The sluice gate holds at last. Water drains to a muddy trickle, and the iron coffer sits half-buried, sputtering black sparks where the anchors still bite the floor.

Talimaryl strikes at the lingering wards. The first anchor shatters with a dry crack, and the coffer jolts as if something inside it has been denied breath.

From the far wall, the old culvert answers with a groan. The ash tarp there slips aside, not from ruin, but from a hidden latch, and a lantern glow spills through fresh-cut stone.

That was no breach. It was a route.

Boots and low voices flicker beyond the opening, not guards rushing to seal the camp, but baronial attendants moving with practiced haste. They know this passage. They have always known it.

By the ash, they planned this tunnel. We were the latch, not the trap.

Talimaryl breaks the last anchor. The coffer goes dead, its glow collapsing into cold iron as the hidden passage stands exposed for all the camp to see.

Talimaryl steps through the hidden passage as the cut stone swallows the chamber behind him. Wet footsteps, lamp breath, and low voices draw close, and the drained culvert opens into a narrow service bend lined with fresh mortar.

At the bend’s mouth, two baronial attendants freeze with a ledger and a lantern between them. One turns too late, and Talimaryl’s blade is already there, pinning the parchment to the wall without striking flesh.

They were not meant to find us.

The mortar is still damp.

The Messenger slips in behind Talimaryl, staring at the lantern and the ledger. The Deserter Soldier follows a step later, breath harsh, then goes very still at the sight of the attendants.

You knew. You all knew.

The attendants blanch, and one drops the ledger. It slaps into the mud, pages splaying open on the baron’s seal and a tally of names.
