The flooded cistern stair plunges into black water. Mariposo and Veyran reach its lower stones as Carmin stumbles from a side passage, breathless, mud streaking his charcoal cloak and mechanical arm.

Carmin

Carmin

The postern was watched after we left. I doubled back through the mint, but they followed me. The water is rising, and the upper passage is blocked.

Steel scrapes stone behind him. A lean middle-aged woman in a rain-dark royal coat enters with a drawn sword, her cropped iron hair plastered to a severe face, her weather-pale skin marked by a scar through one eyebrow. A warrant hangs from her belt.

The Royal Warrant-Bearer

The Royal Warrant-Bearer

Prince Carmin Vitalitus, surrender the seal. You two, identify yourselves and come up the stairs. The crown requires the records, not merely your arrest.

Veyran

Veyran

That is a curious distinction for a warrant-bearer to make. What does the crown intend to do with witnesses who cannot be displayed?

Carmin

Carmin

Serran, you were ordered to secure the fugitives, not drown them. Lower the sword and let us pass.

Serran advances one step. Water swirls around the lowest stones, sealing the retreat, while Veyran keeps himself between Mariposo and the blade. Carmin’s hardlight seal flickers, searching for another door.

Rose surges through Mariposo’s limbs, urging him toward the unseen captain with hungry insistence. The water rises around his ankles, and Serran’s sword bars the only dry approach.

Rose

Rose

Let me advance on Coldcock, darling. Make her remember exactly how badly we wanted her.

Mariposo’s sly, fawning gaze fixes on Serran instead, his nose flaring with Rose’s hunger. Before he can move farther, Veyran catches his scruff and pulls him upright.

Veyran

Veyran

Forgive him. The water, the danger, and his worst impulses have made him incorrigible. He is not surrendering to you.

Serran. Once, I was an old spell-blade sorcerer who hunted the crown’s enemies beneath Maternius’s night sky. Your people made a legend of me, and now the legend stands before you.

Serran lowers her blade a fraction and turns her scarred gaze toward Carmin. The water climbs another inch as her warrant catches the dim blue glow of his seal.

The Royal Warrant-Bearer

The Royal Warrant-Bearer

Tell them, prince. Tell them how you lured them into this cistern, and why you meant to take the records for yourself.

Carmin

Carmin

She is right. I altered the route and led you here. I meant to seize the records before the palace could, but I never intended the water to rise this fast.

Veyran’s hand remains locked in Mariposo’s scruff, keeping him behind his shoulder. Carmin’s admission hangs beneath the dripping stone while Serran waits for their choice.

Veyran's turn

“"Go alone, Mariposo. The Rhukkhadevata will not die here. Live on, and I will hold them off." I said, raising my hands. Magic symbols floated around them as I channeled my arcane energies.”

Go alone, Mariposo. The Rhukkhadevata will not die here. Live on, and I will hold them off.

Veyran raises both hands. Arcane symbols bloom around his fingers, pale and intricate, then knit across the flooded stones into a trembling ward before Serran’s drawn sword.

Mariposo

Mariposo

Veyran, no. You know what she is. I will not leave you here.

The ward flares as Serran cuts into it. The blow scatters sparks and drives her back, while Mariposo reluctantly turns toward the side passage, his face tight with refusal.

Carmin

Carmin

You heard him. Go. I serve the crown, but I will not waste this opening.

Mariposo disappears into the side passage, carrying the living name of his people into darkness. Veyran remains behind, symbols circling his raised hands as the barrier seals him apart with Serran.

Then stand, Veyran. Your magic has bought him escape, and your life will pay the crown’s account.

Veyran's turn

“I take a step back and let the barrier disperse suddenly, shooting a bolt of arcane energy straight for the woman's chest. In the lapse of attack, I turn to the prince and try to plead for his help.”

Veyran steps back and lets the trembling ward collapse. Before Serran can recover her stance, he thrusts both hands forward, hurling a pale bolt through the falling symbols.

The bolt veers as Veyran’s occult pattern breaks apart. Serran twists aside; the energy scorches her coat and bursts against the cistern wall, blasting loose a stone grille beneath the waterline.

Veyran

Veyran

Carmin, help me. You brought us here, and you can still get us out. Open that passage.

The broken grille reveals a narrow drainage tunnel, its black current running away beneath the cistern. Water surges through the opening, offering a perilous route below the warrant-bearer’s reach.

Carmin

Carmin

I can open it, but the current will separate us. Veyran, get to the grille. I will hold the seal against the lock.

Serran lunges through the thinning spray, sword raised, but the failed bolt has forced her around the new opening. Carmin’s seal flares blue-white against the submerged mechanism.

You mistake a crack in the wall for escape, Veyran. I have hunted sorcerers through narrower graves.

The pale bolt’s force tears through the submerged grille and leaves Serran’s coat smoking at the shoulder. The broken opening gapes beneath the racing water, wide enough for a desperate escape.

Veyran

Veyran

Carmin, help me. You brought us here, and you can still get us out. Open that passage.

Veyran reaches the grille as Carmin presses his seal against the submerged lock. Blue-white light threads through the mechanism, and ancient tumblers grind apart beneath the current.

Carmin

Carmin

It is open. Go now, Veyran. The tunnel will carry you beyond the cistern, even if it separates us.

The drainage tunnel yawns fully open, swallowing the cistern’s water into a roaring black current. Serran steadies herself against the wall, her sword lowered as the surge cuts between her and the passage.

The Royal Warrant-Bearer

The Royal Warrant-Bearer

Run, then. I know the old channels, and I will find where they return. Your spell has bought you distance, not freedom.

Veyran grips the grille’s edge and plunges into the current, vanishing into the drainage dark as the water tears at his robes. Behind him, Carmin’s seal flares once, then the lock collapses shut.

Director's note

Up ahead, a faint orange glow suddenly flickers into view.

Veyran's turn

“I squint and glare at the light. "Mariposo..?" I quietly ask, as I begin to approach.”

SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +2)

Veyran

Veyran

Mariposo...?

Veyran squints against the dim orange glow and wades toward it, one hand grazing the slick tunnel wall. The current drags at his robes but does not turn him aside.

The light reveals Mariposo sprawled on a shelf of black stone beyond the strongest current. His wet hair clings to his face, and one hand grips the necklace beneath his soaked clothing.

Mariposo

Mariposo

Veyran...? Is that you?

Mariposo lifts his head and turns toward Veyran, alive and conscious. The orange glow comes from a small clay lamp wedged in the stone above him, marking a dry ledge beyond the flood.

Veyran reaches the ledge and catches Mariposo by the forearm, pulling him clear of the racing water. Behind them, the drainage tunnel roars toward darkness, but they are together again.
