Brother Caldus

Near the fork beyond the clear spring, tall ash grass whispers against the broken stones. A soot-streaked middle-aged man steps from it, lean beneath a weathered brown robe, with a cracked handbell hanging at his belt.

Brother Caldus

Brother Caldus

Brother Caldus, of the ash monasteries. Sister Elian has begun refusing arrivals at the monastery gate.

The bell bears the same blue wax seal as Pando’s message, but its clapper is packed tightly with fresh black soil. Caldus keeps one hand near it without touching.

Tessa

Tessa

That seal matches Captain Vey’s message. Why would a monastery bell carry soil inside it?

Brother Caldus

Brother Caldus

Because it rang beneath the ash chapel yesterday, though no hand pulled it. Since then, Sister Elian has barred the gate and sent no explanation.

Tessa shifts the provision bundle higher on her shoulder and glances toward the mountain road. The main pass lies east, while the shepherd trail bends toward a dark line of ash trees.

Tessa

Tessa

He may know why we carry the message, Pando. We should hear what happened before choosing the fork.

Yes, we heard. We are not going to see Sister Elian. We are heading to the spring.

Pando gives Tessa a small, low gesture. She slips behind his shoulder as he turns from the dark ash trees and guides them toward the clear spring.

Tessa

Tessa

Understood. I will stay close and keep the message covered.

They leave the fork without approaching the monastery road. Pando’s quiet movement gets them to the spring, but his heel dislodges a dry stone that clicks sharply across the broken path.

Brother Caldus

Brother Caldus

You mean to avoid the gate. I heard that stone, and I know which trail you chose.

Caldus does not pursue. He remains beside the ash grass, one hand hovering near the sealed bell, while Tessa reaches the spring behind Pando.

Tessa

Tessa

The monastery knows we are leaving the road, but we reached the spring safely.

“I get close and whisper to Tessa "Seems we'll need to be vigilant from here on out"”

Seems we’ll need to be vigilant from here on out.

Pando moves close enough for the words to remain between him and Tessa, keeping his voice low while the spring murmurs beside the broken path.

Tessa

Tessa

Yes. I will watch the trail, the grass, and anyone who follows us. The message stays covered until we know who can be trusted.

Tessa adjusts the bundle beneath her cloak and studies the open ground around the spring. Brother Caldus remains back by the ash grass, listening without approaching.

Brother Caldus

Brother Caldus

Vigilance is wise beyond the fork. The monastery has had watchers on its roads since the bell began ringing, though I do not know who placed them.

Tessa

Tessa

Then we will not give anyone an easy approach. We can fill our waterskins and leave by the shepherd trail before choosing where to rest.

Tessa kneels at the clear spring and begins filling the waterskins. Pando surveys the surrounding grass and stones while the mountain wind carries ash-scented silence from the trees.

“I pull out the map and review our route, "if we continue down the side route, we'll get to the ruins, and I doubt they'll follow us."”

If we continue down the side route, we’ll get to the ruins, and I doubt they’ll follow us.

Pando unfolds the marked route map beside the spring and traces the shepherd trail past the clear water. The side route bends west through broken stone country before joining the ruins’ old approach.

Pando

Pando

The side route keeps us away from the monastery road and its watchers.

Tessa

Tessa

You are right. The ruins give us shelter, and anyone watching the main trail would have to search farther to find us.

Tessa finishes filling the waterskins and leans over the map. The route is longer than the direct road, but its turns and scrub-covered stones offer concealment before the ruined walls.

Brother Caldus

Brother Caldus

I have not walked that side path recently, but the monastery watchers favor the eastern road. If you seek distance from the gate, the ruins may provide it.

Tessa

Tessa

Then we take the side route. We can rest at the ruins, keep the message covered, and decide our next move from there.

Pando leaves clear spring behind and arrives at the ruins.

“I put the map away and take Tessa by the hand, "Come, let's get there fast."”

The side route ends at the ruins beneath a leaning ridge of gray stone. Wind moves through roofless halls, carrying cold ash and the faint smell of rain.

Pando and Tessa arrive together at the broken outer court. Their quick passage has left the spring and Brother Caldus far behind, hidden beyond the scrub and stone.

Tessa

Tessa

We made it before anyone followed. The walls give us shelter, and I can still feel the message safe beneath my cloak.

A collapsed arch frames the inner ruin, where old ash has gathered in a perfect ring around a dry stone basin. Fresh footprints cross the dust and vanish beneath the fallen masonry.

Tessa

Tessa

Those prints are recent. Someone came here after the last rain, but they did not leave by the path we used.

Pando

Pando

The ruins have another entrance.

Tessa lowers her voice and shifts closer, watching the shadowed gaps between the walls. From somewhere below the courtyard, three slow knocks answer through the stone.

“"Tessa, stay hidden, I'll check out the footsteps" I point over to an arch where she can hide, "If I'm not back in 15 min, start to sneak your way to sister Elian"”

Tessa, stay hidden. I’ll check out the footsteps. If I’m not back in fifteen minutes, start sneaking toward Sister Elian.

Pando points toward a broken arch overlooking the courtyard. Tessa slips behind its fallen stones, keeping her cloak and the blue-sealed message concealed.

Tessa

Tessa

I understand. I will wait fifteen minutes, then take the safest route toward Sister Elian.

Pando crosses to the fresh footprints and studies their edges, depth, and direction. They belong to two people who entered from the ridge, carrying something heavy between them.

The tracks pass the dry basin, then end at a slab of fallen masonry. Beneath its lower edge, dust is disturbed around a narrow gap descending into darkness.

From below, the three knocks sound again, followed by a faint scrape. Pando can now tell the footprints lead to the hidden passage, not away from the ruins.

Tessa

Tessa

Pando? I heard the knocks again. Do you know where they came from?

“"Stay hidden and remember what I said." I crouch down and follow the footsteps”

Tessa presses herself deeper behind the fallen stones, keeping the blue-sealed message concealed. Pando crouches and follows the disturbed dust toward the masonry gap.

Pando

The tracks are fresh, and both sets lead below.

He slips beneath the slab and descends a narrow stair cut into the ruin’s foundation. The three knocks sound again, clearer now, from a chamber below.

The passage opens into a low vault lit by a hooded oil lamp. Two middle-aged men in ash-gray traveling cloaks stand beside a heavy wooden chest, their boots marked with the same dust.

Brother Oren

Brother Oren

The passage is clear. Whoever made those tracks has followed us down.

The second man rests one hand on the chest but does not open it. Between them, fresh scrape marks show where they dragged it across the vault floor.

“I draw my sword,"Who are you, and why are you here?"”

Pando draws the shadow-sheathed longsword in one smooth motion. The blade catches the hooded lamp, and its point settles toward the two men without touching either.

Pando

Pando

Who are you, and why are you here?

The first cloaked man lifts both hands away from the chest. His companion follows, leaving the heavy box closed between them as the vault’s silence tightens.

Brother Oren

Brother Oren

I am Brother Oren, a lay keeper from the ash monasteries. We came for what is inside that chest before the watchers found it.

Davren

Davren

My name is Davren. The chest holds copied chapel records and a sealed warning for Sister Elian. We dragged it here to keep it out of the monastery’s hands.

Brother Oren

Brother Oren

We are not with the watchers, and we did not summon the bell. Someone has been searching the monastery archives, taking names and replacing pages.

Behind the men, the chest bears a broken ash-colored seal. Fresh gouges surround its lock, while a narrow stair continues beyond the vault into deeper darkness.

“"What's inside the chest?"”

What's inside the chest?

Pando keeps the longsword leveled, but his voice carries no threat beyond the question. Brother Oren studies him, then gives a guarded nod.

Brother Oren

Brother Oren

Records taken from the ash chapel: names of visitors, watch schedules, and pages copied before the originals vanished. The warning is sealed beneath them.

Davren

Davren

We can show you. Do not strike the seal. If it breaks, Sister Elian may never learn who has been searching her archives.

Davren kneels and turns the chest so its broken ash seal faces the lamp. He lifts the lid carefully, revealing bundled parchment, a monastery map, and a blue-wax packet.

Brother Oren

Brother Oren

The map marks every place the missing pages concerned. The packet names the person who ordered the copies, but we dared not carry it to the gate.

Davren

Davren

The name is Sister Elian’s predecessor, Abbot Merrow. He disappeared three nights ago, and someone has used his authority since.

Brother Oren

Brother Oren

These are the copied visitor rolls, chapel watch schedules, and pages taken before the originals vanished. The map shows where each missing record belonged.

Davren

Davren

The packet names Abbot Merrow as the authority behind the copies. He disappeared three nights ago, but someone continues using his seal and access.

Beneath the map, Davren reveals a second mark: a small ash sigil beside a concealed stair on the monastery plan. It identifies a way into the chapel archive without passing the gate.

Brother Oren

Brother Oren

That route is your advantage. It reaches the archive from below, and the missing pages were last recorded there. If you seek answers, you can enter unseen.

Davren

Davren

We will place the warning and map in your hands, if you swear only to show them to Sister Elian or someone she trusts.
