Morning light flattens the ruined yard. The violet siphon is gone, but the deserter soldier still looks hollowed out, one hand braced on his chest plate. He points past the moor toward the dark forest.

I know the track to the baron’s camp. If we reach his hall, the debt can be cut clean, by right and witness.

And if it is a lie, we walk straight into a noose.

The soldier swallows hard. He does not raise his blade. He wants the debt ended, not renewed, and his exhaustion shows in every stiff breath.

The forest route goes directly to the source of the curse.

Beyond the broken wall, the moor gives way to black pines and a faint road cut through the heather. It is the first real lead toward the baron who owns the magic, and the soldier's chain has become a path instead of a prison.

The messenger keeps close to the tower stones, watching Talimaryl and the soldier alike, while the soldier waits for the choice that will decide whether he leads the way or falls back into bondage.

Pines close around the camp, their needles black against a low slate sky. Smoke slips from a sunken cookfire, and a ditch lined with sharpened stakes hems the clearing. Talimaryl reaches the edge of it without challenge, the soldier’s route proven true by the trampled mud and watch-post signs.

The road bends behind the east ditch. The camp is ringed, but not sealed.

See the ash tarp over the third palisade gap. That hides a culvert. Men use it to haul water, and to slip out if the gate is watched.

He knew the post shifts too. That is not guesswork.

The soldier lowers his chin, not proud, but steady. He points once, then stops, as if giving the last of his hiding places away costs him visibly.

I led you here by the clean path. If I meant betrayal, I would have chosen the ditch road and let the stakes speak for me.

A horn sounds inside the camp, brief and wary. From the palisade, an armed watcher turns toward the forest edge, just as the soldier’s finger marks the culvert tarp.
