviting the admiration to continue.

Veyran

Veyran

No need to be careful with your eyes, Rose. I am not ashamed of being seen by you.

Veyran settles back against the pillows, openly offering himself to Mariposo’s gaze. Beyond the locked door, the tavern murmurs on, but nothing intrudes upon their chosen quiet.

Rose can take control of Mariposo's body.

Rest, Rose. If they come, they will hear two lovers sleeping, not conspirators plotting beneath a royal roof.

Veyran’s fingers move slowly through Mariposo’s hair. No boots approach, no fist strikes the door, and the patrol’s voices remain distant beyond the walls.

Rose

Rose

They will not interrupt this. For now, the night belongs to us.

Held against Veyran’s warmth, Mariposo waits. The hidden records remain undisturbed, and the room’s quiet endures without interrogation.
