The Source of the Debtthe baron's camp

The passage opens into a cramped stone chamber, its shelves crammed with scrolls and fist-sized crystals that cast a cold, green shimmer. Talimaryl steps in behind the deserter soldier as the bronze pulse in his armor thickens, like a heartbeat under metal.

The Deserter Soldier

The Deserter Soldier

It is here. The debt is close enough to hurt.

He staggers, one gauntleted hand braced on the wall, and the bronze light crawls along his breastplate in a tight, rhythmic flare. The nearest crystal responds with a faint answering glow, as if the room itself is listening.

That glow, it is tied to him somehow.

A black iron coffer sits beneath the shelves, ringed in chalk and bronze filings. The air around it hums with the same parasite-cold magic that clings to the soldier's armor. This is the source, or a conduit to it.

Talimaryl now has the shape of the problem, a living debt mark feeding from the baron's hidden working, waiting to be cut or claimed.

Identify the source of the soldier's parasitic armor

Open my mind and scan the iron coffee telepathically to investigate the source of the parasitic armor

SUCCESS (Great Telepathy, rolled +1)

Talimaryl closes his eyes and opens his mind toward the coffer. The chamber’s green glow thins into threads of intent, and he catches a second presence nested in the iron, old warding twisted into a feeding knot.

The box is not empty. Something bound inside it is driving the mark.

Bronze pain flashes through the deserter soldier’s armor, but the pulse does not come from the coffer alone. It branches downward, into the chalk ring and beneath the stones, as if the chest is only a lid on a deeper hook.

The Deserter Soldier

The Deserter Soldier

That is the baron’s debt chest. I was made to carry its bite.

The coffer answers with a low, hungry thrum. In Talimaryl’s touch, the spell shows its shape at last, a parasitic enchantment anchored here and routed through the soldier’s armor.

Then break it. Before it takes him down.

The deserter sways, but stays standing, one hand white on the wall. The chamber waits on Talimaryl’s next move, while the coffer keeps humming from the dark.
