Behind the warded iron door, Nera presses her palm to the inner surface. The tether brightens, then bends toward Pando, turning the annex’s speaking channel into a clear voice beside him.

Nera

Nera

I redirected the channel, but only briefly. The listener below has been awake for days, hearing every movement through the treatment wards.

Selka stays near the eastern door, watching the three ward-lines while Pando hears a second pulse beneath the annex. It rises and falls like someone counting breaths in darkness.

Nera

Nera

The listener may know who still claims this place. They have heard the ward-keepers speak below, but they may not survive much longer without help.

Nera

Nera

Open my door first, and I can help you sever the lower tether from inside. Reach the treatment chamber first, and you may learn who commands the annex before they move me.

The active ward-line trembles beneath Pando’s hand. Nera waits behind the iron door, the lower listener waits below, and Selka keeps the passage clear while the rescue divides into two urgent choices.

Pando releases thin strands of blood onto the iron door. They spread across the three ward-lines, tracing their flow with precise, searching movements.

The strands identify the weak point at the third line’s tether-knot. Pando separates its direction from the lock, and the ward opens without sounding an alarm.

The iron door swings inward. Nera stands beyond it, a young adult woman in a faded gray infirmary shift, her oval face and short dark hair stark in the ward-light.

Nera

Nera

You found the break exactly. The tether is severed from the door, and whoever commands this annex cannot use it to track our movement now.

The freed tether reveals more than its weakness: a clean blood-sense runs from the opened doorway to the lower treatment chamber, mapping the safest path to the listener below.

Selka Venn

Then we have a way down, and they cannot call the annex around us. I will keep the passage clear while you and Nera reach the listener.

Pando draws the blood strands back from the iron door. They coil into his palm, then one extends through the warded passage, guiding him toward the lower treatment chamber.

He motions Nera and Selka to follow. Nera moves quietly at his side, while Selka keeps the passage behind them clear as the blood-sense leads downward.

The stair descends beneath the annex into a low chamber of pale stone, copper lamps, and treatment frames left empty. The last strand slips beneath a sealed inner door.

Pando follows the strand through the door’s dormant ward without breaking it. Beyond, a young adult man with a gaunt build, ash-brown hair, and a gray patient’s tunic sits upright beside the far wall.

Tavin Rusk

Tavin Rusk

You followed the tether. I am Tavin Rusk. The ward-keepers are gone from this chamber, but their command still listens through the treatment stone.

Nera enters behind Pando, and Selka takes position near the open door. The blood strand settles against the chamber floor, revealing the listening channel beneath Tavin’s chair, its occupant’s hollow-cheeked face marked by a small scar beneath one eye.

Tavin Rusk

Tavin Rusk

If you sever that channel, you will cut the annex off from whoever commands it. Do it carefully, and I can leave this room by my own choice.

Pando summons the authority marks beneath his skin. Angular lines of dark red light spread across his palm as he presses them into the treatment stone beneath Tavin’s chair.

The listening channel opens around his hand instead of resisting. Its buried pattern rises through the stone, revealing every thread that once carried commands into the chamber.

Tavin Rusk

Tavin Rusk

You have it. The channel is answering you now, not the ward-keepers.

Pando closes his fingers against the stone and redirects the channel’s listening inward. The treatment chamber falls silent, cut off from every distant authority that used it.

Nera

Nera

The tether has changed. I can no longer feel anyone reaching through it, and neither can Tavin.

The authority marks settle into the treatment stone as a controlled seal under Pando’s hand. The channel now obeys his decision, ready to remain closed or open only by consent.

Selka Venn

Then the annex has lost its claim over them. They can leave when they choose, and no command will follow them through this stone.

That was easier than expected. You two can have your reunion now.

Pando steps away from the sealed channel. Nera turns toward Selka, recognizing the woman who once trained beside her before the transfer separated them, while Tavin gives them quiet space.

Nera

Nera

Selka. I thought I would never see you again. They told me the transfer had taken you far away.

Selka Venn

Selka Venn

Nera. I searched every record I could reach, but the collectors buried your name. I should have searched harder.

Selka crosses the chamber and stops within reach. Nera closes the remaining distance, and they hold each other tightly, their reunion carrying nine years of fear, guilt, and recognition.

Nera

Nera

You found me. You came back when you could have stayed hidden.

Selka Venn

Selka Venn

I came back because you deserved to be found, Nera. This time, no one transfers either of us anywhere. We choose where we go.

“I stay silent and let them enjoy the moment”

Pando stays silent and lets Nera and Selka hold each other. Tavin remains beside the sealed channel, giving them the room to reclaim a bond the annex tried to erase.

Selka’s new coat brushes against Nera’s faded infirmary shift. Neither woman speaks for several breaths, and the quiet treatment chamber becomes a place where their reunion can belong to them.

Nera

Nera

I remembered your voice whenever the wards went quiet. I told myself it was only memory, but I hoped you were still looking for me.

Selka Venn

Selka Venn

I was looking, Nera. I found the records too late, but I will not waste another moment pretending that waiting is the same as protecting you.

Nera eases back without fully letting go, keeping one hand clasped around Selka’s sleeve. Her eyes move briefly to Pando, then return to Selka with recognition steadier than fear.

Tavin Rusk

Tavin Rusk

You should have this time. When you are ready, I can tell you what I heard through the treatment stone, and we can decide together what happens next.

“I turn to Tavin, " Let's give them some time, you can tell me what you heard."”

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Pando

Pando

Let’s give them some time. You can tell me what you heard.

Pando steps aside with Tavin, leaving Nera and Selka near the sealed channel. The two women keep their hands clasped and speak softly, their reunion given privacy without losing the open chamber.

Tavin Rusk

Tavin Rusk

I heard ward-keepers below discussing a transfer list. They were waiting for someone from the eastern stations to bring three marked people here.

Tavin points to the treatment stone beneath his chair. Its listening channel is sealed now, but faint impressions remain in the grooves where voices once traveled.

Tavin Rusk

Tavin Rusk

The ward-keepers called the destination the Hollow Stair. I never heard it named in the annex records, but they feared whoever waited there more than they feared the chain failing.

Behind them, Nera’s voice lowers to a murmur, and Selka answers with a quiet promise. Tavin keeps his attention on Pando, offering the information without claiming authority over what comes next.

Tavin Rusk

Tavin Rusk

There is one more thing. The list included a route mark I recognized from my own transfer. Someone at the Hollow Stair may still know why I was sent here.

The name settles into the quiet chamber as a concrete lead. Nera and Selka remain together nearby, while Tavin waits for Pando to decide whether the Hollow Stair becomes their next destination.

“I try to overhear what Nera and Selka are saying while paying attention to tavin”

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -3)

Pando keeps his attention on Tavin while angling his hearing toward Nera and Selka. Their low voices carry through the treatment chamber, though separating both conversations demands more focus than expected.

Nera

Nera

I thought the Hollow Stair was only a name used to frighten the marked. Selka says she heard it spoken with real fear, which means someone there still holds authority.

Selka Venn

Selka Venn

It was never one of our ordinary stations. The collectors were told not to ask questions about it, and transfers marked for that route disappeared from our working lists.

Tavin Rusk

Tavin Rusk

The mark on my transfer list was not a destination mark. It was a warning placed beside my name, as if whoever sent me expected the Hollow Stair to recognize me.

Pando catches the full meaning, but the effort costs him the next breath of Tavin’s quieter explanation. He must ask for that missing detail rather than trust the fragment.

Tavin Rusk

Tavin Rusk

I said the warning used my old route sign. If the Hollow Stair still receives names, it may know why I was transferred, but it may also know how to call marked people back.

Pando reaches beneath Tavin’s arm and braces him firmly. With Nera supporting his other side, he guides Tavin up the treatment stair and through the annex corridor.

Selka moves ahead, checking each passage before they cross it. The sealed treatment channel remains silent, and no ward-line answers as the group reaches the eastern door.

Tavin Rusk

Tavin Rusk

My legs are unsteady, but I can walk. I will not be carried unless I truly need it.

Pando keeps his support steady without lifting Tavin from the ground. Nera stays close on Tavin’s other side, matching his pace until the warded iron door opens onto wet eastern air.

Nera

Nera

The annex is behind us. I can breathe more easily already, and I choose to keep walking with you.

They emerge beyond the annex threshold together. Selka holds the door open, then lets it swing shut behind them, leaving Nera and Tavin outside the institution that held them.

Selka Venn

Selka Venn

You are both out. No one here can claim your steps now. We can decide where to rest, and what the Hollow Stair means, together.
