The household returns beneath the twin stars. Pando and Avaris lead Tessa and Lumen along the open path, while Rowan arrives from Ashmill with a cooled token wrapped in cloth.

Iria waits beside the low stone table, her open hands empty. Rowan is a travel-worn young adult woman with cropped brown hair, a patched green cloak, and ash dust along her boots.

Rowan

Rowan

I carried the token here after it cooled. I want to meet the person who can offer refuge without claiming ownership.

Iria

Iria

Then you have come to the right grove. I offer a place to rest, not a chain, and you may leave whenever you choose.

Iria steps no closer. Tessa, Lumen, and Avaris remain near Pando, quiet and visibly unguarded, leaving Rowan the full width of the path between them.

Rowan

Rowan

I have been offered shelter before. The offer changed after I entered. What makes yours different?

Iria

Iria

Nothing makes it safe except your ability to test it. Ask what you need, keep the token, and decide from the answer whether you wish to come nearer.

Secure a freely chosen refuge for Rowan

“Does the cooled token carry a hidden claim?”

The cloth around the cooled token darkens with a fine gray sheen. A buried mark emerges across its face, shaped like a closed hand around a small doorway.

Rowan

Rowan

That was not visible when I carried it. The token does not merely identify me. It claims me as transferred property of the refuge that issued it.

Iria

Iria

Yes. The hidden claim binds the bearer to custody, not to safety. Whoever accepts the token is recorded as owing obedience to the old chain.

The mark tightens briefly, and a second line appears beneath it: shelter granted only while the bearer remains assigned. The words fade when Rowan loosens her grip.

Rowan

Rowan

Then I was carrying a claim against myself. I will not place it in anyone’s refuge until I know it can be broken without transferring the claim elsewhere.

Iria

Iria

You do not need to surrender it here. We can preserve the evidence, name the claim plainly, and build your shelter without accepting its authority.

Tessa’s notebook opens beside Pando, while Lumen keeps her distance and Avaris watches the token’s fading mark. The grove remains open around Rowan, offering space rather than another hand closing around her.

Pando glances over Tessa’s shoulder at the open notebook. Her careful lines record the token’s hidden claim, the words about assigned shelter, and Rowan’s refusal to trade one authority for another.

Below the copied phrases, Tessa has written three questions: who issued the claim, how it can be broken without transfer, and what shelter can remain voluntary.

Tessa

Tessa

I’m keeping the wording exact, Dad. If anyone later says the token meant protection, the page will show what it actually demanded.

The final line is written more boldly: evidence may be preserved, but no bearer becomes safer by surrendering the right to leave.

Tessa

Tessa

I also wrote that Rowan keeps the token. It belongs to her experience, even if the old refuge tried to make it belong to them.

Tessa closes the notebook halfway, leaving her thumb between the pages so the record can be reopened without hiding it. Around them, the grove remains open and unclaimed.

✓ Quest Accepted

Remove the token’s hidden custody claim

− Scene Quest Removed

Secure a freely chosen refuge for Rowan

“I try to remember the clay tokens I got from the sealed container in detail”

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +0)

Pando closes his eyes and reconstructs the sealed container piece by piece: the clay tokens’ weight, their dry grit, and the faint warmth left by the reliquary’s inner ward.

Pando

Pando

There were three tokens, each thumb-sized and deliberately fired, with a different mark pressed into its face.

The first bears an open doorway surrounded by three short rays. The second shows a linked ring broken at one point, its edges clean rather than damaged. The third carries two hands separated by a narrow line.

He remembers the clay colors too: pale ash, dark river-brown, and red ochre. None bears a personal name, seal, or command phrase. Their undersides carry matching shallow grooves, as if meant to fit a circular holder.

Tessa

Tessa

I’ll add those details exactly. The symbols sound like passage, interrupted connection, and separation by consent, but I’ll mark that as interpretation, not fact.

Rowan

Rowan

That last mark matters. Hands divided by a line could mean refusal, release, or a boundary the old refuge was never allowed to cross.

The memory settles completely: three clay tokens, three distinct faces, matching grooves beneath, and no wording that grants ownership. Tessa records the description while Rowan keeps her own token wrapped in cloth.

“"What mark is on the token you hold?"”

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Pando

Pando

What mark is on the token you hold?

Pando studies the token through the loosened cloth. Its face bears a closed hand wrapped around a small doorway, the fingers forming a deliberate seal rather than an embrace.

Fine gray lines ring the symbol. They converge at the doorway’s threshold, where a second, smaller line turns inward like a claim directing whoever carries it back toward custody.

Rowan

Rowan

A closed hand around a doorway. I thought it meant protection, but now I can see the fingers are enclosing the bearer, not guarding the entrance.

The mark’s meaning becomes unmistakable under Pando’s scrutiny: passage offered only within a boundary, with the bearer contained by whoever controls the refuge. No personal name or consent mark appears anywhere on the clay.

Rowan

Rowan

So it is a custody mark disguised as welcome. I will keep it as evidence, but I will not let it define where I belong.

“"Mind if I see it real quick?"”

Pando

Mind if I see it real quick?

Rowan

Rowan

No. You may examine it while I hold the choice of what happens next.

Rowan loosens the cloth and places the token in Pando’s open palm. Its fired clay is cool, thumb-sized, and heavier on the sealed face than its plain underside suggests.

Close inspection reveals the closed hand is pressed into the clay, not painted on. Its fingers converge around the doorway, while the gray ring cuts across the threshold and turns inward toward the bearer.

Pando

Pando

The mark is a transfer mechanism, not a simple ward. The underside grooves are made to lock into a holder.

Along the underside, three shallow grooves form a matching pattern with the other tokens’ bases. There is no hidden name, spoken command, or consent mark, only a channel designed to return the bearer toward custody.

“I infuse the token with starlight”

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -1)

An Offer Without Chains
Rowan
Rowan

Pando cups the token between both hands and draws a quiet thread of starlight through its fired clay. The silver glow follows every groove beneath the sealed face.

The light reaches the inward-turning channel and reveals its whole design: not a command, but a route meant to pull a bearer back toward a matching holder.

Pando changes the starlight’s pattern at the threshold. The gray ring loosens, the closed hand separates from the doorway, and the transfer channel opens into harmless radiance.

The underside grooves remain physical, but they no longer answer the old claim. The token can still be preserved as evidence, yet it cannot direct Rowan or return her toward custody.

Rowan

Rowan

The mark is gone from the inside. I can still see what it was, but it no longer feels like it knows where I belong.

The starlight fades from the clay, leaving a clean broken ring where the inward channel had been. Rowan takes the token back, its evidence intact and its claim neutralized.

Pando

There, now do you believe what Iria speaks is true?

Rowan studies the clean break in the token’s ring, then turns it over in her palm. The grooves remain, but nothing within them answers or pulls.

Rowan

Rowan

Yes. Iria offered shelter without taking this from me, and you proved the old claim can be removed without replacing it with your own.

Rowan closes her fingers around the neutralized token, her suspicion easing but not vanishing. She steps toward Iria while keeping the evidence in her possession.

Rowan

Rowan

I believe you, Iria. I also believe Pando changed this token. That makes him a witness, and I will need him to say so before others.

Iria

Iria

Then he may witness it openly. No refuge should depend on an account that cannot survive questions from the person it shelters.

Rowan nods and places the token beside Tessa’s notebook, not surrendering it. She now accepts Iria’s refuge as voluntary, while Pando’s public testimony becomes the price of that trust.

✓ Quest Accepted

Give a witnessed account of the token’s neutralization

Avaris, take Tessa and Lumen home. I’ll go with them as a witness.

Tessa

Tessa

I’ll keep the record safe, Dad. I’ll make sure Lumen and I reach home, and I’ll leave the pages ready for you when you return.

Avaris

Avaris

I will take them home and keep the route quiet. You can speak as Rowan’s witness without making her carry the account alone.

Tessa tucks the notebook against her chest. Lumen moves to her side, while Avaris turns toward the open path home and leaves Pando a clear place beside them.

Iria

Iria

Go, then. I will remain with Rowan, preserve the unbound token as evidence, and answer whatever questions arise when you return.

Pando falls into step with Tessa, Lumen, and Avaris along the open path. Behind them, Rowan keeps her evidence, and Iria’s refuge remains an offer rather than an authority.
