Adventure of Talimaryl 1

The ledger lies open in the mud, and the page is worse than blood. Names. Armor tones. Resonance marks. The black iron coffer was never a battery at all, it is a listening stone, carrying the soldiers' lives back to the baron.

Talimaryl stands over the attendants as the hidden passage breathes cold air around them. The First Attendant goes pale, the Second Attendant tries to snatch the ledger, and the Deserter Soldier stares as if the ground itself has betrayed him.

The Messenger recoils from the page, then leans in again, eyes fixed on the ink-stained line that marks him as watched. Nearby, the coffer's dead shell sits split open, its iron ribs still damp with the last of the warding.

The Deserter Soldier draws a hard breath, fury replacing fear as the truth settles. Talimaryl has not just broken a curse, he has cut open the baron's eye.

Talimaryl sweeps the ledger up from the mud and folds it into his pack in one smooth motion. Wet pages slap once against leather, then vanish from sight.

The Second Attendant lunges too late, fingers closing on empty air where the book was. Mud smears their sleeve as they freeze, staring at the now-bare patch of ground.

A distant shout rolls down the hidden passage, sharper than before. Somewhere beyond the tarp, boots strike stone in a growing rush.

The First Attendant flinches toward the sound, terror overtaking caution. The Second Attendant turns with them, torn between the dark ahead and the yelling behind.
