Dawn’s promised privacy ends with the hour turning dark. Coldcock remains behind at the Brilliant Beard, while Veyran slips into the back streets beside Mariposo, the packet and ledger hidden beneath his robes, the Rhukkhadevata necklace warm against Mariposo’s chest.
Tavern traffic covers their departure with laughter, drunken singing, and the clatter of carts. They pass beneath Maternius’s overhanging balconies, keeping to alleys where watch-lanterns thin and wet cobbles shine like black glass.

Veyran
The records are safe for now. Keep the necklace hidden, and do not trust anyone who offers an easier road out.
A shadowed archway waits ahead. Within it, Carmin, a young adult man with warm brown skin, close-cropped black hair, a lean build, and a patched charcoal cloak stands alone, his mechanical arm lowered while a faint hardlight sigil burns above it, blue-white against the masonry.

Carmin
Please do not run. I know the records are moving, and I can guide you beyond the city watch before the gates close.
Veyran stops beneath the archway, one hand pressing protectively over the hidden packet. The prince’s sigil flickers across his face, making his royal connection impossible to mistake.

Carmin
I am asking you to choose quickly. If the watch sees me with you, the evidence becomes a royal scandal before it becomes anyone’s salvation.
Veyran's turn“"Hmm... You, you're that Vitalitus kid, aren't you? Why in the world are you helping us?" I ask, pure curiosity, with no hint of distrust betraying my voice.”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +3)

Veyran
Hmm... You, you're that Vitalitus kid, aren't you? Why in the world are you helping us?
Carmin flinches at the recognition, then lowers his mechanical arm. The hardlight sigil dims, leaving the rain-dark archway and his anxious face in plain view.

Carmin
Yes. Prince Carmin Vitalitus, though please do not say that loudly. I am helping because I saw the warrant for this search, and it was altered after the Royal Comptroller's order.
His fingers tighten around the edge of his cloak. The blue-white construct above his prosthetic reshapes into a tiny map of Maternius, marking the watch routes in trembling lines.

Carmin
The records prove someone in my family's government buried your people's history. I cannot undo that from inside the palace, but I can refuse to help bury it again.

Carmin
There is a disused postern beneath the old mint. My seal will open it, and I can make the watch believe you were sent there under royal escort. You will be beyond the gates before they understand what happened.
The hardlight map fixes on a narrow western lane, then forms a small royal seal in Carmin's palm. He offers it to Veyran, giving the escape route and his authority into their hands.

Veyran playfully grabs me by my scruff and pulls me up, apologizing for my behavior.
Mariposo's turn“"Thank you... I believe you have a kind heart, young prince. Hopefully we can meet under better circumstances, eh?~" I ask, a coy flirtatiousness in my voice rising. "Maybe in my bed?~" I ask, leaning forward.”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

Mariposo
Thank you... I believe you have a kind heart, young prince. Hopefully we can meet under better circumstances, eh? Maybe in my bed?
Mariposo leans toward Carmin, coyness softening the danger in the rain-dark archway. The prince’s offered seal remains suspended between them, forgotten for one startled breath.

Carmin
I... that is very kind of you to say. I mean, not that I am refusing. I am only surprised. Please do not think I dislike the idea.
Carmin’s ears redden. His hardlight map wavers above the mechanical arm, and the western lane briefly bends into a useless knot before he forces the sigil straight again.
Veyran catches Mariposo by the scruff and playfully hauls him upright, drawing him back from the prince with an apologetic tilt of his head.

Veyran
Forgive him, Prince Carmin. He becomes incorrigible whenever danger makes him feel invincible.
The flirtation lands despite the interruption. Carmin keeps glancing at Mariposo, visibly flustered but smiling, while Mariposo’s carefully held composure slips into a brief, undeniable hesitation.
Rose can take control of Mariposo's body.
Mariposo's turn“"Alright, let's go. Veyran, you sure about stickin' with me? I've been a pretty... One man one survivor kind of schtick for awhile. I ain't gonna promise to keep you safe or anything out there," I said. I suppressed a shiver at the thought of returning to the harsh wilds outside kingdom walls. I ESPECIALLY repress the memories of me and Maryam growing up together in the deserts of the winds.”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Mariposo
Alright, let's go. Veyran, you sure about sticking with me? I've been a pretty... one-man, one-survivor kind of act. I won't promise to keep you safe out there.
The desert rises in memory: white glare, wind-scoured stone, and Maryam beside him, a young woman with sun-browned skin, long black braids, a lean build, and a sand-colored robe, beside him beneath a merciless sky. Mariposo closes the door on it, holding the recollection down until only rain and black cobbles remain.

Rose
There. Buried deep enough. Keep walking, darling.
Rose’s pressure curls through Mariposo’s limbs, eager and possessive, but Veyran’s hand catches his scruff and playfully hauls him upright before he can lunge toward any distraction.

Veyran
I am sure. I cannot promise to keep you safe either, but I can promise not to abandon you while the records remain threatened.
He releases Mariposo with an apologetic tilt of his head, then steps beneath the archway toward the western lane. The alliance is no longer a convenience spoken in a locked room.

Carmin
Then please follow me. I can get you beyond the walls, and I will try very hard not to make either of you regret trusting me.
Carmin closes his fingers around the royal seal. Hardlight gathers into a narrow blue-white path across the wet stones, pointing toward the old mint and the city’s darkened edge.
Rose can take control of Mariposo's body.
Mariposo's turn“Follow Carmin, while being keenly aware of my surroundings.”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled -2)

Mariposo follows Carmin’s blue-white path through the western lanes, keeping his constrained wrist close while his eyes sweep balconies, gutters, shuttered doors, and every watch-lantern.
He catches the signs of pursuit: a fresh heelprint in wet silt, a shutter settling after movement, and one lantern briefly hooded near the square. The inspection costs them several minutes, but reveals no watcher on their chosen route.

Mariposo
The hooded lantern could be a signal, or only a wind-tossed flame.

Veyran
Keep moving. Uncertainty is cheaper than being recognized in the open.
Carmin turns beneath a collapsed arcade and guides them down a stair slick with rain. At its foot, the old mint’s buried postern waits in a wall of black stone.

Carmin
We are here. Please stay close while I open it.
Carmin presses the royal seal to the worn lock. Hardlight threads through the masonry, and the postern opens onto the mint’s deserted underpass. Mariposo reaches it safely, though the uncertain lantern remains behind them.
Rose can take control of Mariposo's body.
Mariposo's turn“"Thanks again, Carmy, I hope we meet again!~" I said with a cheerful wink as me and Veynar descend into the darkness.”
SUCCESS (Fair Oratory, rolled +1)

Mariposo
Thanks again, Carmy. I hope we meet again!~
Mariposo gives Carmin a cheerful wink, then turns with Veyran toward the descending passage. The prince’s hardlight path glows across their faces as they enter the darkness.

Carmin
I hope so too, Rose. Stay alive until then, please.
Carmin remains at the postern, one hand resting on the royal seal while the blue-white sigil dims behind the departing pair. Rain whispers through the broken arcade above.

Veyran
Carmy? You collect dangerous friends quickly. Come on, before your new admirer decides to follow us.
Veyran leads Mariposo down the slick steps, keeping close enough to guide him through the buried mint. Behind them, the postern closes, leaving Maternius and its watch beyond the stone.
“"Why not? I'm putting together a real party, here. I'm sure Tyrrus would have come with us had I offered him the chance..." I said, musing on about this fun new adventure I'm embarking on. "You know, I've been meaning to get out of Maternius, anyway..."”
